Hello everyone ,
At the Battle of Aliwal fought on 28th January 1846 during the First Sikh War, HM 53rd Foot is a light infantry regiment or not?
Some writers point this out and others do not ?
Thank you for helping me.07/05/2018 at 12:06 #90048John D SaltParticipant
A minute of googling finds the site of the regimental museum, who might reasonably be expected to know:
this indicates that they did not become light infantry until the 1881 amalgamation.
All the best,

Yes John, I know this site but as there is some that indicates that this regiment was light infantry in 1845, I do not know who to believe, ok?07/05/2018 at 15:40 #90055John D SaltParticipant
I would have thought the regimental museum ought to be fairly authoritative.
What sources do you have that suggest the 53rd was light infantry at Aliwal?
It seems quite clear that it never bore the title (Light Infantry) prior to 1881, unlike the 43rd, 51st, 52nd, 68th, 71st, 85th or 90th.

Thank you John,
A old and bad source “Uniformes et Armes Soldats du XIX° Siècle Tome 1 and 2 “(but they are nice books anyway) that made me lose all my afternoon yesterday !
So the only British infantry regiment – purely light – during the Sikh wars, is the HM 60th ?
