Keymasterthe splitting of sci fi boards by scale.
Yes, the 15mm Sci-Fi Traders requested it, and we have a fair few of them on here so it was done.
That meant we needed a 15mm forum and a not 15mm forum, which I called General Sci-Fi and I moved across all the non-scale specific topics.
That left 6mm and 3mm in a sort of limbo.
So I made them a forum too.Now, if like me, you like all sci-fi regardless of scale then you can subscribe to the Sci-Fi parent topic and get a notification of all new sci-fi topics regardless of which child forum they are in.
Then if you like that topic you can subscribe to it.
If you don’t, then don’t subscribe.I guess people wanted it as they are familiar with it, and it makes it ‘easier’ to look for sci-fi threads by scale rather than searching for keywords or tags in topics.
It can work for you if you do the subscription thing and should not impact your enjoyment at all.

I find the atmosphere here much more pleasant and full of more congenial spirits than other hobby forums I could haunt. Frankly, I have quit visiting other forums, just post on them to drum up interest in Ivan’s 5 Core games.

Indeedy, and if your work’s IT block TWW you can still get an idea what is going on as the e-mail notifications contain the message text too.
You don’t even need to visit the site to use it!I find the atmosphere here much more pleasant and full of more congenial spirits than other hobby forums I could haunt.
Thanks, I really want TWW to be a a nice community where like minded folk can enjoy the hobby with each other.

ParticipantI have to be a dissenting voice in that I don’t use the notification by email feature because the last thing I want is more email…
I like the Lead Adventure Forum (and it is now my forum of choice because of this) because I can go there – click on new posts since I last visited and catch up regardless of whether it has been 2 hours or a week.
Treefrog Treasures Toy Soldier forum also offers the same ability and it is something that I always disliked about TMP.

Alas I am not sure this software allows that.
There is the latest posts section on the front page though and latest topics.But I am curious, with the new posts since last visit on LAF, what happens if half the new topics are of no interest to you?
Do you have to read them before moving on, or is it a summary of titles?
And what if you have been away for say 5 months, could there not be hundreds of topics to wade through?
I am asking as whilst I have a LAF account I don’t go there much as there is not a lot of 6mm sci-fi so I have never used this feature..🙂

ParticipantIt gives you a list of topic titles that have been updated – it is a list of “New posts since last visit”, not “unread posts” which means I don’t have to read any of them.
I generally scan down the list (even if its 5 page) and see if I want to read anything.
Then, when I next visit I get a new list….

I can take rational, even-handed censorship or no-holds barred. What I cannot stand are rules that get applied to some and not to others based on personal preferences. Which is why I post at here, LAF and Frothers. Frothers for the politics and comedy and the freedom to say exactly what I want, LAF for the breadth and here for the camaraderie. Plus TWW is way more into microscales than LAF..
We get slapped around, but we have a good time!

The secret is having only one general board for clowning around and having a chinwag, if everything else is kept strictly wargame, histrory and miniatures related and focused TWW should remain solid.

Ah, but you can use WordPress’ content management with a SMF forum. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Well, they are if your Host supports one but not the other.
The three biggest issues with an online startup community are:
1. Free vs Paid
2. Security
3. Ease of Setup/AdministrationI probably lean toward SMF because my “real” job is software development.
