ParticipantVaguely thinking of getting myself a WW1 and WW2 boardgame for tactical fleet actions – any recommendations?

ParticipantIt’s a damn shame that Victory Games never ported over their ‘Fleet’ series to WWII.
If you want a solo game VG’s ‘Carrier’ and Tokyo Express are worth looking for. Long OOP of course. Ditto Avalon Hill’s Flat Top, insanely detailed and ideally needs teams of players.
The only in print games I know are Avalanche’s Second World War at Sea series.

Any opinions on these? Specifically I am interested in the (I assume) yet to be released Second World War at Sea: La Regia Marina. Seems to be a rerelease/update of Second World War at Sea: Bomb Alley. Thank you.

ParticipantI always liked SPIs “Dreadnought”. The entire SPI back catalogue is available to to download and print out or convert to PowerPoint , although for naval games you only need the ship counters.

La Regia Marina is indeed an updated and expanded version of Bomb Alley.
This is a play through of the introductory game, Coral Sea. It explains the system better than I can 🙂

I gather CA is also very good, but I’ve not played that.

Watched almost all of it. Game, system and publisher lost me where you had to buy multiple titles to get enough for the scenarios covered in one game, almost all titles were out of stock and the publisher is next to useless for any help. Looking elsewhere.

ParticipantQuarterdeck Games, as their name implies, specialise in naval games, with a bit more crunchiness to them than SPI’s “CA” or “Dreadnought”.

I enjoyed playing “Destroyer Captain”, but have to say that otherwise I haven’t met any boardgames that think have done a partcularly good job of 20th century tactical naval combat.
All the best,
John.
