I recently read America’s Wars and it had the following statistical snippet, which I thought might be of interest to some:
Lethality rate of Small Arms: 0.39, i.e. 2.56 WIA/1 KIA
Lethality rate of Grenades / Mortars / Mines: 0.13/0.12/0.11 i.e. 7.69 WIA/1 KIA; 8.33 WIA/1 KIA; 9.09 WIA/1 KIA
The overall WIA/KIA rate for Vietnam was 6.71:1, as compared to 9.34:1 for Iraq (the difference being driven by a mixture of more IED casualties, more body armour & better medical care)
Interesting. The last set of stats I had seen had grenades as even less lethal than on this list, but mortars up higher. I’m betting that this set is more recent, as in the last 10 years there has been a much more extensive amount of research into Vietnam.

Hi DSG,
The figures quoted are for the Vietnam War. I expect that the figures would be different against forces using bigger mortars.
