EPIC, (original) 5mm infantry with 1/200th vehicles.

new epic, nothing that matches anything else deliberately.

standard 40k, (before the new megamrines things) were 32mm infantry, 1/48th vehicles all carrying 1/25th sized weapons.

if you can just stright and right angles, an easy way to add depth to the squares is glue the mdf to 6mm (or 10mm or even 20mm) foam core board, Use the mdf side for level areas and the card side to dig in trenchs and shell holes, rivers etcs…

The key, is making each army play and feel different and thematic (and different builds within each army doing the same). Quick and Easy too often ends up with everything tasting vanilla after a while.

I did paint other things in between, but I wanted to enjoy the process rather than feeling it is a chore. They do look great now they are done.

Will have a look at the rules. The tanks look good but are huge compared to the old ones, might go well with dropfreet commander stuff though.

Multipart infantry in this scale is bad, the box losing about 1/3rd of its original planned contents but them not rewriting the info in the box is bad. It just feels rushed or an afterthought.

As I said earlier, not my scale I have shedloads of real Epic, Vanguard and oand GZG stuff, and ebay is my friend when I want more.

Yes, it has long been known that retention s not really their strategy, so a constant churn of new.

And because they laughably design competition rules/codex, and then constantly nerfing the bad best armies and promoting slow sellers by rules tweaks. Rather than fixing a universal rule and codex (like say other competative games do).

sortof, the New epic are massive compared to the old, and look to be 12mm sized vehicles, with 9mm infantry.

It looks like they took all the good bits out of the original and binned them.

card driven systems are often good for this, but I do not know a plug in game engine to do it yet.

Some of it is based on my experience, I am fortunate in having a table in a bay window, so it sits on a back corner with little wasted space behind. But it means vertical ones on a wall are no use to me!

Hence the enquiry for others to see what they want/need/use in paint racks.

A version with a retaining rail, but no dividers is a good idea, helps with none standard sized paint pots, the odd tube or square Ink bottle as well.

test of the current design, made in card (laser cutting and ply are expensive) while I iron out kinks.

The colours aee red for Vallejho/Coat D’arms type bottles and green for GW sized ones.

The idea is to have each level self contained so you can swap them up or down etc.

Cat not included in final product.

The ones I am planning ( and getting feetback before finalising) will be cut in ply not MDF, and the circular design makes them pretty stable on a flat surface, especially if you use a glass lazy susan turntable.

What I never liked with perspex and mdf racks in tiers was the amount of table footprint they took up, hence circular on a turntable to try and minimise footprint and maximise storage.

And if you wanted even more colour, You can leverage in a French Foreign Legion, as well as Swiss mercenaries and Landsnekti for the Holy Rollers….

And of course the Duke of Lancaster might hire some Scottish mercenaries to balance this….

And the Dragon Phalanx’s of the Tudors….

The FW190 was supurb at low level but merely great at higher ones. Merlins/Griffons good engines low, but had altitude advantage over just about anyone elses.

If you poke around online, there is a Middle Earth adaption of Warmaster.

Base sizes can be played with a bit, as long as they are all the same size, and you adjust distances.

However you ‘might’ be better with Warmaster Ancient Battles as your base, with the classical and medieval army lists.

Hordes will give a good game, but less adjustable for the Middle Earth feel.

If you want to go big battle, Too the Strongest would work well.

If you like TooFatLardies stuff, there is also an internet adaption of their Dux Brittanicus Rules that work well, called world of ARda.

If you can find it there is also the GW Battle of 5 Armies ruleset from the boxed game they did.

Me a Middle Earth junkie…. Nooooo, I can give it up whenever I like….

One of the things about the ‘youth’ of Napoleon and his commanders is that in 1805 at 36, he was more battlefield and campaign experienced than just about any opponent, even if they were creer soldiers and 70. Same is true of all his Officers (that survived) it was a hard school.

I abide by the principle that, if I am using their figures, they can pick the rules.

That might be the way, have a few games with them and see how you go. However beware of the…. Oh I forgot to tell you this rule….. types.

There is a happy middle ground in DBA DBM/MM, use some of the extra troops types from the latter, to open up options in the former.

Also Hordes of the Things, even ignoring magic and Monsters is better, giving you the really useful Horde unit type.

Also is element based is their cup of tea, Warmaster Ancients gives a decent game.

Odd on the torpedo rules, as turning away from them was for a reason, to lower the speed the hit happened at, if it happened, a torp hitting a ship  with both running head on, can be effectively hitting at a speed of 50 knots, instead of 10 knots if turned away.

One of the other frustrations most wargamers have is that an exceptional gunnery ship, has a hit ratio of 5% at her best, in good conditions and a calm sea…..

Even huge ships are very very small targets at normal opening engagement ranges. Part of the reason the Bismarks hit on the Hood is such an oddity.

Cannot comment on odd deaths by Mortars, but dad a Navy man recounted once an oddity at sea. On a destroyer and in action, afterwards 2 missing crew were found dead in a forward compartment that had been hit. Neither had a visible mark, and the MO, had a poke (Drs are like that when they have time ans the skipper wanted to rule out vapour or gas death(a build up of explosivepoisonous gases on a small ship in a confined space, was/is not a good thing so he wanted to check structural issues.)). One had totally collapsed lungs, the other had internal organs scambled.

No idea could be found that explained the injuries, except perhaps sudden decompression of the area on them.

Dad was posted on shortly afterwards (upgraded to a cruiser as he put it) so never heard if the Dr had come to any further conclusions.

Another thought that might appeal is to use the ACWs as troops of the Confederated Union, and for their opposition use the forthcoming Waterloo figures as their enemies.

Bit like the Texas war of independence.

look at uniforms like the franco prussian war, crimean war, 7 weeks war and the danish war of 1864 for alternate uniform ideas.

red coats vs greencoats can be fun.
