Finally settled on a Crusader State to go with the Microworld 6mm Fantasy Crusader State Kickstarter. Thought I’d kick it off with some Halberdiers – I’m happy with the outcome (medieval figures are new to me) but most pleased with the effect in mass on a 25mm square base. They’ll play well with the Lion Rampant/Dragon Rampant rules, among others. (Forgive the photos on their sides, I’m on a mobile and I have no idea why the forum does that and won’t let me change it.)

Like he said.  Looking quite good sir!  But 6mm, a little big for you!

Yeah it was like painting the side of a battleship!

Love the scale, though, and the little figures are beautifully cast, hand-sculpted. They’re a very fun project. I have some Knights Hospitaller ready to paint up once the first unit of Halberdiers is done. And of course, the Undead. In my universe, the Crusades have been interrupted by the sudden rise of the Fallen Empire, an undead scourge from Byzantium. The Christian states, the remaining loyalist Byzantines and the Muslim sultans all have to band together to fight them back.

Even then, the Fallen Empire only goes dormant – they reappear in the Renaissance and attempt to conquer Europe a second time.

I’m coming back around to this project, as one does, now that I’ve seasoned on the idea a bit. I love the fantasy elements of the Microworld Crusader state line, and happened to be reading last weekend about Prester John and the myth of a medieval Christian empire in Central Asia. I haven’t formed the idea completely yet but green and white make very nice colors for these guys – with a bit of time off coming up I hope to do some painting!

Great work. Will you be using only Microworld or also Baccus or some other manufacturer?

For the time being, Microworld only, since that’s what I have in hand, and my gaming budget is tapped out until sometime next year!

I’ve got to admit that most of their human 6mm fantasy figures end up looking like halflings to me due to their proportions.  It’s not a bad thing at all, as a halfling crusader army is a brilliant idea IMO!

Hah! I get that. But to me the proportions just look like guys laden with heavy mail and cloaks. Each his own taste I suppose – en masse their effect is awesome!

Kind of you to say so! I did another base this afternoon in the supposed colors of the Kingdom of Prester John, and I have to say I like the result. The man front right is slightly out of line – the kind of thing that bugs the hell out of me, but I’ll live with it. He’s a willing Crusader, I can’t fault his spirit. But his sergeant will have to have a word with him after the battle.
