Cool. At the risk of being anal…

Can I just check you mean mod podge, rather than modge  podge?

    Mod Podge I have.

My progress slowed due to catching the virus!

I’ve finished my containers and started work on what should be (hopefully) my last terrain pieces for this project. I’m very happy with the containers as they took very little effort 🙂

And I started on some raised platforms from 30mm thick XPS foam. The idea is to use them with 1-2 small buildings on them and have bridge/gang planks between them, or down to the ground. I made sure they can fit in my box in one layer and I can stack other terrain on top of them. I’ll add more cardboard sections to the top and lots of rivet and bolts, along with more details

    Cheers

The raised platforms are a neat idea – high enough to create a clear barrier but should not dominate the table.

What colour are you thinking of (grotty / heavy weathered I assume) – concrete, grey or something more industrial?

Yes another shade of grey and heavily weathered. I’ll probably add some green washes around the bottom so they can be used in a watery mat in the future.

As I’m typing this I’m thinking that I should add more, so the next batch will be 10mm high (as that’s the next thickness down of XPS foam I have).

The walls are finished*. They were painted primarily with an airbrush and then I added some subtle rusty metal parts and a few posters to break up the colours.

These will be very useful for games and I can use the pieces together to create a compound

    * I noticed I missed the highlights on the lights.

There’s been some more detailing on the platforms and I started on another set of 3. These are 10mm high so it will give me a mix of heights and shapes. Both sets are designed to fit in a 29x31cm box, each as a single layer.

The details are a mix of thin card, textured plasticard and some MDF frames

The building phase of the first 3 platforms is finished. I drilled holes in each plate and also added some smaller details and nuts that were put cast in greenstuff off some other pieces.

I’m planning to paint them a light brownish-grey with lots of rust and weathering. Somehow these futurist civilizations haven’t figured out how to make rust resistant materials!

Why shouldn’t Sci Fi figures wear lace war style uniforms 🙂

I got some spare time in the weekend (a rare event lately) so I quickly setup a solo game of Planet 28. I’m planning a big game with 6 players the following weekend so I really need to iron out the rules and parties. Also it was nice to finally use my terrain after starting this project almost 9 months ago!

This game was the first game from the Planet 28 solo supplement, and it is the first part of the Escape from Lychester. So here are some pictures along with a hastily put together battle report.

The sleepy town of Lear. The objective to get from the spaceport to the airlock gate in the opposite corner (red and grey walls) with at least 50% of the party.

The party who have just landed on this planet

The local rebels having a committee meeting, and deciding whether or not to attack the party

First turn. The rebel got initiative and moved towards the adventurers

Meanwhile the party advance unaware of the threat

Shots are fired and the party finds themselves attacked from 2 directions and nowhere to retreat!

Things get up close and personal. The first rebel worker is killed. Meanwhile the other rebels have wounded a couple of party member with their pistols

The rebels win the initiative and overwhelm the adventurers. Things are looking grim.

After softening up the party with shooting, some more rebels charge in and one of the party is killed

Realising they need to break off, the party tries to edge past the rebels. But they almost all are engaged in combat. They still haven’t killed enough rebels.

Finally the adventurer get revenge. One of the rebels is killed and then but one of the rebels break and begins to run away (I’d forgotten the morale rules up to this point).

Another rebel breaks and routs, but time is running out for the party to reach the airlock. There are still a lot of rebels in the way to their goal.

Another party member down. After being shot at a few times they succumb to a rebel charge and are killed. With only 5 members the party can’t afford another casualty.

The party break off and try to move towards the airlock.

After killing another rebel they turn to each other and yell “Lets get the f&^k out of here!”

One rebel continues to chase but the adventurers get the initiative and put some space between them

Unfortunately it is all in vain as only one of the party makes it to the airlock in time!

Overall it was a great game and very tense. The party (I really need to give them some names) struggled to shoot the rebels and paid the price in terms of casualties and winning. The rebels also had 2 rounds where they won the initiative and were able to inflict a bit of damage.

Thanks, sometimes it was a struggle to find the right bits and I didnt have many highly detailed bits. I’ve still got a lot left over and I’ll probably throw some of it out.

If it’s one thing I’ve learned, NEVER throw out bitz, you’ll always want them later!

Great looking game.  Sounds like the time limit, not just the casualty limit, really put the party in a bind.  Getting bogged down in melee saw to that.

The remaining platforms are finished. These are only about 10mm high and constructed using mostly cardboard and XPS foam, with some textured plasticard.

I’ll paint these and the taller ones in the same batch.

I’m catching up on some recently finished terrain, and the platforms are all finished. I wanted to paint both sets at the same time so their looked similar.

I painted them with a undercoat of mod podge and grey gesso. Then I painted all the grey with an airbrush and also highlighted the panels and edges with the airbrush. Next I “chipped” the edges of all most of the panels with white on a sponge, followed by some olive green chipping. Finally I added some brown and green washes and then rust effects using a Vallejo rust wash.

    Taller platforms

How they fit together in the box

Superb work as usual – these platforms are such an excellent idea – particularly with the differing levels – will give a 3D feel to any ‘flat’ gaming surface – so much more interest to the eye, and a definite Spacey/Sci-Fi look.

