Wow, Mike thanks man, quite the little brainstorm 😉.
That does seem like a pretty solid solution for the trap detection, coupled with the sneaking rules and a good lock picking thief to help in overcoming the more technical obstacles I think we’ve got the rogue/thieving part settled.
The exploration/dungeon building part I can probably port straight over from Pocket Quest.
Now to decide if I just dig some of my old 15mm foamboard dungeon terrain out of storage or build me some thing conan specific.😎
Also realised, my second favourite kind of Conan stories are the pirate ones
hmm… Ghost Archipelago Conan… Barachan pirates vs zingaran privateers vs Belit with zulu/masai crew… …. my this rabbit hole sure is getting deep isn’t it…

On Mike’s idea that Conan might not be good at lock picking: there is at least a little evidence for this from the tales. In Sprague de Camp’s story “Shadows in the Dark” (is that redundant?) Conan hires an expert thief to pick locks for him, mentioning in passing that he has never been good at that aspect of burglary as his fingers are too thick…Granted, it’s from a pastiche, from the much maligned de Camp – though sometimes I think people are too hard on him (after all, Howard himself is hardly Shakespeare) – but in this case it makes a certain amount of sense, at least to me.
Without wanting to make the rules overly complicated, it might make things interesting if some of Conan’s weaker companions are better at some tasks than the mighty thewed barbarian himself. Lock picking, for instance. Just a thought.16/11/2017 at 21:33 #76369
Found some time today to paint a bunch of archers for the Turanian guards
I don’t know what’s going to be next , might be more minis, might be terrain or I may even try a bit of sculpting.
I’m going to be cleaning up my work station first and then I’ll have a rummage through the old lead pile and see if anything jumps out at me.

Since Michael is doing such a cracking job in bringing the various towns and locations of Hyborya to life for us I thought I’d try my hand at something a little different.
As I said earlier, I really like the stories of Conan as a rogue or pirate so, after seeing Darryl Hunt’s preparations for Ghost Archipelago over on Daxio’s Uneventful Day, I decided to try and build myself some ships.
I’ve already started on the first one, she’s going to be a Turanian navy patrol/pirate hunting ship
Here’s what I’ve got so far,
As you can see still lots to do.
I was a bit hesitant at first as this is the first time I’ve ever built something like this ,but I’ve enjoyed it so far and am fairly confident that I’ll end up with a passable gaming piece in the end.
Well that’s it for now, back to the ship yard with me…

That is a fantastic start dude! Are you using any images as a reference, like the comics, or just pulling it out of your head?

That is poop the bed cool.
I reckon if we had children they would make some great CROM! games… 😀

Great use of materials there! It is foing to be cheap and look really great. I particularly like the bowsprit. How did you do that? It is inspired!

Thanks guys, for this one I’m basically making the same ship Darryl made, just using different materials and sized for 15mm.
I started of printing out the same templates he used just rescaled them a little bit. That being said after the main hull was constructed the rest of the templates no longer fit as I used materials of a different thickness so now I’m just making it up as I go along.
The next one is going to be a sort of pirate sloop and that one will be completely of my own design.

I thought I had included a link in my post above but something seems to have gone wrong.

Stroezie, that is coming along nicely. The look is spot on for the setting. Does this mean one day we might get some photos of naval actions? I live in hope…17/11/2017 at 19:54 #76449
Oh photo’s I can do, its remembering all that happened / taking notes to do a decent AAR that never seems to work for me

Ok folks I’m turning in for the night,
here’s my progress so far,
Still have to do the exterior planking and detail, the masts and (minimal) rigging and finish the rest of the bow.
Don’t know if I’m going to have any more time to work on her this weekend though, maybe sunday, we’ll see.
Cheers and good night,

Not any more time to work on this, and it’s the weekend?!?!! My dear fellow, where are your priorities?
It’s looking just incredible.

Wow! Lots of cool stuff in this thread! I love the eldritch statue.
Where do those little eyeball monsters come from, they look like a brain with an eyeball? They look vaguely familiar, but I can’t quite place them.

