Daubing some paint on a pair of old Ral Partha sorcerers busy throwing spells at one another, I wondered if there are any rules (or other form of game) where quarreling wizards duel with magic? My first thought was that the excellent Frostgrave involves a fair amount of this, in the context of a larger adventure of icy plundering, but is there something more specific?

I do all my own stunts.

The old Metagaming games Melee and Wizard would suit nicely.

I think there was a set of updated fan rules kicking around the net but I cannot find them quickly. Might be worth a search or a look at the BGG page for the games.

You could also try something like Wiz War. The rules used to be online, but I don’t know if they still are, and Hirst Arts had details of using their moulds to cast the boards. Looked good.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

There was a successfully funded Kickstarter project for a game like this a month back: LINK. Looks fairly setting-specific, though.

Also, Iron Wind Metals sells some kind of miniature-board game hybrid about duelling wizards made for 54mm, but it seems you have to buy the whole starter set to get the rules and cards, and anyway, I’ve never heard anyone talk about it and I for one tend to be a bit leery of games no one ever talks about: LINK.

I seem to recall that Broadsword Adventures had some rules for wizard-vs-wizard “mind duels”, but that might be the opposite of what you’re looking for, given that it’s not about spellcasting but rather “telepathic combat” based on opposed die rolls. Presumably inspired by a scene from the Conan the Destroyer movie.

I’m sure there are some boardgames based on these themes as well. Wasn’t one of the earliest fantasy boardgames (from the late 70s or early 80s) about wizards duelling in an arena by summoning various magical creatures to attack each other? I don’t recall its name and Boardgamegeek is a bit difficult to browse for old games, so I can’t really provide any more information about it.

Frostgrave= Wizard + apprentice + warband of ‘soldiers’. Total of 10-11 figures a side plus a few wandering monsters.