Some great painting there, too – the ‘chipping’ effect with the sponge is another cool idea !

I’m surprised at how much I like the green chipping, it adds more depth than I thought it could and complements the grey quite well.  A new trick for me to try, many thanks!

Yeah me too. I wanted to create a different “shade of grey” for the platforms compared to all the other grey buildings I’ve painted.

Recently I ran a 6 player game of Planet 28 on a 3x3ft board, using the terrain featuring this thread (actually it was only about 1/2 the terrain so I could fill a 6x4ft table I think). Its nice to see it down on the table and being used.

Here’s a teaser with the board setup and some of the starting factions with a game report to follow.

Here’s some photos from a six player game of Planet 28 I put on. The figures were a mix of manufacturers including Stargrave figs, CP Models, GW, Reaper and Grenadier.

It was meant to be a free for all game with 9 supply objectives to capture, but the Alien Federation, Poultry Rights Front and the crew of the ship SS Nirvana ganged up against the Mutant Followers of the Seed. The other 2 factions – the Miners union and the Interplanetary Cops mostly fought each other with a few shots between the Miners and the Chickens.

The game ran for 8 turns with a chance to go an extra round or two. I used activation cards for each faction along with event cards. Some of the event cards could end the round immediately so some factions didnt get a turn.

    Poultry Rights Front starting position

Some of the Miners Union with a civilian

    Mutants

    The crew of SS Nirvana

A SS Nirvana crew member and a mutant contesting supplies in the middle while the rest look on. in the foreground is the Alien Federation, who must have had jammers as I never got a decent picture of them all game!

The Mutants who mostly had hand weapons, have charged into HtH combat with the crew of SS Nrivana. The giant Ape (from Reaper) proved a handful and was armed with a power fist.

The table in the second or third turn of the game. Chickens in the foreground, Miners in the distance and an elusive Alien in the bottom right of the photo.

    Combat over an objective

Interplanetary Cops fighting against the Miners Union robot

Miners Union (in orange pants) vs the Cops (with white helmets and black body armour)

Chickens advancing in the foreground with Alien federation, Mutants and the remnants of the SS Nirvana crew in the distance.

The victors at the end of the game – The Poultry Rights Front. Basically no one shot at them and it was a large faction so they were able to capture 3 objectives

I’m a believer. why should men fighting ten thousand years hence dress as if they’ve escaped from some corporate update of the Vietnam war
We need a campaign for properly dressed science fiction

I wonder if it would be worth starting a thread for properly dressed Sci Fi 🙂

Here’s a couple of basic platforms that featured in the game above. They were made using some cross stitch grate and GW warhammer unit base pieces.

Also I’ve started on some bridges and ramps to connect the platforms together. This is a model I started on earlier and didn’t really have a plan for it, but now with the platforms I made, it will work as a bridge between them. Its made primarily from Conflix pieces as a quick and easy build.

Here’s a couple more scatter pieces I finished recently. I 3D printed these 6 months ago, but then they sat in my pile because I didnt know what to do with them! When I was working on the platforms recently, it dawned on me that these would look great mounted on them. So I made the bases and finished painting them.

The next lot of terrain completed is my gangplanks. I painted them in a similar shade of grey to the platforms so they would match.

I didn’t measure them when I made them, but they fit very well in with my thinner platforms and the larger gangplank is almost the same height.

Nice – those colours really make the small pieces ‘pop’ – and if you freehanded the picture on the green screen, that’s pretty darn good !

I was thinking, now you have the gangplanks /gantries – throw a blue cloth under the whole, and you’ve got Waterworld ….. !

Just need a web-footed Kevin Costner in miniature…….

Lol, yes that’s the idea or possibly a world in the clouds. Maabe with toxic water and gangplanks and barges and other vessels. I have so many other terrain projects waiting, I think I’ll have to come back to this.

Here is my last planned pieces for this project although I’m still have an itch to make more!

One of the Planet 28 scenarios from Escape from Lychester has a toxic river and toxic pools. I decided to make some extra bits which will work in other games such as Mutants and Death Ray guns.

The pieces are mounted on 1mm plywood which the groundwork made from a mix of polyfilla, sand, caulk and paint. I painted the “water” part of the bases varying shades of brown.

The water part was Woodland scenics Realistic water mixed with a bit of green and brown ink which turned into a nightmare. My bottle was over 10 years old and it was the middle of winter here, so it was very damp in my garage. The first patch cracked really badly when it hardened. I poured another layer but I was a bit careless spreading it around and ended up with a lot of air bubbles. This helped a bit with the cracks but they were still visible. So I added another layer which hide the air bubbles and cracks a bit more.

At this point I had to either throw them out and start again, so I tried with a damp brush to reactivate the water and smooth it out. It helped in some places but other were a bit murky. So I poured one more thin layer and decided to embrace any remaining imperfections. ;D

In the photos you can see some of the cracking and murky patches, but fortunately it works for a toxic river and pools.

Also I added some green and rust paint to the water and I only lightly mixed it, and so the effect was pretty good.
