Let us say that for the sake of argument someone wanted to get some WFB armies that had that Old School vibe about them, I suspect from looking around and careful mixing and matching that the bulk of the regular army could be made from proxies and models other than GW.

However I suspect the tricky bit is when it comes to war machines, they have a pretty distinct feel.

Does anyone make models that are very clearly meant to be proxies for the OSR war machines?

How “Old School” fantasy did you want to get?  Or did you mean early WH/GW fantasy figures?

For example, my earliest (and strongest, most cherished) recollections of Tolkien images are the illustrations done by Angus McBride, and the unique figures produced by Mithril miniatures.

I was (& am) a fan of the old Minifigs Valley of the Four Winds range, now available via Caliver. http://www.miniaturefigurines.co.uk/Catalogue.aspx?ScaleID=3&CategoryID=35&SubCategoryID=268

They may need more Skullz (TM) for GW but they had a Hieronymous Bosch/Bruegel vibe to them.

Not so great for 28mm, also no war machines?
    Also not that WFB vibe?

    😀

    Thanks though.

I can’t get that minifigs link to open.

Or the images on the TMP link.

But I since found these which are ideal:

My fantasy forces are very much Old School and started out before WFB though I do have the original 3 book set somewhere.  My armies are from various historical ranges and fantasy figures from Minifigs (Mythic  Earth, Valley of 4 winds, Aurelea Rococco etc), Garrison (Sword and Sorcery), Greenwood and Ball, Hinchliffe, Asgard, Ral Partha, RAFM, Citadel (old), Reaper (old), Minot, GW LOTR and several others that escape me and others now defunct.

Very few of the newer large figures fit.

    Ooops.  Old links.  Sorry.

Anyway, this is how Angus McBride saw Orcs:
