Operation Night Crow 2: All or Nothing

Better late than never, I wrote up the game I played with Tony Francis of Brigade (we actually sat down to roll dice in November…). I wanted to delay slightly as, while I was at it, I also detailed some of the problems with the scenario for Miniature Wargames issue 429 which is at the shops now but here’s some more detail on the Slammers site for those who’d like to dig a bit deeper.

    Enjoy!

    Hello John!

I’m not much for science fiction gaming, but I must say that that is truly a stunning setup you’ve got there, very pretty!

Thanks Jack. One of the attractive (to me at least) things about Slammers is that’s it’s very “Vietnam in Space”. So there’s an awful lot of “these are Hueys attacking a North Vietnam airbase” feel to it.

I know that doesn’t appeal to everyone but it does feel very ‘grounded’ in Dave Drake’s (the original author) experience in ‘Nam and that helps it sit well with me.

I’m also lucky enough to have built up a collection of nice models and scenry over the years and play with folks (like Tony) ho have more of the same!

Of course, what would have been really good is if I had put the right web address in the original post… fixed now and here. Long day…

    John,

Certainly, and again, I wasn’t denigrating sci-fi gaming by any means, just not my thing, probably more from the “I already have too much stuff to do” line of thinking vice the “I would never do that because it’s not interesting” side, and I’m not familiar at all with the ‘Slammers’…  genre?  But please, break out ‘Ride of the Valkyrie’ and I’ll keep looking 😉

Great looking game.  You know I love a good helo-assault!  That was pretty tough on the attackers though, even with the “little” opposition they faced…

Jack – no problem! Indeed I do love the smell of ionisation* in the morning!

DSG – Thanks mate: the ‘stealth ship’ is a real interesting beast: it can form the core of an attack force with its special abilities** and – for the scenario – I should have had two (but have still only painted one, so… serves me right!). However – in the end – one is attacking some of the best heavy tanks in the business (blowers) complete with their own air defence stuff and… well they are just low flying VTOLS with all of the lack of serious armour that this implies.

As we all know, in the slammersverse, if it flies it dies. So forces only use vehicles that – in the combat zone at least – ride total nap of the earth, just to put in some cover. Trouble is… when push comes to shove they are still only armoured attack helicopters (in all but name). And – when you shoot at something like that with a main tank gun or mass AA fire (all of which are guided by super-dooper AI systems and so rarely miss) they do get chopped up a bit

Yup, that’s the “problem” with LOS beam weapons: anything that comes over the horizon it’s dead meat.  (Real good reason why big stompy mechs are not feasible in a beam weapon society!)

This attack seemed a bit like taking on a Tiger with a sharp stick, and a short one at that!  But, at the same time, I totally get why this sort of surprise fast assault might be the only option when going after such a force defending the shuttles.  Anything else would have been detected and intercepted further out…

Anyhoo, are (or have) you going to paint that 2nd stealthy up?

If anyone is interested, I’ve written up my painting method for the tracked Lightning Division tanks – as you’ll see, I made it up on the fly due to a shortage of blue-tak…

It’s a great piece of improv (!) – I linked it in the piece on the Slammers site and it’s one I may pinch in the future

I saw this and immediately recognized what was used for the base:
