Actual progress!  Painted up some AFS mkII (Armored Fighting Suit), PKA H ‘Heinrichs’, Krote recon tank, PaK Krote support tank, HAFS Jerry, and PKH Grief.

It’s been a few months since I have painted any 6mm, and I have discovered that in that time my vision has shifted.  Perhaps my astigmatism is worse, but for whatever reason I am now seeing double whenever I try to focus on anything this small, even with my reading glasses or trying to use a loop or mag visor.  It seems like each eye has a different “lean” to the focus, so painting is now going to be a lot more difficult than before, as evidenced by these poor results.

Once I get more complete I will take better photos.  We have actually played 3 games using proxies, as my 3d printer hit a snag and I haven’t yet been able to print out some of the vehicles needed, just to get comfortable with the rules we have written.  Electronic warfare and the dogfight phase has added interesting twists…

Too bad about the eyesight. You sure it wasn’t just a long day? Happened to me atleast once. I think I was using my eyes at a certain range a lot and couldn’t adjust back to very close range.

The minis looks good. Will you be selling them? If so will they be cast metal or 3D printed?

Might have been, but I also notice it when shooting or reading.  🙁

Thanks!  Won’t be selling at all, I respect the IP too much and getting a license would probably be not worth while.  I could probably be convinced to pass along the print files or maybe some of the extra figs I have…

That’s a shame you wouldn’t be selling them, those are nice minis.

“…I also notice it when shooting…”

The image I had in my head was you printing 6mm minis as targets on a 300 yds range.

My chances of hitting something that small at that range at this age without a significantly powerful scope is basically nill!  Ahhhh take me back to my eagle eyed youth when I could bullseye womprats at speed in my T-16…

That’s a shame you wouldn’t be selling them, those are nice minis.

I may eventually post some up to the Kow Yokoyama FB group and see what the reception is there and if positive enough maybe pursue a Wonderfest license that would allow some side selling.  Would probably have to have a game to go with them and a nice box.  In that case they would indeed be done up into metal from expensive pro-prints.

Could also send you a couple of “samples” if you like… 🙂

Managed to get my printer back in action, needed to replace the optical sensor to stop the build plate from descending too far.  Anywho, here is the first SandStalker type 222F off the line.  I hit pause in the middle of printing to make sure it was running well, thus that deep line across the model.  Since I know it is working well again I will put a little more detail on this model by adding the pioneer tools and making the bottom lip thicker.  Those little fins at the back are deeeeeelicate, let me tell ya.

Now I can get the type 232M and 263M CC3 rigs printed.  Then the Dollhouse, the Nutcracker (Nuttrocker), the 251s, Type 63 carriers, fighters, then Gustavs and Konrads and Gladiatos and Kafers…etc etc…

    Very nice miniatures.

On another thread, as mentioned above, eye strain can make astigmatism come and go. Of course eyeglasses can correct that but lasik fixed mine until I had cataract surgery 🙁 Lasik was great, 16 years of great eyesight and then…

Oh man, that is crushing.  I just can’t have my eyes fiddled with.  My wife has kens implants and they’re great, but the singer for my band has had lasik like 8 times due to errors and her horror stories have turned me from it completely.  I know it has done much good for many people, but I am just way too paranoid about my sight.

Almost done with the 232M, though I decided to make the body symmetrical instead of that weird offset, it just didn’t look right in 6mm and was a bit too much work for so little gain.

Also started laying out the Shenckle.  Dude, that thing is HUGE.

I thought the line was panel line. You could fill the inside of the fins to strengthen it, at 6mm it woulnd’t be noticeable.

That is indeed a very good idea!  Thank you.  Am also going to add some hinges to make it just a little sturdier at the connection to the hull.

Operation Faserei in 6mm scale. Please!

Was actually thinking of using these as figures for the board game using large hexes and having the info on the chit bases at one point, but there’d be no way to “stack” some of the larger vehicles inside a hex.  Instead we are using a modification of those rules to be more skirmishy and having our own campaign, which will follow a small composite command on each side and take place in a “quiet” sector in NW Oz that slowly heats up.  It’ll include having to “pay” for newly researched units as well as some personality leaders/pilots/troops.  We have only played some test games to make sure it works (a little klunky and not fast play, but we do like it), and the SDR already can’t wait for the NutII, Oskar and Sphinx.  The first couple years are going to be real tough on them!  But I am guessing that he will make much more use of Griefs than “historical” (according to the boardgame scenarios) as they outgun the Jerry and can kill and AFS quite easily, and can probably use his air superiority to advantage for a while.  The IMA will probably try hard to kill off as many PKA Heinrichs and Sandstalkers as possible with AFS to hurt the SDR morale and mobility.  SInce the AFS outranges the PKA-H by a good margin they really could keep the advantage until the Gustavs start to roll out…

Anyhow, we will see how it goes, many more models to get done first!  Rearranged the production schedule.  So, after the Sandstalker 232M and Schenkle, will be the Sph69 hover transport (used by both sides as well as the SS), the PK40 (both sides), Makel/Seduce, Nuttrocker and Greenbuffalo and then we can get really started with all of the starting units.

Ya, the Ravin and a couple of others will use some of my Dark Star line vehicles as stand-ins.  I had forgotten that I need to do the Y-15/PzKw182, and in a way that allows easy conversion to the Dollhouse.

