Bridges have been the sites of many famous actions in wars past and the Peninsular War was no different with these key choke points featuring in retreats and for their purpose of providing access across the major rivers flowing through the grain of the peninsula.

Turning south on our tour across the Peninsula we reached the Tagus Valley which effectively delineated the northern and southern theatres of the war and over which control of the limited crossing points became vital for the Allies and French alike.

The bridges at Alcantara and Almaraz were to play a key role for this control over this major river and this post takes a look at the places today and the action that occurred there.
