Does anyone have any recommendations for boardgames that do a good job of representing the 30 Years War?  I like using boardgames as “campaign engines” for miniature wargames campaigns, if that helps as a focus.

Do a search on Board Game Geek for some possible answers.  Personally, I would stick to games with area movement or games that have a high strategic focus and thus a small map with fewer hexes.

The only TYW boardgame I can vaguely remember was SPIs ‘A Mighty Fortress’. A bit of a beast but supposedly playable in a single session.

    BGG entry here. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2666/mighty-fortress

Evidently it was republished in 2011.

‘Won by the Sword’ or ‘Europe in Agony’, both by GMT might do it..

‘A Mighty Fortress’ games the 16th century wars of religion, not the TYW. Or at least my copy did 🙂

The title came from a hymn by Martin Luther,  ‘A Mighty Fortress is Our God’

That hymn is that old?!  Still sung on occasion at my church!

Apparently it does have a connection to the TYW. The Swedes adopted it.

Missed off that Album but released as a B side to their follow up hit to Waterloo:

Breitenfeld:  from the Swedish version of the Album ‘Waterloo’ 1974

    great song, somewhat derivative lyrics.

Mighty Fortress is the wrong period and, IMHO, inappropriate for your intentions.

is the first clearly identifiable game that might fit but only identified through a Thirty Years War search in the BGG catalogue; no doubt there are others that do not have TYW in their title but you would have searched BGG already.  I am watching with interest.

is a TYW game without the period in the title; described as an excellent game it only covers one year of the war.

The best one that I’ve found when we did a campaign was Wallenstein:

Wallenstein is fun.  Not much in the way of simulation, though.

    Someone’s got me on ignore

And if Farrish keeps on with the ersatz ABBA lyrics he’ll suffer a similar fate 😉

‘The Wargamer’ #33  (Sept, ’84) contained ‘Holy Roman Empire’. I don’t know if it’s a good representation–having never played it. But it intrigued me enough for me to keep it all these years. Might be worth looking into.

You know, I wouldn’t blame you, I’m going to ignore myself if that sort of thing flashes through my mind again, cos

I think there is the makings of a Thirty Years War musical here.
