Participantcheers! From what I saw there was reasonable balance between historics vis-a-vis scifi & Fantasy. Maybe my video was more orientated and biased towards the historical stuff, as that’s what I like and I didn’t film everything, largely through a lack of time. I don’t know, ask my shrink. I’ve seen others arguing elsewhere about a bias towards fantasy and sci-fi at Salute this year, but that may just be confirmation bias on their part. I went looking for historical stuff and found it in abundance. It seemed to be no more unbalanced or balanced than any other show I’ve been to recently.

ParticipantCheers Thomaston, you missed a good show!
I’ve just crunched the numbers from the games listed in the show programme. They give them the following headings: Historic, Fantasy, Sci-Fi and alt-History, along with undefined (reenactors, etc)
According to SLW’s list (some of these may have pulled out, but were in the list):
Historical: 47
Fantasy: 14
Sc-Fi: 22
Alt-History: 13
Undefined: 2
So, the numbers show that there was quite a lot more historical than both sci-fi and fantasy put together. It balances out if you include the alt-history with the latter. Not entirely sure what this proves though… 😀

ParticipantNice video.
I thought the show was better this year than the last couple. It seemed busier, more interesting stuff, and hardly any bare tables due to (presumably) no-shows.
The Sci-Fi/fantasy V historical debate is interesting. Personally, I’m only interested in historical gaming, so the rise and rise of fantasy and Sci-Fi over the last decade or so at Salute has been very noticeable. This year, however, the split seemed to have stabilised.
My impression from this year is that a lot of the ‘big’ games were historical, while a lot of the smaller ‘2×2’-type games were non-historical. Another difference is that a lot of the fantasy-type guys seemed to put a lot more effort into their stands. Nicer display cases, better lighting, better signage etc. Makes them stand out more and maybe creates the impression among some people that the show is skewed more in that direction?
That said, there does seem to have been a lack of the big, stand-out, showstopper games for the last year or two. Don’t get me wrong, there were some really well-presented games of the sort that make you go “ooo, that’s nice!”. But there always used to be one or two that made you go “HOLY CRAP! LOOK AT THAT!”
Or maybe it’s just me…

ParticipantThanks Guys, I get what you mean about the stand Cerdic. There was one historical manufacturer there (who shall not be named) who’s stand has not been updated since I started going to Triples thirty years ago… It’s not a great advertisement for historical gaming really when the fantasy and sci-fi stuff is so up-to-date and more attractive. That said, there were plenty who put loads of effort into their stands (Bad Squiddo, I’m looking at you) and it really showed. it looked very busy around there!

ParticipantHa! I think I know which manufacturer you mean!
Thing is, a trip to B&Q for a few quids worth of strip LEDs and add them to your existing displays isn’t difficult, is it? Would make such a difference!
Agree about Bad Squiddo. Couldn’t get near them all day!
