I just completed my first batch of Sci-fi vehicles by Brigade Models. My plan is to use them to play either Hellfire, Dirtside or Iron Cow 2103 rules. This is a small force with mostly infantry but I might add a few tanks to the army. I took quite a different approach to painting these and you can read my ramble here.

    A new Sci-fi army

    And a few closeups

I’ve got some infantry with just the basing left to do, which I should have finished in a few days and then more vehicles and infantry probably in the new year.

I was inspired to paint them along the line of some of the classic Sci-fi spacecraft and vehicle pictures by Stewart Cowley, who was the artist and author of the Spacecraft series of books on the fictional Terran Trade Authority.

    Cool.
    Is this the same series?

I just realised Chris Foss was the artist of most of the pictures in the TTA books, and Stewart Cowley wrote the text.

Same here, I check them out of our public library so much I probably wore them out!  I’ve been looking for a copy of Spacewreck for ages, couldn’t remember the author’s name, many thanks for the refresher!

Oh geez, getting some of those old books even used and in poor condition is around $80 at the lowest.  Ouch, that’s going to be an expensive collection…

Going off on a tangent from my original post, I found this interview with Stewart Cowley, where he mentions the Galactic Empires series

I found some PDF scans of the old books online, going to have a nostalgic view over the weekend!

So what will you next factions vehicles be?  What about color scheme?

Great, I have Great Space battles from when I was a kid and picked up Spacewrecks and Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD a couple of years ago. they are still very inspiring.I’m still trying to get Starliners. If you know anyone in NZ as there is a copy of Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD going for $20NZ at the moment on an auction site with no bids and close tonight.

For my next faction I have some of these halftracks, but I have come up with a color scheme yet

I read the heck out of those books when I was a kid. The forcible consolidation of all industry and commerce by the TTA was a bit… well, “authoritarian,” for lack of a better term other than the “f” word. But the artwork always got me. My introduction to the work of Peter Elson and Angus McKie, among many others!

I must admit the whole Terran Trade Authority passed me by entirely. Looking at the art work, some of it is familiar so either the style was copied or some of the illustrations appeared elsewhere

I believe there was a set of unused or previously-used production, cover and commercial science fiction artwork that got a narrative threaded around it. I don’t believe the former was in any way tailored to the latter.

I’ve finished my first batch of sci-fi infantry. This will be a mercenary/militia force but I haven’t figure out a name or organisation yet.

The figures are the lovely RDF figures from CP Models (formerly Angel Barracks). The bases are 3d printed and designed by me in Tinkercad and inspired by the GZG infantry bases (I’ve only ever seen these in photos).

The painting is lovely. The CP Models figures (Sorry Mike) are gorgeous. I love Brigade Models, but I have to admit those tanks with four mini track systems look impractical. Why not two long tracks?

The four small tracks as opposed to two long ones way have to do with steering? But they exist now

    Different orientation on the tracks.

Perhaps it helps if they throw a track, then it can still be driven on. But the main reason is that its scifi and the models look cool and slightly impractical!

Yes very nice painting on the vehicles, maybe impractical from a tactical viewpoint (or not; see cold war British armour in Berlin). Don’t care for the quad track trucks, too 40K impracticality vibe for me.

I like the irregular infantry bases. I have tons of infantry to base but haven’t settled on details such as number of figures per base so potential for me. One thing I keep considering is putting ID or game information on the stands, such as attack factors, defense factors, etc.. But that is based on which rules and how to utilize them. Other than very simple (hash) marks on the back of the bases near the rearmost figures no room to put detailed info on them. Of course these bases could be attached to larger (thin steel?) bases where the info could be placed. The irregular shapes of the bases would help break up a larger (rectangular?) base’s geometry possibly.

Really nice and distinctive! Those TTA books were a huge inspiration for me, too!

We get slapped around, but we have a good time!

Wow!  Love the paintjob on those vehicles, bet they will look great on a desert battlefield.  I’m not too keen on the dual treads on the tanks but I like it quite a bit on the longer vehicles.
