Compass Games has just released an updated version of the old Frank Chadwick design, and I just picked this up on sale (the only way I could justify it, and I blew my budget for the rest of the year on it). This is a game that came deep from the recesses of my youth, and goes a long way to explaining my obsession with the Cold War and the potential ins and outs of nuclear conflict – I’ve read “On Thermonuclear War” by Hermann Kahn at least five times, for my sins. The new edition of TWW is really beautiful and well assembled, an aesthetically lovely collection. I’m currently trimming counters and rereading the rules getting ready for the introductory Germany scenario.

The map of Germany has gotten a nice graphical upgrade. Forgive the sideways photos, I’m on my phone on a lunch break and the website forces it to go landscape for some reason.

The new counters are a real graphical upgrade, way easier to read and better organized, and just all around nicer to look at.

And just some of the heavy handful of player aid cards. There are a LOT of them.

A blast from the past and a really nice set overall!

Isn’t it great when these blasts from the past get a facelift?  Really does look lovely.

A buddy of mine has told me that there is a “beatified and updated” version of the AH game “Blitzkreieg: Red vs Blue” coming out.  Perhaps uniquely this one is supposed to have the maps upsized with larger hexes to use larger counters more easily read by old eyes.  This game, and The Russian Campaign are what I cut my teeth on so I hope it’s true.

You know you’re now going to have to play a game or 3 and post AARs, right?  Maybe do some battles in 3mm?  😀

A new version of Blitzkrieg? Oh my, yes! I’d be all over that. Krasnynorad vs. Azurnerreich… I always used the atom bomb rules.

And as for AARs, I’m on board! Once I stop falling asleep at the end of the day instead of gaming, I’m on it! Counter trays for organizing all this lovely loot are arriving in the mail today so I’m hoping to get out of work early enough to spend a little time on it tonight.

I did a fan upgrade for Blitzkrieg back in 2015 for the fiftieth anniversary of the game. New map graphics and counters. It is on Boardgame Geek and also the Blitzkrieg Facebook Page.

We get slapped around, but we have a good time!

I know nothing about the original version of TWW, I was strictly a SPI person in my youth.  However, I read some reviews of this updated game and decided that I had to have it.  The recent fall in the value of the Pound has made this seem like a wise move.

So it’s currently sat on a shelf in my ‘den’, alongside (probably) thousands of pounds worth of other stuff that I’ll never get round to making/painting/punching out or playing.  But at least I have it 🤔

I know the feeling but open it up, seriously. It’s a beautiful game with enormous aesthetic appeal. I bought an actual glass frame to put the map in, it just felt worth it to actually play it under glass.

Oh I have opened it, and marvelled at the contents.  I’m planning ahead for when my current gaming group is too old (or worse) to travel to my house to play.  I’ll then be playing solo for the rest of my life, and that’s when these monster games will come into their own.  War in the East (2nd Edition) keeps looking at me!
