A little research can be a dangerous thing….
I’ve read that small companies of halbardiers were raised by decree in 1647 as part of the army of the Covenant in Scotland.

Did they ever see battle as a coherent force? It does seem unlikely….

I could imagine them being assigned to guard the artillery/baggage, or act as an infantry bodyguard to a general, but not being used in the Landsknecht way (ie as flanking parties that nip out and do horrible things to each other in melee) as I suspect that those tactics would be so far in the past as to be lost to human recollection.  I wonder if it was to use them in garrisons, thereby releasing more pike or shot armed troops for fighting?

If I recall rightly they were for use against Highlanders and were also given armour where possible so as to break the impact of the Highland charge.  No idea if they saw action or not.

Thanks to Tumbling Dice figures coming with a range of weapons, I have enough ex-Pikeman (advancing) to arm with halberds & create a 4 base BG.

In FoG, this is a small unit.

I’d better run this past my pal who is busy creating Montrose’s Highlanders & see what he thinks.

    Thanks for the information.

You’re welcome. I’ve remembered where I saw it Stuart Reid’s Scots Armies of the Civil War if your mate wants to look it up – not sure if its volume 1 or 2 though.
