Uniform question

While I await delivery of the “Bloody Big Battles” rules I am l looking at a family of rules sets called “1859” (includes rules for the Second Schleswig War in 1864,) “1866,” and “1870.”

My key question is did the uniforms (this likely will be in 6mm sized figures, though 15mm is a second choice,) of Prussia, Austria, Sardinia, and Denmark – especially Austria and Prussia – change significantly during this time line?

In 6mm I would think you would have no issues using the same figures throughout this period. There are some changes with the Austrian kit but really not noticeable in 6mm, and heck even 15mm wouldn’t be much of a stretch. Mostly cut of coat if I remember correctly. The Italians are in the same boat, coat to coatee I think, but again, in the smaller scale completely not an issue.

At 6mm Prussian Uniforms did not experience much change between 1866 and 1870. However the Austrians in 1864/1866 were more likely to be in greatcoats , while in 1859 they were in the white kittel.

The Sardinian Army of 1859 also had significant changes in uniforms in 1866 (again mostly the use of greatcoats etc).

Danes only are relevant in 1864. But their uniforms did not change at 6mm as far as 1915.

So your 1864/1866 Austrians should predominately be in great-coats (also there were changes in the uniforms of the cavalry)

The Sardinians/Italians in 1866 are also in greatcoat.

Danes are the same 1864- almost 1915 for infantry.

Prussians should be fine.

French do see uniform changes between 1859 and 1870.

as a note for Danes, I’d feel no issue at all using ACW Union infantry in greatcoats for 1864 🙂
