    Jozi,

Thanks for posting that, great stuff.  It’s been really cool watching your 3mm project grow, and I greatly appreciate all the heavy lifting you’ve been doing with playtesting, and all the insight it’s provided.  I’m very excited about Ivan’s next set, even though I haven’t been able to play yet, though  I should (finally) be able to join you this weekend.

And I’m with you on treating the T-72s and M1s as equal; sometimes I feel like playing it ‘for real,’ i.e., the distinct difference between the types of vehicles, but more often than not I like a nice, simple ‘tank is a tank’ fight.  It lets me get different models on the table but still have a fight that either side can win, without going to extreme off-set unbalancing of the forces.  Though I have gotten a hankering for ‘real’ NATO vs WarPac after reading your fights 😉

That reminds me, I need to go download the latest version, don’t I?

Oh, and Ivan, I love the look of the new cover!

    V/R,
    Jack

Just downloaded and read it, though I should have been sleeping.  I have lots of questions.  Clearly you guys left me in the dust while I was fighting in Poland 😉

I’ll have to hit you up later, it’s way past time to hit the rack…

@kyoteblue: I wish I could do 15mm, but space, time,  and expense are limiting factors.  Your stuff always looks amazing!  When you get the rules out on the table, send us pictures.

@JustJack: Thank you!  My thinking on the T-72 versus M-1 match up is at typical engagement ranges in Germany (what 800 – 1200 meters?) a company of T-72’s could render a company of M-1’s combat ineffective.  I don’t use Desert Storm as a yardstick for this, as the Iraqi’s had inferior locally produced ammunition and export model T-72’s.  Plus M1A1 (and M1IP’s) are up armored from the first generation of Abrams.

I prefer to give NATO an advantage with more activation’s, so that while they have fewer shooters, they will fire more often.  Also, maybe give them shoot and scoot.

Just to make things interesting, I am painting up a batch of T-55’s, which I will count as lower tech versus the M-1’s all around.  Will let you guys know how that goes.  My FRG Territorials will have M-48’s with 105mm guns, so they will be lower tech when shot at by our T-72’s but equal tech when firing.

What I really like about the way Ivan writes rules is the ratings are relative.

Kyote – Scales are just a state of mind 🙂

When we close our eyes, 3mm, 15mm and 28mm are all united in one, eternal proto-miniature.

I was secretly hoping Jozi had gotten some more playtesting in and I could see some more Brigade Command on the table.  I will say I’m about to join the ranks of the playtesters as I now have two forces which are finished enough to play.  I’m about to put a post up for them.

    Kyoteblue:

Hold your ground Kyoteblue and don’t let the bast&rds grind you down. Use the money you save to single-handedly start a 15mm renaissance in gaming. Stand true and strong, sir! I salute you!

    Minions of scale-chaos:

Lay off the Blue! Enough of the prejudice and scalism. Haven’t we evolved past that in 2015? Can’t we all just get along? “Let the circle be unbroken, by and by Lord by and by….”

Stay mellow Blue and don’t mind the haters’ negative vibes. Your 15’s are prefect and valid and totally cool. You are the “Dude”!

Cheers and good gaming in 15’s.

I feel your pain Kyote, I really do.  If I could do it all over again, I would ditch my 28mm SciFi and Colonials and do them both in 15mm, but I am too invested in terrain, painting, and lead to make the switch.

Of course that did not stop me from starting a 6mm Colonials project…  Madness I tell you!

Think the rules sections are mostly done, not taking any last tweaks and changes into account.

Feels like the page count will end up around 70 or so but we’ll see how it ends up.

Solo, scenarios and campaigns up next.

Is this where we bitch about typos? 😛

The number of activations per force confuses me.

When your side takes a standard turn, you may select units to activate and carry out activities.
In a standard game, you may activate 1 unit for every 3 in your force currently, though you may
always activate a minimum of 2 units.
Hence, forces ranging from 1-5 companies will have 2 activations, 6-8 companies will have 3
    activations and so forth.

