I am looking for some recommendations for board games that might be suitable as campaign engines for miniatures campaigns, to cover the following periods:
The conflicts between the Anglo-Saxon and British Nations from C7 onwards
The Saxon -Viking conflict
The Norman invasion

Diex Aie might fit your interests, it contains both a man to man skirmish hex and counter wargame and a matching strategy game set directly following the Norman Invasion. You might drop the skirmish and replace it with a rule set of your choice.
1066 Year of the Comet, a more grand strategic treatment.
Info on both can be seen on BGG of course!26/09/2020 at 10:54 #144682RuarighParticipant
Britannia covers most of that period. I have been meaning to adapt it as a campaign engine for years, but lacked the players to make the effort worthwhile.26/09/2020 at 22:02 #144700ian pillayParticipant
Risk the battle for medieval England – English Heritage special addition is a good medieval board game.

Check out the Society of Ancients games. From memory there are a couple there that might suit. You don’t have to be a member to purchase and they are reasonably priced.

For the Anglo-Saxon v Vikings, the three volumes of High Flying Dice Games on Alfred The Great, published between 2014 and 2017, may be worth a look. For 1066 I have Norm Smith’s Invasion 1066: The Battle of Hastings (2014) and 1066: Hastings, Stamford Bridge, Fulford (2017) by Taktyka i Strategia. My copy was cheap (around 20 euros, I think), p&p from Poland was very reasonable and English rules were available.15/12/2020 at 13:54 #148316WhirlwindParticipant
Many thanks for the interesting suggestions, all. At the moment I am looking at Britannia to see if that can be modified for my purposes, but we shall see how it goes.
