Here’s a new video AAR from last weekend’s solo Square Bashing game of the 1st July 1916 attack on Serre, Beaumont-Hamel and Thiepval. I hope you enjoy the video, if so, please subscribe to the channel!:

For those that prefer photo AARs to video ones, here is the photo AAR of last week’s solo Square Bashing game. https://www.stormofsteelwargaming.com/2020/04/When-the-Barrage-Lifts.html

I have to agree with Kyoteblue.  I find words and photos easier and faster to comprehend than videos.

I agree.  I am not going to watch a video but will scan narrative with pictures.

Thanks for the feedback, I do put narrative in the videos and explanations of rules, so personally, I feel there is more content in them. Obviously it’s a personal preference, but looking at the stats on Blogger and Youtube and the video AARs have at least three times more views than the photo posts. I know a lot of people watch the videos in snippets and go back to watch a bit more, rather than just sitting down in one session. The photos all came from a live Tweeting session that I did as the game was running, so it’s good for me to put them all in one place anyway, and this will continue for the foreseeable.

Our crew played Square Bashing some years back. We played maybe 5 games and all ended with defender victories. When the Turks attacked they were just shot down in droves, perhaps accurate but not much fun. Our Western Front games all ended with attackers maybe taking one objective. Then one of our players decided he didn’t like the rules. I don’t know, maybe we should try again? The guy who didn’t like the rules has dropped out and we have new members who didn’t see the first games. I do have cotton barrage markers, shell holes and barbed wire…

I am surprised the BEF did as well as yours did.

    This too shall pass

I think you should try it again. Attacking and capturing objectives is difficult, but it’s about weight of numbers. Make sure that the attacking square is packed to maximum occupancy and don’t forget the support squares! Attackers can claim up to three and all you need is one unit in each of them. We find it does take a couple of goes to break the defence and you will take casualties, but it can be done. If units are damaged, swap them out to support squares for battalions still at strength. Unsupported attacks will end in failure every time.
