I have started a loosely linked Great War campaign using FOW Great War rules backdated to 1914. I am slowly buying and painting up Minifigs and QRF/TSS 15mm figures.

The first game Brave Little Belgium was yesterday and as I thought the Germans steamrolled over the Belgians. I wanted to do a German French game but don’t have enough French to make it happen just yet. So I plan to do part of Mons in two weeks.

I can’t do links on this computer. But I did get pictures and a sorta kinda AAR on my facebook page I’m Jonathan Keepers so if you want to see it just look me up over there.

    Thanks Guys !!!

Got a 24 pack of Minifigs French Inf. in yesterday and should receive more in the next day or so.  By the time I get them painted QRF and TSS should be back from vacation and I can order more thru Scale Creep Miniatures.

I need to base up more British and German Inf.so that I can try to do part of Mons in two weeks.

    More later.

    Hi Jonathan

How effective were the artillery? Was it mostly firearms that did the damage?

Because of the lack of staff teams I had Arty range in each turn but made the Cav recon and they lifted gone to ground and or helped the Arty range in. I also gave all field guns firing direct fire (out to 24 inches ) Shrapnel rounds that doubled the rate of fire per gun. So the two Belgian guns and the two MG’s ( oh and went back to 0 shots if moved) did most of the killing. I also gave the Belgian’s two forts as the fight was around Liege with staff teams but the Germans with Infantrie Vor ( Kinda like Avanta)   kept moving up.  So the  Arty had to keep ranging in each turn.

In the end there were just too many Germans for the Belgians to stop.

Sounds pretty much like the way things went in real life!

Do the Germans in 1914 deserve Infantrie Vor? I don’t know that they were any more mobile than any of the other armies of the time. I think the idea of giving the French an ‘Avanti’ move would have some merit given the attaque a outrance philosophy. I was going to try that when I get my armies ready to play.

    I like the shrapnel idea.

I’m giving the Germans Infantrie Vor for 1914 only as they had the On to Paris /Time table drilled into them. But your right about the French as well. Will add that.

Oh and for the BEF’s mad minute (yes I know) I will give them a ROF 2 in defencive  fire if unpinned or 1 if pinned but not add the plus one.

A tragic case of Belgian waffling.  LOL

What happened to the Princess on with the White Horse with the Dog.

I’m guessing she was a real historical charter?

That is my Grand Daughters figure she Is Cameron Princess of Belgian with her horse  and dog.  She likes horses and dogs so….. no harm came to her.

Mad Minute sounds perfect. Recycling Germans as in the FoW Great War rules will work well in a Mons scenario – need open flanks to work around too.

I plan to rate the BEF as Confident Veterans for 1914 only then drop then to Confident Conscrits for 1915-16 then Confident Trained in 1917-1918.  With British Bulldog all thru.

I also plan to have the Germans out number the BEF by 2 to 1 for Mons .

Wish I was a faster painter and could get more figures done.

I’d have a combination of conscript and veteran in 1915, some of the Old Contemptible were still around. I’d take it step by step for 1916. 1st July conscript, but by September probably trained. different units would have different ratings, it depends who you are attempting to model.

Huh, well that would work as well, I’m just painting the out lines of what I plan to do. I don’t worry so much about points as I don’t do tournaments any more (I’m old !!)  Thanks for working on this with me !!!

Best to focus on 1914 for the moment and take it a step at a time.  I’m like you, I’m not going to bother with points either, just run with scenarios. You’ve made a great start though mate.

    Me To!

I’m thinking of going back over my American Infantry in the gas mask and giving them a better paint job than the quickie they got.

But so far I’ve just been playing on the computer.

More French British and Germans based and primed. But I’m running out of the FOW medium bases. I have more on order at my FLGS but it could take weeks before I get them.

I should have started this project a year or so ago. I’ve also assembled two RR armored cars.

No-one even asked them whether they wanted to goat to war…

Patience KB – I’m having to exert every iota of mine as my 1914 toys have not yet arrived. They were a pre-order, so not expecting them until next month.

Having said that, Mitchell’s Marauders turned up on my doorstep on Thursday and are now all put together. But I don’t have the Germans yet. I promise that as soon as I can I’ll be playtesting some mods!
