My latest blog is a short review of some of the stuff I have been up to recently (spoilers, it’s mostly Gaslands!)

How does it read, does it play fast do you know?

I’ve not played it yet, obvs, but it seems to be a fast game, as it should be. Basically you choose a manoeuvre template and that’s the measuring done. You have to use the one you first touch as well! Theres hazards that build up if you do too many crazy moves which could wipe out a vehicle. Firing is a case of rolling the weapons attack dice with the defender rolling armour dice to negate hits. There seems to be a lot of nuances in the movement, but I think a couple of games will help it to make sense. I’m looking forward to trying it out.

Dark Future was a sluggish game, this seems to be a trimmed down and elegant version.

That is what was putting me off, Dark Future looked cool, but was tedious to play and for me totally failed to be high octane thrills.

Absolutely,  it was like watching paint dry, this seems much faster. I play a lot of Wings of Glory which has a similar movement mechanic and that is very fast.

Thanks for posting. I’ve also bought Gaslands Refuelled and a few of the Implements of Carnage sprues. Now to actually read the rulebook…

Cheers Rhoderic, I hope you like the game! I enjoyed reading the rules and it’s a nicely produced book.

Yes, it definitely looks great, which is a factor I’m not ashamed to say I genuinely do value when it comes to rulebooks. Inspiring artwork and photos, and nice graphic design in general.

Gone are the days of stapled together A5 booklets with black and white line drawings…

I kind of don’t mind that if the rules themself are good. And the price reflective. Makes me a bit nostalgic. Though full colour eye candy is also good.

Yeah, that sentence wasn’t a criticism of them. I cut my wargaming teeth on A5 booklets and wouldn’t change a thing. I like looking through copies of old rules I used to own when I see them for sale at wargaming shows (I should never have sold them in the first place…). I guess the opposite is also true, eye candy is good, as long as the rules are good as well!

What are the differences to the original Gaslands? Are there any improvements beyond those extensions on the homepage or is there no addiditonal material?

Sorry buddy, I can’t help you there as I never had the original. But I think essentially the refuelled book has drawn together a lot of the extra rules from various forums, and the like.
