ParticipantHere is a blog with my tutorial for making tree stands in 6mm. It is my attempt to finally make my trees look less dreadful.

ParticipantNow, that’s a tutorial geared to my limited terrain making skills. I’ve got a big bag of cheap Chinese trees that indeed look awful, and have been trying to, as you say, make them look less awful. I think I’ll try some of your brute force techniques.
I did find some bases that make me optimistic that I can reach the “not as crap” goal. I like trees that are clumped together on an irregularly shaped base rather than based individually.

(I did smile at your refusal to mention the name of a paint colour, because it was in the other room. Quite understandable)!

ParticipantI think they turned out great in the end. I might have to try some of your techniques in the future as I build (grow) my woods for my scenery collection. Thanks for sharing.

KeymasterI did similar but with a less clumpy foliage and it does not look as nice as yours, though in the end I cheated and bought Woodlands Scenics ones:

Woodlands Scenincs are lovely, but expensive. I am trying to do what I can with what I have. What I have is: cheap Chinese trees, loads of clump foliage from years of stealing from my dad’s railway supplies. What I don’t have: Money.

Participantyears of stealing from my dad’s railway supplies.
It is how my brothers and I began. My dad would be furious when we would put our Shermans and soldiers on his railway and break it.
Thanks all for the kind words. It is a hard thing to accept that people like what I have made as I still feel like a complete beginner, even after 10 years of internet-aided improvement.

I remember my dad bought a railway gun for his trains. It was then I realized my little Airfix Germans and British figures were the same scale! Good times for my brother and myself.
I ended up with wargaming as a hobby; my brother has a big model railroad in his basement.

My brothers and I all went various directions, but none of us (all in our 30s now) followed my dad with railways beyond our early teen years. I am a wargamer/miniature painter, my older brother is a serious board-gamer, my younger brother is into table top wargames that all come in one box, and then other various model making.
I toy with the idea of a railway, but have nowhere for it to go, and again…trees.

Dude, I don’t think you can use that excuse; you’re into sci-fi, where “train tracks” can be on walls, ceilings, perpendicular to the sides of mountains…
You can doooooo iiiiiiiiiit!
