    All,

Operation Pay-Off is a series of three fights based on Ambush Alley Games’ scenario book, “Lawyers, Guns, and Money.” Of course, in this fight the Ambassador and his escort is about to be ambushed, their vehicles disabled. The mission of A Squadron is then to move the Ambassador to the hotel at bottom right, set up a secure perimeter, and attempt to establish comms with the outside world (a Quick Reaction Force). The first fight went so long I’m actually breaking it into two separate battle reports.

The table, 2′ x 2′, north is up, with the three-vehicle convoy already parked in front of the cafe at top left. The hotel/rally point is at bottom right. The good guys (A Squadron) have sixteen men in four teams to protect the Ambassador. The bad guys start with four five-man teams on the table, and every time five of them are eliminated they are reconstituted as a team and re-enter the table at a random location (a ‘hotspot’ in Ambush Alley/Force on Force terminology).

Things are heading south quick. The ambush is sprung, and insurgent team pops up on a roof and launches an RPG. To see how Part 1 turned out, please check the blog at:

Stay tuned. This weekend we should be able to finish this game, and I’ll get it posted as soon as I can.

    Great report, as always.

This is looking like a tough one, hope you pull it off in part 2 with minimal casualties.  I gave in and bought 5Core, I’m planning something sci-fi for my first use of it.  I really like your use of beads to mark status, I’ll need to pick up some for when I’m ready to play (once I make terrain, model figures, make moulds, cast them and paint them – no rush on getting the beads  ).

    Thanks.

    Jack:

You are an excitable boy! I hope you were playing Warren Zevon tunes while you were playing the three scenarios. I haven’t read the report carefully yet but the title of ,”Lawyers, Guns and Money”, forced me to congratulate you on an excellent title for the series. Lord, I miss Zevon, he passed too soon. I expect to see a headless, Norwegian, Thompson gunner some time soon! Now I’m going to listen to some Zevon or Hindu Love Gods just to stay in this groove.

    Cheers and good music.

Vicki – thanks, and I’m hoping we (the boy and I are playing co-op) pull it off with minimal casualties, too!  There are two more scenarios to go, and while the bad guys keep regenerating, you only get the guys that make it through each fight.

Glad to hear you picked up 5Core, I hope it serves you well.  And if you’ve questions, just ask!  I can’t wait to see what you start casting for this!

Rod – sorry man, I can’t claim credit for ‘Lawyers, Guns, and Money,’ that’s the name Ambush Alley gave it.  But I’d like to meet his tailor 😉

All three scenarios? We haven’t even finished the first one yet (that’s why this is Part 1, we still have to play Part2.

MThe game has a few too many guys for “Five Men in Normandy,” and I should have known that before we started.  For scenarios 2 and 3 I need to change this up; I’ll either split the scenarios in two to play smaller games, or give Ivan’s new platoon look a shot.

    V/R,

    Jack

My one problem with 5Core (and it’s not a really a problem) it that I bought the rules on Sunday and immediately read them through, then found they had issued an update and changed the system while I was reading.

And another update a day or two later.  Oh well, these are my first pdf rules, I suppose I should be thankful I didn’t print them out yet.

John – Relax, you’re no butterfly, you’re sticking with the same era and a lot of the same troops.  But with all those Battlefront vehicles, I believe someone needs to audit your finances 😉

Vicki – Yeah, with the way Ivan is constantly messing with all the rules, I don’t know if I’d ever print anything out! 😉

    hello Vicki,

i feel your pain.  I was making a QRS for 5Core Skirmish (3rd edition) a few weeks ago and the differences between 5Core 3rd, Five Men in Normandy, Five Men at Kursk and then some updates that keep coming.  There are of course major differences, but it is the minor ones such as who can rally Knocked Down, how many can Follow Me, Clear Targets reroll or +1K (Ivan fixed the latter last weekend!), terminology – Scatred Vs nervous Vs Pinned Vs hunkered down.  But it does mean you can pick and choose to suit what you think is ww2 combat!

I’ve spent 500 ish dollars at Game HQ since Jan of this year… I plan to spend around 200 for the Brits when they come out, as I want to do the Brit Air Landing Company for the BAOR . I want to do a bridgehead too far…..
