I have just returned from a week’s excavations in Mametz Wood on the Somme, although not strictly wargaming, it may be of some interest to some in here:

I think it’s great and useful to WW1 gamers.

    This is very cool!

Still a lot of unexploded shells in those woods, huh?

Did that make excavating a bit more exciting than usual?

We get slapped around, but we have a good time!

Thanks Thaddeus, yep the woods are full of unexploded ordnance. However, strangely enough the trenches were surprisingly clear of evidence for it. I have been involved in excavating trenches at Thiepval for the last ten years and the amount of munitions we find is staggering, here; barely a shell splinter!

Really interesting. Been there (but not done that!) about 20 years ago – those photos of the woodland floor are exactly how I remember the woods around Albert I peeked in past the fencing and warning signs. Eerie places, barbed wire and helmets visible in the earth and undergrowth, and for me even more poignant than the cemeteries. I was kinda scared wandering about outside the woods.

When does the program go out, do you know yet? Edit: Ah – just noticed that bit!

Thanks Jim, until this last week we were only able to peek over the fence as well! I see you have already answered your own question!
