I am making good progress on my 6mm dark ages (with some orcs thrown in) project. My orcs are done except for basing and my Norman’s are wrapping up.

i am ready to dive in on Vikings and Anglo Danes and would like to get some opinions. I am doing 1 base = 1 unit on an 80mm frontage and aimed at roughly Dux Bellorum sized battles.  I am torn between basing axe wielding huscarls as:

    1) separate units or

    2) Mixed in to regular spear armed units for upper class types

I am using baccus figures and have not settled on rules yet, but will probably start with modified Dux Bellorum. Opinions are appreciated, thanks!

I based my axe-wielding guys separately as veteran huskarls and the armoured spearmen as normal huskarls but that’s a purely artificial device to differentiate the two types in Impetus. A more realistic basing system would probably see a mix of the two. I would suggest that you try mocking up both options and see which you prefer the look of. With DB it’s not going to make a lot of difference so the aesthetics would be the decider for me.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I based mine up with ‘more’ axe-wielding lads in mail in some units, some in others and none in a few, but yes as Ruarigh says that’s really just more a function of your rules, and whether you need to be able to say ‘them’s what these rules class as Huscarls, those are what these particular rules class as Bondi’ etc.

I do feel ‘all one type’ in a unit looks way too organised for the Dark Ages.

Thanks guys, I am so wish washy. I am busy with work and have little time for painting right now, but I am finding I am suffering from analysis paralysis.

I will do some mockups by I think I’ll go with you guys suggestions and have…

    – armored spearmen with 50% of front rank axemen

    – armored spearmen with 20-25% front rank acemen

    – unarmored spearmen

and  course som obligatory skirmishing archers.

    thanks!

Now that sounds like a plan. I hope you’ll post photos when they are done.

I shall. I am slow right now, moonlighting on the side and cutting in to my gaming time!  I’ll do a big post when I have the Normans done and based.
