Always been a Lovecraft fan, so seemed reasonable to start a town based on Arkham – ‘The Newhaven universe is an alternate reality. It is more-or-less Lovecraftian and loosely based somewhere from the 1920s to the early 50s, the culture being a mix of both the US and the UK. However, other pantheons and monsters are well represented.

The port of Newhaven is based on a simplified version of a map of Arkham. In 28mm, Arkham itself would have been a bit much. It is on the Miskatonic River and includes one campus of the Misakatonic University. It is not certain whether it is the same Miskatonic described by Lovecraft, probably not. There are many different universes in many different dimensions. Some of these different universes, etc, are actively studied – both officially and unofficially – by the university. This can have consequences.’

The map it’s loosely based on is this one: https://easterngarrison.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/newhaven-update-september-2016.html

The town itself is far from complete. Most of the buildings are either Sarissa or TTCombat and are generally unpainted – the few exceptions are in muted tones and only when it’s really, really necessary. Still lots more to do – the intention is to restart building work in July.

https://easterngarrison.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/newhaven-update-september-2016.html shows how work ended last year.

Being Lovecraft-based, some sort of naval presence is needed – here, I’ve designed and built a class of small inshore boats that I’ve decided would possibly have been developed had the authorities felt the need to cater for future ‘incursions’ – as in the actions on a certain reef…

‘Gentlemen, I’ve called this meeting because it has been brought to our attention that there is a serious weakness in our coastal defences. To overcome this weakness a new series of coastal patrol boats has been commissioned. There will be three variants. These are an anti-submarine vessel, hull numbers assigned 21-29, a torpedo boat, numbers 31-39, and a gunboat numbers 41-49. It is proposed that, at some point in the future, more vessels will be commissioned if the threat develops.’

‘Sir, if the threat includes submarines, then surely we will also need squadrons of minesweepers?’

‘Ah yes, the threat. Now, as to the exact nature of the threat…’

The templates for the patrol boats are based on my ‘tealight ironclad’  designs (see MWWB366, Tealight Ironclads) https://easterngarrison.blogspot.co.uk/2016/06/the-fleets-in-town.html

I’m also in the process of sorting my own rules but don’t know how far I’ll get on that one!

That’s a great setup, a good representation on the tabletop. I must confess I am a Lovecraft fan myself so I’ll follow this with great interest! 🙂

Probably be a month or so before I get round to doing much with it – quite simply, it tends to take a time to set up so is there for a while. Trouble is, it’s the same space I need for Ancients battles and casting! At the moment I’m doig casting and it’s going a lot slower than I intended.

That’s a very attractive set-up – towns offer so many possibilities for good games. In a future update, I’d love to see some of your protagonists and their mythos opponents.

A good bunch of would be investigators, and more than a few beasties and horros to tangle with!
