If you need a little inspiration, check out these 10 videos.  I’m really inspired by his ability to continue wargaming and video taping while on the road at times, all of that in the middle of COVID!

    Also, check out these links:

The videos have got me extremely interested in the Void Pirates rules.  I ordered them and even a few of the figures he uses in his episodes.  I can’t wait to try them out.

QUESTIONS:  Have any of you had any experience with the Void Pirates rules?  If so, what was your impression of those rules?  Have you ever “merged” them with another campaign rules set, like on the videos above?  Thanks.

I’ve played a couple of games of Void Pirates. It was fun and easy to learn. The basic mechanisms are like all the other Goalsystem games, rolling usually 4-6 dice and counting the number of successes. It’s not my favourite mechanism, but it works. Character creation is based off archetypes, so it is quick and easy to create characters. I played in 15mm on a 2’x2′ board using the standard distances. It all worked well and my opponent found the rules easy to learn too. The only downside is that I lost both games, so the rules have been consigned to the shelf of games that shall never be played again! 🙂

I think there is a solo download for these rules, so I plan to dig them out again and try a solo campaign, when next I am in the same country as my wargames stuff.

    Excellent information.  Thanks.

How many figures did you play with per side?

We each had four figures in the first scenario. I had fewer than that in the second because two of mine were still wounded from the first. The second game devolved to my sniper trying to take out my opponent’s force before they could reach her. She failed, but it was still an interesting attack/defence game. I’m not sure how an extended campaign would work though. I could imagine one player getting early victories and racing ahead. I am not sure to what extent the underdog bonus in the rules will balance out uneven games. I guess that is something I need to work on finding out.

As I wrote before, we enjoyed the game and it did not strain our aging brains. With the low figure count and the $7.95 price tag for the pdf, it is cheap enough to get into that it might be worth trying even if you have doubts. I also really liked the ideas for using 5PFH game with it that were in the videos you linked to. I have plans for using the new edition of 5PFH as the basis for a solo Traveller campaign set somewhere in the Spinward Marches. I could easily see using Void Pirates as the rules of choice for at least some of the scenarios.

Fantastic suggestions.  Now I can’t wait to give it a try.  Thanks so much!

Not too overly concerned about balance, I’m hoping that the rules will allow for asymmetric scenarios like a team of 4-6 spaceship crew members who encounters a band of 8-12 primitive warriors on an alien jungle planet.

No reason why that should not work. You could classify the primitive warriors as troopers, perhaps led by a better class warrior, and generate your crew using the normal rules that give 4-6 figures on a team.

I don’t think that Void Pirates includes henchmen groups, but you could probably borrow the henchmen rules from one of the other goalsystems games, if you want to build up the number of figures on the table. The ones in Super Mission Force ought to port over fairly easily with minimal adjusting of the rules. Henchmen are basically units of ten figures that have to stay close together. As a unit, they function like a single character figure. Every hit removes one figure from the group, and they are not as powerful as character figures overall, but can still swarm you if you are not careful. By using them, you could have your crew be attacked by a whole horde of hostile alien warriors. You scythe them down with your phase plasma pistols in the 40 watt range, but more keep coming at you …

ETA: It just struck me that you don’t need to borrow rules wholesale. You could just take the idea of henchmen and apply it to the standard archetypes. If you create a character archetype and then represent your primitive warriors by fielding that character as a number of models equal to the archetype’s Vitality (hit points), you can achieve much the same effect. Most of your ‘characters’ would become units of three figures, because that is the standard Vitality in the game. You would add more figures to the unit if you buy traits that enhance Vitality, and you would remove a figure each time the ‘character’ loses one Vitality. A standard 50 point Void Pirates force where you have one Hero leader could have 5-6 Trooper characters represented by 3 figures each, allowing your crew to fight off an alien horde totalling about 16-20 figures.

Thanks.  I just got my copy of the rules.  I’ll be giving them a read to see how those modifications can be worked into the games.

I didn’t realise Four-Color Studios had an outlet on Wargame Vault. I’ve always picked up their stuff from Wargame Downloads before. That’s good news. Wargame Vault is a better platform for digital content.
