I sneaked it out last night, just seeing how it goes for 24 hours before announcing it…

ParticipantI do not welcome the “ignore” feature, it is the internet equivalent of “not talking to each other” and a manifestation of petty playground politics. Shall we be looking forward to the creation of a “Dog House” next? AB, the more you make this place like TMP the less attractive it becomes, I ask you to please reconsider this decision.

Are you new to the internets?
Every message board and it’s dog have an ignore function of some sort. At the risk of sounding like a certain Old Fart, how does an ignore function impact YOUR involvement with TWW?

KeymasterNo Dog House.
As NCS notes, pretty much every forum has some sort of ignore feature.
The introduction of it here is to give people more choice and more features to choose from.
TMP, TWW, WD3, FU!-UK, and so on all have an ignore feature, but the forums are very much different from one another. On TMP I used the stifle a fair bit.
Not because I couldn’t stop myself from replying to certain people I had a different view from, but because I was tired of seeing people either breaking TMP’s forums rules and nothing being done about it or because people were just plain nasty, like the sexist, homophobic, genocide encouraging topics that happen there etc.
It was clear that the moderators there did not mind such attitudes and posts but I did.
So rather than try and tell those people they are not nice I stifled them. But that is just ignoring the problem rather than addressing it.
A bit like burying my head in the sand, the topics and comments were still there it was just that I never saw them any longer. Here on TWW those sorts of posts will not be tolerated.
So from my own point of view I have no need to ignore anyone as there will be nothing offensive posted.
There will be stuff I disagree with and stuff that bores me to tears, for those posts I will just ignore them the old fashioned way.
For those that can’t ignore them the old fashioned way we have the Ignore User feature. It is not meant as a way to drown out the trolls and bigots and those encouraging or condoning illegal activities, but simply another tool in TWW’s toolkit.
Having the same, or indeed as is the case, more features than another site does not mean it will become like the other site.
It is the users and the moderators that set the tone and expectations of a site.TWW now has more features and functionality than any other site (I think, that is a guess though)
I also hope it has the best future.
I really want this to be a community where people can get along nicely and share what is after all the thing we all like, gaming.
If by having the Ignore User feature it means more people are inclined to stay then that is good.
I personally won’t use it (and I would not even if I was not a mod) and no-one should feel obliged to either.I am waffling now so will end with this.
In a rubbish analogy, just because two people have paints and a paint brush does not mean they will paint to the same level, it is the painter that defines the work, not the tools.

KeymasterI have mentioned in a few posts that if TWW starts degenerating please let me know.
I want to make this a top top place to be and that means I must be impartial and fair whilst also looking after the needs of my paying and non paying members, it is a hard balancing act and you will never please everyone, but hopefully so far so good…06/01/2015 at 14:15 #15140Mike

ParticipantHaven’t found the need to use an ignore/stifle function anywhere else, but I have no problem with it being available for those who want it.
Alvin, I think the negative connotations with the ignore and stifle features on TMP are because of the way some people argued about them all the time!
Now, if we can be a bit more chilled here……

ParticipantThanks for the function as it will make my TWW experience better.

ParticipantMike, is there a way to tell if someone has you on their ‘ignore’ list? I ask because it would seem to be a waste of time writing replies to them if they do, yet if there’s no way to tell how do you know?
@Cerdic. Your probably right, Cerdic, but putting someone on stifle/ignore is a form of insult which is perhaps why it got people wound up, especially when you could easily just scroll past their comments without reading them. However, it is clearly a popular addition to the site so I am more than happy to go with the flow.07/01/2015 at 10:19 #15205Mike

Not that I am aware of.
I will double check though.
However don’t let that stop you replying to people, even if they can’t see your post, others can and they may like it.07/01/2015 at 10:27 #15206Mike
KeymasterRight.
I just ignored AB and checked from inside the AB account and could find no indication EM had ignored AB.
Which to be fair is a probably a good thing.
If being ignored bothers people then knowing you have been ignored and who ignored you may lead to ill feelings.
I think here, that in this case ignorance is bliss, for both parties. -
