I was given a small lot of 20mm modern infantry miniatures, I sorted them out and I can put together two factions of 36 infantry figs. I would like to make two Imagi-nations in Central America, what rules could I use that are simple and fun, with infantry only? no support weapons, artillery, armour… free rules would be ideal.

The old WRG “Infantry Action 1925-1975” would handle this size of fight nicely, although they do have (quite abstract) rules for fire support and AFVs should you wish to add them.

They are available free from http://www.wrg.me.uk/WRG.net/History/OLDWRG/InfantryAction.pdf

You’ll get a security warning, but nothing bad happened when I downloaded them a few minutes ago, it’s just that as an old site they use an http rather than https address.

I must declare a slight interest here, as a major contributor to these rules was John Langley, my RSM when I was in the TA. That’s probably why they are still the only rules I have ever seen that inlide trip-flares.

    All the best,

    John.

AK 47 Republic was made for these sorts of conflicts.

We get slapped around, but we have a good time!

Along the same lines as AK47,  but perhaps a trifle lower scale is Hell and Uncivil Disorder.  To quote the esteemed author,

“The basic premise is that most people issued lethal weapons after minimal training aren’t particularly competent. The weapon you issue them with isn’t terribly important because they’re not using it properly anyway. But at least they turned up, you’ve got to give them credit for that”.

Jim Webster wrote them, and he’s a frequent contributor on this forum, so if you’ve got any questions I’m sure he’d answer them.  They’re available from Amazon.

    He’s here 🙂
The rules are also available from Wargame Vault as well as a pdf

They concentrate on Infantry, armour appears only as ‘MGIAT’ which stands for ‘My God its A Tank.’
But you don’t have to use them.

It the rules there is a relatively simple campaign which could well be set in a suitably corrupt Central American state

2hw’s Chain reaction is a good free go to.  I have played  it using 6-10 figure squads up to 4 squads per side although it really is best as one to two squad per player.

Oooh!  That’s right!  Completely forgot about those.    Time for a little reread, even if I don’t have any suitable figures.  I shamelessly admit that I find reading rules quite enjoyable in and of itself.

You don’t need a lot of figures, amazing what you can do with a couple of boxes of 20mm WW2 Americans is probably a good start 🙂
