Do you want to see some Sunday afternoon Mad Max post-apocalypse car chases, courtesy of 2HW’s ‘Machinas’? Of course you do.

    Looks like fun.

I bought some cheap cars to do something like this a while ago, then moved on to other things.  I might need to dig them out and work on them.

Mad Max cars are always fun.

How do you like the Machinas rules? Are they meant for solo play to?

All 2HW games seem to be designed for solo play, and Machinas is no exception. I’ve run races with six cars, just playing one myself and using an ‘AI’ to run the other five, and it all worked out fine. In road chases you tend to play the chased vehicle, holding off a randomish gang of AI controlled pursuers, and this works quite well.

The game itself is, in principle, a good one, and covers chases and races better than any other mechanism I’ve seen. It assumes that all vehicles stay in a pack, and it’s that which moves around the track or along the road. Maneuver is about changing your relative position within the pack. So the play area can be quite small; basically the length of the vehicles you have in play. The games shown in my post, for example, were run on a 16″ length of road. Unfortunately the game also gives the impression it was rushed out and that bits of it weren’t really playtested that well. Over the two years I’ve been playing it I’ve house-ruled or changed about half of the game, I reckon. However I’m fully aware that what I like in a game and what the designers and players of games in the THW stable want in a game aren’t always the same things 🙂

I’d say it is a good game that’s crying out for a streamlined and better designed second edition.

Here’s a link to all of my Machinas blog posts, which will give you an idea of the games I’ve played and how I’ve fiddled with the rules: http://hordesofthethings.blogspot.com.au/search/label/machinas

After those games I revamped my V8 Interceptor, and gave it an outing in another pre-MOAB test-game.
