ParticipantI voted yes. It allows you to acknowledge a post without the need to actually post a response. I use it quite a lot on another forum.

ParticipantYes, a worthwhile feature, though I am guessing many visitors pass by without logging on, so neither comment or would be able to like.

Participant“Like” this idea!

ParticipantI think this would be a nice feature too

ParticipantI voted no because I can’t really see the point in a ‘like’ feature. If you like a post why not take the trouble to tell the poster that you like it? You could even go crazy and tell him why you like it. You never know, you might even end up having a conversation.
I don’t like ‘likes’.
In fact, I hate, loathe and despise them.
And do we really want a league table of the most liked posts (which will inevitably become a league table of the most liked posters)?

I am inclined to agree, which is odd when you consider who proposed the idea.

ParticipantIf you do make it like facebook, then dont forget to have pictures of you at th doctors or dentists.

ParticipantI went with yes, but only to the first half of the question. Also, does it have to be “like”? That’s very Facebook. What about a “+1” or a “Thumbs Up” instead?

Depends on what the off the shelf packages allow, there are a few.
Some seem to vary between like and thumbs up and thanks…
Depends on price too!😉

Sometimes I don’t reply to posts because I don’t really have much to say, and posting just to say I like it seems pointless. On other forums, people have been accused of posting such things just to increase their post count, which makes me even more wary of posting just to say “I agree”.
I would be interested to hear why other people have voted no, though.

I hadn’t really noticed that part of the question. Personally, I don’t see the value of a list of most liked posts, but I wouldn’t strongly object to one, either.

If one that uses “Like” suits in every other way, it might be possible to edit the code to change it to “Thanks” or whatever. I’d be happy to take a look, but make no guarantees that I’d be able to do it 😉 Send me a PM with details of which ones you’re looking at and I’ll let you know if I think it’s feasible.

ParticipantI am not bothered either way but I would prefer visitors to comment, when someone takes the time and effort to post photo’s, link or comment it’s polite if you like the photo’s, link or comment to reply.
Why not have number of visit’s on each post displayed, that would give the person posting and the person looking an idea of the number of people who are interested in the topic. Just a thought.

Hi Russell,
I do know what you mean about not always replying to posts because it is sometimes hard to think of anything worthwhile to say. I often admire the pictures of newly-painted figures that people post but I rarely say anything because just writing “good job” seems a bit pointless. And I suppose being able to press ‘like’ would allow people to give some kind of feedback in these instances. However, it wouldn’t be possible to restrict it to this kind of usage and soon you will find that when a discussion/argument starts people will start ‘liking’ posts by people they agree with. And then things start to get pretty stupid very quickly.

ParticipantI’m not fussed either way. It is not a feature I would use myself, though.

ParticipantIt provides another channel of communications that is generally positive (although I’m sure we will see “Like”-battles when there are clearcut arguments). I dislike long threads that are nothing but “I agrees” or “nice work!”. At the same time when you say something and there is silence you are never sure it’s because there’s nothing more to say or because no one cares. It is useful to know the difference!
So did Editor Mike and Angel Barracks cancel out each other’s vote??
13/02/2015 at 19:16 #17534Spurious
ParticipantNot a fan of them, they don’t really add anything of value or further discussion. It’s the equivalent of just going ‘lol’ in reply to anything.
A thread view count would serve as a better gauge of interest/validation for the author without the problem of someone feeling/being marginalized in a discussion for not having enough likes on their posts despite making good points (which happens a whole lot).
