Yes, it’s 2023 and while many things may change, you can rely on Miniature Wargames for a wide selection of gaming topics and styles. In number 478 of Miniature Wargames – we have another superb issue!

On the cover we have The Sun and Bear: This is an introduction to the Russo Japanese war at the beginning of the 20th century with both simple rules and some ideas for this unique environment.

Command Decision. A Coat Of The Very, Very Best: Campaigning in the Horse & Musket period. Author Jon Sutherland begins a three part series. This time he deals with Movement, Supply, Scouting and After Battle Mechanics.

In Send Three And Fourpence Conrad Kinch tries out the new Xenos Rampant system from Osprey Rules and puts Dan Mersey’s new system through a ‘40k style’ scenario.

In Hit the Beach we have a Napoleonic beach landing in 28mm with a solo adaption for Black Powder.

In Warhead we have some super-spy scuba shenanigans – with subs! All done in 20mm with lots of conversion work and modelling, this is the first of a two-parter: rules next month.

We have a double Scratchbuild session in two scales: an Egyptian Pylon (in 15mm or 28mm (well, they’re quite big…) or an Epic Scale ACW cottage.

The Editor takes his camera to the WAR show in Reading at its new venue.

With Recce we have a large selection of reviewed reading material featuring splendiferous publications to pique a wargamer’s interest.

In Defence In Depth we present the latest in figure and rules reviews.

In Quartermaster, we take a look at some Two Thin Coats paint.

The Last Word has some thoughts on When wargaming is no longer fun.

    Enjoy!

    “Epic Scale ACW”

Does Epic Scale now mean Warlord Games?

To me Epic is 6mm due to GW making a game called Epic in 6mm.

With you Mike, Epic is 6mm. Not 13.5mm…… it’s small but not small enough to be epic IMHO ☺️

    Epic? Interesting distinctions!

Without taking one side or the other, consider the following (and discuss!)

1: It’s been several years since GW last made any of their ‘Epic’ ranges. Perhaps whoever claims the nomenclature ‘hill’ of Epic is whoever is (left) still standing on the ground? I would argue that it’s probably no longer GW.

2: Anyone that thinks that GW’s ‘Epic’ was 6mm needs to pop down to Specsavers*… They were always bigger than that. (*other opticians are, of course, available)

3: Are GW even classed as part of ‘regular wargaming’? They’ve spent years and much capital explaining that they run a thing called “The Games Workshop Hobby” rather than (for want of a better term) ‘traditional wargaming’ so is it any more (or less) appropriate than the use of ‘epic’ in any similar product? Say, the Epic Computer games company (founded in 1991).

Personaly, I’d rather the product range (any range) was branded with a scale (whoever makes it – GW or Warlord) and that folks then stuck to it, really.

    What do you think?

I will have to go to the shed and get some out, but this seems to suggest that 6mm Epic was as 6mm as any ‘scale’  claims to be what it is?

    Yes, why not?
The most regular I would guess.
I would be surprised, nay amazed if their games were not the most played.

This is an argument I can see both sides of 🙂
Given their rules are regularly as unplayable as any produced by genuine wargamers, their figures when picked up second hand at reasonable prices grace many SF or medieval collections, and many people who play multiple rulesets include some written by GW, I think they probably are.
I agree they claim to be something other than what they truly are, but if it walks like a duck etc 🙂

Lke Jim, I can see both sides of the position: I like his duck argument.

As W.C. Fields said: “It ain’t what they call you, it’s what you answer to.”

    I feel I have to reply…..

The use of the EPIC SCALE in the title was purely shorthand to identify the scale as Warlord Games Epic ACW scale. It was never meant to be anything other than a simple way for me to identify the model as suitable for the Warlord Games ACW figures and rules or 12mm (or there about’s).

I still feel that this is justified in this instance, but in future Warlord Games tutorials maybe I’ll find another piece of shorthand.

    I reckon 12mm Wargames Terrain.

    As it is shorter than

    Epic Scale Wargames Terrain

And makes it very clear what size models it is meant for?

But then I am a KISS person (mostly).
But also, your article, call it what you will, I retain the right to be both confused and grumpy however   😀   😀

Say, is it just a coincidence that Crusader Miniatures seem to be coming out with a range of RJW figures?  I must say, they look quite nice!  Lovely to see that this interesting war is getting some press and manufacturer attention.

And, while I have played a few incarnations of GW Epic in years past, I realize that whenever I see that term now, I know it applies to Warlord’s ACW and Napoleonic bastard scale.