I have a new 15mm 4-wheeler for the Venturians that I am working into 6mm, and will use that as the Seduce/Makel despite the lack of 4 extra wheels.  For now anyways.

Some of the models from the now defunct Age of Tyrants line, available from Scotia, make good base units. Also the rising retro dieselpunk line from Microworld Games.

    make good base units

Ya, there is some good stuff out there.   I have some of the old GZG 6mm stuff, and it is too tiny to match up well. I’m not too worried about it though as most of those units phase out so early.  Really, as the war goes onward the ECM and ECCM becomes so prevalent and heavy that a lot of older units just can’t cope and so will be used a lot less anyways, relegated to garrison away from the combat areas.

Very few lines have the organic “drop forged” shapes that so many of the Ma.K. units have. Compound curves are missing from most of the middle year models available between the late 1990s and the early 2010s. I think 3D mastering is finally catching up.

A good starting point is: http://futchfactor.com/resources/sf3dgaming/

There is a brief timline there.  You can download PDFs of the 2 versions of the rules from various sources.  The scenarios have some good tidbits, though they are often dated out of sequence to what KY had stated in the various magazines over the years.

They are indeed supercool!  They are just a bit too small to be the Nutrockers (which are 10.8m long!) in scale, but they are excellent stand-ins for Oskars and F-boats.  I’m not sure how they compare to the Nut-IIs yet, as they are so much smaller than the Nut-I.  I am very glad I some!  It would have been very interesting to see what you (Mike) would have done with the Sphinx double-hull layout.

Newest Ma.K print: the SandStalker 232M

    232m

    …and my hand.

On screen, the detail on the 3d model looks HUGE, like the hatch on the nose, the dorsal engine covers and the vision slits, but they look so dinky on the print.  It also looks like I need to enlarge some of the items on the forward part of the rear hull flanks.  In the end I did indeed make the hull symmetrical, that offset always sort of bothered me.  The guns will be wire, and plenty of room was left for stowage to make each a bit different from the others.  And hey, that shovel and pickaxe came out well!

I am very sure they will ship it!  I like this printer so much I have been considering ordering the X10 with the larger build plate and increased number of LEDs.  This will help detail at such a small scale as well as reduce edge spread due to LED distance and fanning.  And I’d be able to print 6mm buildings!  (maybe even 15mm ones!)

Oh, and Thomas, your suggested design mod to the tail fins worked very well, thank you!

Finally got the Nutrocker finished.  It’s not perfect, but I think they’ll work.  I used twisty-tie wire for the antennas and railings, the bummer being we didn’t have any laying around the house that hadn’t already been bent into impossible geometries.  The guns on these SandStalkers is snipped pushpins.

Quick pix with my trash phone camera as I ran out the door to work this morning:

With the Nutcracker done I can now work on the Sph.69 hover trucks.  Will have inserts for carrying both SDR and IMA suits, as well cargo bed inserts for each side.  Then the Pk.41(s) and Fledermouse planes and I can get some fights going!  (well, in truth we have already played a few games over the internet using Roll20 and tokens made from the original board game counters, so I will post some photos as recaps when the figs are done).

Got the Dollhouse done and am working on the tank turret.  Will get pix of both when that turret is done.  Something doesn’t look right with the DH though.  I”m not sure if the turret isn’t tall enough, or if it’s the ratio of the width of the hull to the diameter of the turret.  I used the Hexamodel ( http://hexamodel.com/ ) instructions as the background for model creation so it should be dead on.  I couldn’t get the turret shape perfect, and at 6mm scale I ‘m not sure that the swelling at the top by the forward hatch could even be noticeable.  We will see how it prints.  Pix to come.

…and I just noticed that the Sph69 pic vanished.  Will put that up too.

Took some photos of the latest prints before I dashed out of the house for work this morning:

    Dollhosue and Sph69 truck

    D and 69

The Dollhouse turret printed perfect, but then after sanding down the support nubs I dropped it and broke the top missile box cover on the right side.  DOH!  Also, the roof canopy rails for the Sph69 didn’t print, so I used twisty-tie wire again.  Since the Sph69 is the basis for the Nutcracker in the canon of Ma.K  I just scooped out the sides and rejiggered the turret hole.  Nothing fancy.  I’ll be making PKA and AFS suit-rack inserts as well as cargo ones.

    Size comparison shot:

    2

I also reprinted both types of SandStalkers, but with thicker bottom lips.  This kept them from scalloping during printing like the one above shows along the bottom edge.

Here’s the Dollhouse vs other vehicles so far:

    1

If I was smart I would have taken that with them laid out orthogonal with the grid on the mat…

Next up: the flyers and tank turret for the DH chassis.

Thank you sir, I do appreciate it!

We have played a couple of battles online using tokens and to test the rules.  They are clunky but give the feel of the old boardgame rules of the 80’s while having a little bit more detail and an RPG-lite add.  The poor PKA are really no match for the AFS if they can’t survive to close the range, but the Nut really makes a difference, dang lethal!  Having air assets can really help.  One game there was a PK41 spotting for the single Nutcracker out there, and it alone accounted for over half the IMA force with it’s long range lazer! (120cm vs AFS 80cm).

Once i have at least the forces we are currently using done up I will post some photo AARs of missions we have run so far.  The going is slow though…
