Most of us would know the author, Mike Loades, from numerous documentaries & films (where is was the military advisor). Suffice it to say, the man is a passionate exponent on historical weapons; combining research with experimental archaeology.

This book is wonderfully interesting. Each chapter takes an actual sword from an historical period & explores the use of edged weapons in that period in their historical context.

I don’t feel the book is a “binge read”. I’m enjoying it by reading a chapter every few days, whilst reading other books (generally fiction). It pays a careful read to fully understand the technological side. This is not to say the book is dry. It is a combination of history & archaeology with personal anecdote.

It’s a good enough book to hope for a sequel (Mr Loades says there are significant gaps in what is quite a long book).
