    Heavy Brigade

I have been reading Captain Temple Godman’s letters about the Heavy Brigade action at the Battle of Balaclava.  He was serving in the 5th Dragoon Guards at the time.

Godman has lots to tell us and his letters really do illuminate what happened.  So much so that I have written an article on my blog.  Part 1 is now available.

If you are interested in the Crimean War or cavalry actions in general you might enjoy reading what Godman had to say.

[* Edited for accuracy and completeness ].

    Interesting conflict and report.

As a ‘quasi-Napoleonic’ era I was quite taken with it, yet couldn’t find figures.
I have long had an original copy of W H Russells work, publ. 1853 1858, and another copy in two distressed volumes of the war history*, 1857 IIRC! Is actually 1863!

Spirited reading and exceptional details to have been published ‘live’. Of course you can’t beat the film!

    Thanks Dave.

For figures Pendraken in 10mm, Minfigs and Irregular in 15mm and Lancashire in 18mm.  I see a lot of bigger figures for the Crimea too but that is a world I do not know.

Hi again- just corrected my faulty memory, dates off a bit… I was writing in the early morning dark and had to wait for daylight to find them hidden in my library.
Sadly a technical malfunction prevents me from adding photographs of said volumes…
    regards ~d

PS- Of course the film reference is to the Light Brigade charge, not the Heavy!

The second part of my piece on Captain Godman’s letters from Balaclava is now on my blog.

It explores why there was such a disparity of casualties between the British and Russians.

If it is of interest here is the link.