If I may add another question: Do you remember what your paint formula was for the blue/turquoise warpaint on the Picts? I’d love to replicate that on my 28’s.19/11/2017 at 11:19 #76544
@ Alex Bates
The eyeball guys are from Lonegunman Games, he’s got a whole range of different 15mm demons, although these are the most original imo.
@ Gone fishing
not really got a formula, just Vallejo marine blue, army painter medium wash and Vallejo azure blue leaving a little of the marine blue visible around the edges.
That’s pretty much it.

She’s nearly finished now, just a few more little details and then it’s on to the painting
I still have to make some fittings to the back to mount a swapable flag and I may still add a crow’s nest if I can make one that doesn’t look to bulky but for the main part she’s done. The sails will be added after she’s been painted.
And then it’s on to the next ship.
Oh lordy me, how do I get myself into these things ?!?

I love when people actually give feedback on any of the pictures I post.
To be honest there’s a few things that didn’t turn out a 100% how I wanted them or what I envisionned when I started, it might well be that your observation gives me the insight I need to correct one of these things so please feel free.

See that’s just what I mean, you are absolutely correct.
They “are” mega long from bow to stern!
It actually bothered me too, only I had nearly convinced myself it wouldn’t really be noticable, thank you for showing me the error of my ways.
I shall set about to rectify the situation(and be much hapier with my own work).

One can almost hear the creak of rigging, the tang of salt on the tongue, the harsh Turanian orders born by wind…and she doesn’t even have a lick of paint yet. Stunning work.20/11/2017 at 20:59 #76644

Stroezie: how long has it taken to make? Do you have all the materials at hand before you start? You clearly have a well stocked model workshop. Or do you?21/11/2017 at 17:36 #76694
almost done painting her, then its time for the sails, I’ll probably do the main sail and fore sail furled and the jib(?) unfurled.
When that’s done I’ll take some proper pictures.
Meanwhile I thought I’d answer some of your questions.
@ Darkest Star Games
Indeed sir, bows and good honest steel, there’s no place in a good Conan adventure for gunpowder weapons.
If I ever do a large war galley I might be tempted to add a catapult or something like that but that will be quite some time yet.
@Alexander & Micheal
no name yet, I’ve been looking at the names of Ottoman ships of the line, current favourites are
White Crowned Eagle
but I’m still open to suggestions, I’d like something with a 1001 nights vibe 🤔
For the pirates I’ll be using historical Tripoly/Barbary pirates.
I have ordered some from the minifigs line sold by Caliver Books and some others from Capitan Games. Some will need a bit of conversion work as they are armed with pistols but that shouldn’t be to difficult.
Go for it!
( and don’t forget to post pictures😎)
my best estimate would be about 4 afternoons but there was some trial and error involved and now and then some interwebs to look things up, the next one will probably go faster, I’ll try to keep a time log when I do that one.
As to the the well stocked model shop well euh…
That’s basically it , my wife does keep me well stocked with left over foamboard, prespecs and magnetic paper leftovers from work and I continually squirrel away interesting looking bits from all over so I guess in that way I am well stocked .
If you like small scale skirmish, check out http://planetares6.blogspot.be/?m=021/11/2017 at 22:45 #76710
Well I said I’d post some pictures didn’t I ?
She doesn’t fit in my lightbox so you’ll have to take the lighting for what it is.
Also, still no name but then I don’t have a sea to launch her in yet either so I’m not worried yet
Ok enough jibber jabber on to the pictures
And with a full complement of Turanian marines on board
Yes a sniper in the crow’s nest
Once I settle on a name it will be painted on the banner which is removable, I’m also going to add another bracket to the top mast so I can add a national flagg that way I can use it for different nations/pirate groups ( We’ve captured the ship, HOIST OUR COLORS ! )
And now I can start planning the next ship…
…and a sea board, some islands, a harbour, sea creatures… Oh look! a white rabbit… … wait mr rabbit don’t go into the hole…
…wait for meeeeeeeeeeeee…..