Shouldn’t it be 1-6 companies getting 2 activations?

One always slips through 🙂 Here is as good as any.

THe text is correct, the example is wrong. 6 units should indeed provide 2 activations.
To make matters worse, it should be a minimum of 3 activations (to keep it in line with 2nd edition FiveCore).

    I’ll update the PDF tonight.

Just got my copy, will be eagerly digesting it in between working this morning.  WHOOOOHOOOO!!!  Was reading a bridge demolition scenario in WS&S and the wife wants to play Brigade Commander again, so will be back on the table soon.

Will let you know if I spot any typos, but GREAT work Ivan!

In the new TOE doc it lists WARPAC tank regiments as having 3x tank battalions and 3x motor rifle battalions. That should be 1x motor rifles.

Hello Ivan, I bought your game this morning and need to ask a quick question: Does the Displacement rule apply when the spotted unit is occupying fortifications?

Also, sorry mate I guess it’s two questions: I have a couple of Lebed and an Aist hovercraft (in 6mm), how might I get them on the table in a game context as opposed to just using them as scenery?

    Thanks – Alvin

Ack!  My apologies on the TR with 3 Motor Rifle Battalions.

What do you guys think about the suggested tank ratings?  All completely open to interpretation I know.

Just got my latest envelope of goodies from Picoarmor, so a Panzer Brigade (Leopard 2) is in the hopper as well as Close Air Support.

    Alvin – Thanks for buying!
Units in fortifications shouldn’t displace, I’ll add a note about that.

Jozi – I liked them. People can always change them to fit their own ideas but it’s a great place to start out. I don’t think I changed any.

They look pretty good Jozi. I do disagree with rating the T-64/72/80 as equal tech against the M-60. I think the armor difference between the M-60 and the M-48 isn’t enough to put it in the same class as the M1/Leo2/Challenger. Also the Leo 1 is notoriously thin skinned and even with later upgrades I think Soviet 125mm guns would punch clean through it.

Thanks, Quaker!  Not trying to make a sad Ivan, but…

That all sounds very reasonable.  As an aside, while I was in high school I of course read Red Storm Rising, Team Yankee, and Red Army (like all of us of a certain age…), so I recently bought the scenario book The Bear Marches West on my kindle. (worth the purchase, by the way)

One thing I notice now with the benefit of hindsight and experience in the army is that Tom Clancy seemed to have a MUCH rosier view of NATO technological superiority than the other authors (which makes sense as the other two guys were serving officers.) For example, and I had forgotten this, he has a company of M1A1’a from 11ACR backed up by a company of FRG Territorials and a flight of A-10’s successfully defend against not one but TWO Soviet Category A Tank Regiments with the newest T-80’s and BMP-2’s.  Sure they would be attrited, but I suspect they would roll right passed what they would report as a blocking position.

I hope to start a campaign soon, circa 1984.  Will pit an armor heavy brigade (2 x M-1 Battalions, 1 x M-113 Battalion) against a Soviet Motor Rifle Division, with the regiments attacking in turn in echelon.  So 4 games, game 1 will be against a MRR (BMP) with the Tank Regiment coming in last or next to last.  Will include all the Division bells and whistles I can, even if they are not on the table at once, like the Division forward detachment, reserve Tank Battalion, AT Battalion, etc.

I’m generally in favour of smoothing over the edges at the extreme ends a little. THe very best gets brought down a little bit and the worst gets brought up a little bit. It just tends to make for better games.

Yes, I definitely don’t have as rosy view as Clancy et al. My US force is a demi-brigade of M1A1s and M2 Bradleys versing a Soviet Tank Regiment. But even though the Soviets have twice the battalion count the US four company battalions and four vehicle platoons (I’m going to use the heavy tank attachment rules for the M1A1s) get the odds fairly close.

A trick I saw somewhere, long ago, for players who prefer a fairly wide disparity in performance between NATO and WARPAC is to simply make the same NATO force fight two consecutive WARPAC formations, with no reinforcements inbetween.
