This is another “I want someone else to do the searching” thread. Life is too short to be traipsing through hundreds of .stl download sites and searching through thousands of files.

I’m trying to find .stl files of generic merchant ships from around 1910-1944. Preferably 1/3000, because I’m really lazy now I’ve retired, and I can’t be arsed rescaling them. 1/2400 is OK if I must.

Don’t mind buying them. I’m idle, not tight. Shapeways pre-prints can do one though, I can knock them out myself at 1p a dozen.

    Cheers m’dears 🙂

Of you’re really lazy rather than right get the Navwar 1/3000 ships

I’ll take a look for stls later. Sure I’ve got a few from somewhere bookmarked.

I thought the proprietor of Navwar was hors de combat after a fall?

Besides I can bang out a couple of dozen in far less time than it takes to fill out the paper order form and post it 🙂

Huge selection. Drop him a note as to what you want.

I get most of my 1/4800 ships from him but I believe he sells STL files as well.

News to me. Any word on how bad a fall? I wish him a swift recovery, he’s a nice guy.

Was planning a small 1/1200 ACW buy. Perhaps I should wait.

Read about it on The Musty Prostate a while ago. Haven’t seen any updates though.

Thanks for that, but as I said, I’d rather print my own. They’re for a one off scenario and I need about two dozen.

War Times Journal, which sadly only offers 3D digital downloads these days, has two First World War merchant ships, as well as a beautiful model of the Otranto, here: https://www.wtj.com/wtj20553.html.

I realize that those may not be exactly what you are looking for. I suggest them only because many of the merchant ships built in the First World War were still steaming the world’s oceans 25 years later. I think you would have found plenty of these older ships in a typical Atlantic convoy. Your two dozen number suggests perhaps an Arctic convoy, for which these would not be quite so good as many of the ships on the Arctic convoys were newly built Fort, Liberty and Victory ships.

    Good luck in your search.

Thanks Admiral. I never gave WTJ a thought!

As you say, merchant ships tended to be in service, unaltered, much longer than naval vessels.

I’m not being too fussy about what the ships actually are as long as it’s obvious that they’re merchants.

An update from the flyer received from NAVWAR with my order today.  Ill-health is forcing closure and the business is now selling off existing stock.  My order involved unusual ships (Greek & Dutch WWII fleets) so although I used second-class post I got mine in 10 days with a complete order!  Superb service.  I suspect if you want more popular lines you will have to include substitute choices as the available stock runs out.

Should anyone be interested, the business would be sold as a going concern.

Easy enough to run off two batches of 12, I just have to get motivated to paint the buggers 🙂

Inevitable, I suppose, Tony must be in his 80s.

End of an era. I hope someone picks up the business.

According to David Manley, who seems to have deserted TWW recently, Navwar is NOT closing. Tony is looking to sell the business as a going concern, until then he’s still taking orders.

Do tell more.  The NAVWAR website has been down for several weeks.

    Yeah, I know.

Strange isn’t it? Someone’s misinformed, but who?
