One period that has always appealed to me, for which I have no armies, is the Franco-Prussian War.
I own a dozen boxes each of rather nice 20mm plastic French and Prussian Infantry. I assumed at some point I would find suitable cavalry and guns in the same scale that appealed, but never have. So, they sit unpainted and still in their boxes.
10 years back I purchased some samples of Essex 15mm Prussians. They are not painted either 🙂
Now, buying more stuff seems very foolish. Foolish Patrick, Fooolish. But I do have a friend with both sides, and would like to be able to play some games at some point, probably with the Fire and Fury variant that’s out there, or Black Powder if not. Both give good games with similar outcomes I have found.
soooo….. I really feel I should buy some 15mm FPW and knock out some armies. I have been a good boy during lockdown, putting the hour a day I save working from home to good use, stripping and repainting my whole Macedonian army, going through my box of shame and painting THOSE skaven, those Foundry Early Germans, Those Casearian Light Cavalry…. even Those Plastic Arab Cavalry boxes – and I think i deserve a treat. I do . I deserve it.
My question – the Essex figures are a very old range I think, are they still good enough? I only own about a hundred, should I dump them in the OTHER box of shame and buy from someone you good people recommend, or should I keep on and buy the rest from Essex?

Get 10mm from Pendraken instead. They are lovely figures that paint up a treat. It will be a new adventure.

I second Pendrakens superb and extensive 10mm range for this period. Their 19th century range is second to none!
The FPW is a fascinating conflict that sees the birth of Germany in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.

Third the Pendraken! And I say this despite having 15mm FPW Prussian and French from Outpost and Freikorps respectively. I bought some samples of the Essex when they first came out, but to my tastes they seemed a bit too…hobbity. Torsos seemed too large if memory serves, so the proportions looked off. To me anyway. I’m sure once they were painted up, they would look quite nice.
Freikorps (well, QRF now) are closer to true 15mm, but I love their FPW cavalry especially. The Outpost are good, although a trifle thin and taller than my Freikorps.
Still, I’m much happier with my 10mm armies of the period from Pendraken.15/07/2020 at 09:30 #140372
Soooooo the suggestions are that I should buy 10mm instead? Nooooooo not gonna 🙂
I will look at Freikorps thanks 🙂15/07/2020 at 09:39 #140373
You need old Freikorps not new to fit with Essex.

do i? To hell with it, Essex it is .
This may well be the last army i paint in 15mm, my eyes are not what they once were, so ‘OK’ will do
edit – the last one apart from all the other ones sat unpainted giving me accusing looks I mean 🙁15/07/2020 at 13:14 #140385
All of the old ones are still available. Tell the nice men at QRF and they will sort you out. Also sign up for their newsletter and you will get a 10% discount. Like Tony above my FPW armies are Freikorps.
