The latest issue of WSS (number 75) has a very interesting article about this campaign but unless I’ve missed it, there were no suggested figures in the article – the accompanying photos look – to my inexpert eye – like traditional ‘medievals’ for the Danes and ‘viking/dark-age’-types for the Gutes. Can anyone with more knowledge suggest the most appropriate figure ranges for this conflict?
Check out the authors Blog for plenty of info for the figures he uses for his forces. Hope this helps?
Thanks very much for the link – it is a really good blog (and with good links to his mate’s with the Gutes). It does seem – unless I’ve missed/misread something – that he did use later medieval figures for the Danes and dark age/Viking types for the Gutes.
Thanks again
I think you’re right. From reading the Osprey series on the Scnadanavian armies of the period, they were somewhat behind Western Europe in terms of armour development. The Danes and Germans were more ‘Westernised’ than their opponents IIRC.
