I prefer rage zombies over the shambling ones. They’re scarier.

They don’t have to have any special mutations for me, either. Just a mouth full of teeth and no fear.

I can’t see myself playing with something as small as 3mm. When you step back from the table, you can’t really tell what is what. I play a little 6mm for modern warfare and sci-fi, where masses of vehicles are common, but about 90% of my gaming is with 28mm.

I don’t know how big you want to make this, but it would be a great opportunity to showcase your products. Looking at your stuff with that in mind, I’m thinking maybe a big ghetto made with Junker and Badland terrain, with RDF troops patrolling, searching for rebels.

When I was a kid, my dad took me to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, and there was a gigantic diorama of the D-Day landing made with those Airfix 1/72 scale plastic soldiers. What I noticed was that it wasn’t just one single scene, but rather a lot of little scenes all put together, if you know what I mean. In one little spot, you could see troops escorting prisoners, in another spot, wounded men were being tended to, in another spot was vicious battle and so on. All of those little scenes held your attention, and I think that is the secret to having a big diorama. In 6mm, you certainly have an opportunity to put a lot of activity into whatever you decide to depict.

How about simply “20th Century”? This would cover all the conflicts and they were all more or less similar types of warfare. I play RCW and that, like other wars from that period, doesn’t easily fit into some of the usual categories.

In my group, historical gaming reigns supreme, with sci-fi a distant second. I see very little fantasy gaming around here. But this is speaking only of my own club and I’m aware that there are others nearby.

My own list for the last 12 months, owned and played, in order of most to least.

    Dark Ages – 28mm

Bronze Age (called “biblical” by some) – 28mm

    Mexican-American War – 28mm

    Russian Civil War – 28mm

    Sci-fi Skirmish – 28mm

    Modern company-level – 15mm

I really enjoy Ken Burns’ documentaries, and I’ve found they are good to paint with since they rely on dialogue and archive photos rather than film. The most recent one I saw was about the Roosevelts (you might still find this one playing on PBS). I also found his series on Prohibition fascinating in the detail it went into describing the US in the early 20th Century and how things even got to the point of prohibiting alcohol.

Of course, his series’ on the ACW and WWII were good too and I think both of them are on Netflix.

This may be a symptom of growing older, or just much busier, but simplicity has become a greater selling point for me. I don’t want to spend a lot of time looking up some obscure rule point or exception and I don’t want to plow through chart after chart to resolve a charge. These days, I gravitate more toward rules that I can essentially carry around in my head. Hail Caesar, I think, does a nice job of walking that tightrope between complexity and simplicity. The rules are very easy memorize but are still able to give character to your units – as much or as little as you want.

That desire of mine for simplicity has lately extended to basing. I’ve become a convert to the Impetus style of basing units on a single stand. I’ll admit that a big factor for me is the aesthetic quality of it, but it’s also practical. I started doing that for Dux Bellorum, putting each unit on a 120mm x 80mm base. It works for DB, it works for Impetus, and I can easily make it work for HC. My feeling is that the the formation of the unit is less important to the general. All he cares about is putting the unit in the right place. It’s the captain’s job to line all the boys up, and the unit would naturally adopt whatever formation is suitable for the situation and the troop type.

This sounds fun. I really need to get back playing modern African wars. I’ve got two African armies and two middle eastern armies, but I haven’t played a game with them in at least two years. Thinking of going this route to do Central American wars of the 1980s, but Hell, I’ve been talking about that for years.

I do happen to like Peter Pig’s stuff. Sorry to hear the guy was rude to you.

I’ve got mostly ancient/dark age (28mm), as well as Mexican-American War (28mm), Russian Civil War (28mm) and some modern/near future (15mm and 28mm). Still a wide footprint, but I’ve managed to divest myself of a lot of unfinished periods and scales.

I used to try to have something in all genres and scales. I didn’t realize I was doing it, I just bought whatever caught my eye.

Eventually, I realized I can’t have all of it, and I get more enjoyment from having a complete, well-painted set from a few periods than an incomplete, unpainted pile of lead comprising dozens of periods. I guess you could call that focus.

Hi Alan, I’ve only played AK-47 with multiple-based figures, but I can’t think of one reason why you couldn’t do it with individual figures. It really won’t change anything in the game either way.

AK-47 has been my go-to rule book for almost any kind of modern, irregular warfare. It’s simple, versatile, and it takes well to modifications or house rules. That being said, I’m looking forward to trying out Warfare in the Age of Madness, which a friend recently bought. You may want to consider those rules as well.

You really have to do it that way, with the lower command ratings of the Soviet-bloc commanders and Rigid Doctrine rule. I also like to use the Fixed Formation rule, although that one’s optional.

I generally prefer my Post-Apocalyptic world to be without zombies, aliens and weird mutants. I like a world where there is a breakdown in order, similar to what you see in some countries now, with small groups of survivors banding together and the remnants of military units after some catastrophe.

There was a show I liked called Jericho (not sure if that ever showed outside the US) that focused on a small town after a nuclear attack. They had little contact with the rest of the world due to a massive EMP attack. It was kinda cheesy in parts, but I liked how they fought wars with neighboring small towns over resources and with the forces of a rebel government trying to establish control over the area. It gave me a lot of gaming inspiration.

A few years ago, a friend and I put together some forces for a hypothetical conflict between Colombia and Venezuela. The Colombians have some very well-trained airmobile units, but it’s built for COIN and not for fighting external forces. They have a lot of American stuff and some cool Brazilian vehicles. The Venezuelans have a bigger conscript army, and they’ve gone heavily into tanks. I seem to remember a very eclectic mix of different vehicles, but they have a significant amount of French stuff.

    I have that harpist, a great figure…

    Very nice job on those!

I like the harpist too. He makes a nice change of pace from the usual trumpeters or drummers. I imagine his role in the unit is to just stay close to the king and sing calming, confidence-building songs about how wonderful the king is.
