I’m returning to WW2 in the Western Desert and need to beef up my Italian forces for the CD:ToB scenarios in Benghazi Handicap. The problem is that Heroics & Ros don’t appear to do some of the ordnance and vehicles called for. So, can anyone help me find models of the following that are compatible with Heroics & Ros figures?

    Breda 20mm AA gun

    Breda 20mm AA portee

    Fiat Tripoli Armoured Car

    65mm Infantry Gun

    Dovunque truck (not office body)

My existing collection is all H&R, so I am looking for figures that are compatible with them. That means that GHQ is no good for me, sadly. On the other hand, I am happy to consider proxies that pass the 3′ test without looking excessively out of place. So, any suggestions, please?

Hi there, it’s been many moons since I blew the dust off my 1/300th Italians, but I remember similar struggles picking up proxy vehicles where none were readily available…..

for what it’s worth, a few dimly remembered ideas:

for the 65/17 gun, Scotia do a 65mm mountain gun in their Polish forces:

IIRC, it has some very long trail pieces that need cutting down, but otherwise looks the part.

for the Autoblinda Tripoli, the closest I got was the Erhardt armoured car of WW1 – Scotia, Irregular and H&R I think all do a version of this:

Breda 20mm wise, wasn’t their something in the H&R Italian infantry Heavy Weapons pack? If not, I have vague memories of either using a tripod mounted AA mg from the Russian WW2 Infantry Heavy Weps, or even a German Flak 20 with the shield cut down…..

finally, the Dovunque was the Holy Grail of lost causes, I think, in that the GHQ version is beautiful, but would be flippin’ huge next to anything from H&R….

hope this helps – good luck with your quest!

Thanks for the tips. I’ll go and check them out next. I’ll have a look at the Italian heavy weapons pack again for the 20mm but I don’t recall it being in there.

For the Dovunque, I was considering working with the H&R version and cutting the office body off, but that might be more work than I am willing to put in. We’ll see.

Your mention of the Polish mountain gun has reminded me that Irregular do a WW1 Italian mountain gun. I think I even have one in my WW1 Italian army. Time to check that one out.

    Thanks, once again.

Hiya, sounds like my cobwebbed memory might be misfiring on the 20mm – but it has been a while!

As you rightly said, a bit of the ‘3 foot rule’ in the smaller scales and you can get away with some ‘looks like is good enough’ …..

Another item I always felt was lacking in true (H&R) 1/300th was the SPA TL 37 – the artillery tractor with the really big tires – I did a rough conversion from US Dodge weapons carriers that looked passable, but I wish Ian Armstrong had got around to increasing the range he was doing for the Italians – the Dovunque radio truck is great, but we needed its more common and useful stablemate!

It might be my cobwebbed memory, not yours. Thinking about it, I wonder if I ever got the heavy weapons pack originally. It’s so long since I bought the armies originally, that I have forgotten loads about what was in them, and the armies seem much smaller than I remember them being! Anyway, I’ve ordered a bunch of stuff from H&R, including samples to check pack contents and whether they will suit my needs. The initial order covers the additional bits I need for the Allies and the DAK. The samples will guide me in buying the rest for my Italians. I’ll report back about the heavy weapons pack when I get it.

Yes, Ian Armstrong needs to get on and make a proper Dovunque. If I cannot find anything else suitable, I’ll just use generic truck models for them, but it would be nice to have the proper model. Also, the SPA TL  37. Totally. He needs to do that too.

Remember that the Italians also had beute vehicles from when they invaded southern France.

Thanks for the reminder. I reckon I can use a bunch of different stuff for all sides in the desert, especially the transport. Still waiting on my order from H&R to check a few things before I make a final order and can get around to not painting the figures.
