Very interesting.  I started down this route for WW2 using 1/72-1/76.  At the end I had similar forces of infantry, mortars, A/T guns and tanks plus an aircraft for all the major combatant powers based on Neil Thomas’ rules. I didn’t pay any attention to base sizes, simply using what fitted the number of figures involved in each unit.  This is a typical one:

    http://cameronian-onlyagame.blogspot.com/2017/05/8th-army-completed.html

Needless to say I didn’t get around to rules, table sizes (although 3×3 was always the aim), etc. which would have allowed play but at least I got around to the armies.  More power to you sir, interested to hear more.

Zippy; all good thoughts and I appreciate it.  I’d rather give it all away to people who would appreciate the stuff.  All the figures and kits already appear on blogs.  An idea I did have was contacting wargames clubs in the area to see if they wanted them. See what gets enabled I guess.

Thanks Dave.  I must admit it was a type completely unknown to me, it and it’s Roc partner.

What to do with them is a puzzler.  Some months from now my entire collection, armies and all wargaming accoutrements, kits, built and unbuilt, books, paints and materials will all have to go.  None of it is of any interest to family or friends and I can’t transport it.  What to do?

Quite correct.  The model is a DIII which didn’t appear until 1918, so may be a bit late for some tastes; the kit was in my stash, so used it.

Something worth looking at for soloing is the Command and Colours system, which is entirely card based for ‘orders’ but any rule set can be used with it for movement, etc.

Agree, HaT was my one stop shop for a while.  Recently they seem to be stuck churning out a narrow range of figures and developing others that are already available elsewhere. A shame considering how many of their existing ranges are still incomplete after many years.

Us plastic 1/72’ers tend to be viewed as a bit strange by the ‘mainstream’ gaming fraternity but I’m perfectly happy; as I’ve still got money left for beer after putting an army together

Soloist here, so I can play as fast and loose with the rules as I like

They’re based for HOTT (Hordes of the Things) fantasy rules, with a couple of rules tweaks, e.g. Camel Corps and the Gardner gun.  I settled on HOTT due to the disparity in the weapons used between the Brits and the Mahdists, who were basically a medieval army with a few firearms thrown in.  HOTT caters nicely for the disparities. Additionally as HOTT is points based I wouldn’t need to paint boxes and boxes of Mahdists.

Only how I see it of course.

    Appreciate the interest.

Appreciated.  The idea was to have machines rather than figures, didn’t quite end up that way; the bases looked to bare without the little devils.

Pretend for whatever reason, you could only embark on one C19th Colonial campaign project. One only. What’s it to be? Zulus? The NW Frontier? The Sudan? The Foreign Legion in North Africa? Something more esoteric? Please include reasons or your choice whether it be a particularly tasty figure range, you have a yen to do a specific terrain type, a rule set that lends itself particularly to this conflict, a boyhood love of an inspirational film: whatever. donald

Sudan – specifically the Gordon Relief Expedition. HaT Camel Corps, Naval guns and artillery, Esci and Waterloo infantry sets (the latter as it contains mounted officers and Egyptian troops). This force operated in two separate parts, so numbers are reasonable and you can choose camels or highlanders.  Gaps can be filled from Newline 20mm ranges.

Terrain is desert, dunes and oasises.

Watch ‘Khartoum’, Charleton Heston and Laurence Olivier.

Did a desert column force organized for HOTT rules.  Haven’t got around to the Mahdists yet (HaT infantry and Newline cavalry).

Not surprised by it.  There is generally a poor quality of research these days.  Likely younger generations tasked with researching ‘ancient history’ which has little relevance to them or interest for them.  Not a criticism, merely the way of the world.

I commend to you ‘Celtic Warfare 1595 – 1763, by James Michael Hill.  Discusses the charge at length in several instances.  The author reckons that the Southern Confederates were imbued by the spirit of it, being descended in a lot of cases from immigrant Celts.

Irregular Wars rules give highlanders +2 in their melee rolls to reflect the impact of a charge and class them as ‘wild’ so don’t suffer movement or melee penalties in rough terrain.  Seems reasonable but personally I’d only give it for intial contact, if the charge didn’t break the enemy then the Highlanders were in trouble.

To me a teuchter is anyone born north of Milngavie

I love 1/144 models. Mine are in desert colours, which means I had to hand paint shark mouths on my P40s and a snake on a Ju87. Well, you have to, don’t you? although I’m not brave enough to leave the canopies clear!

Agree, there’s just something about the little guys.  The canopies are the absolutely last things to be fitted to avoid sticky fingers, etc.  I believe that pilot figures are available in the appropriate scale, though I haven’t chased this down.

I’ve got two left in the stash, a Messerschmit 110 and a Hurricane; the Hurri would be number three as I’ve done one for early war and one for the desert.  So if it gets done it’ll likely be partnered with the ‘Spit.

Two very nice planes. Do you know who’s planes they were? Are they based on anyone in particular?

I seem to remember the info was on the instruction sheets but I didn’t pay much attention to it.

However a bit of searching found out:

Spitfire of No 19 squadron RAF Fowlmere Sept-Oct 1940, flown by Sergeant Jennings.

Tempest from 222 Squadron which converted from Spitfires in December 1944; the squadron flew Tempests until converting onto Gloster Meteors.

I’m working up the courage for air combat but I’ll need to expand the air fleet. The Tempest is for ground support but nothing for it to support as I’ve nothing in the European theatre after 1940 battle of France.  10mm Panzer Lehr might happen yet.  Too many bees buzzing around in the bonnet as usual.

I bought one of their 100 piece packs at a discount price, I was even able to specify which poses I wanted.  The gaps I filled in using figures from Perry.  The gun from Warrior’s Mexican-American war range is a nice little model though nearer a 4pdr than a 6pdr in size I reckon.

In this case the Zvezda ones were used because the mortars in the Italeri set were not up to much.  Likewise not sufficient command figures so Zvezda will make another appearance as company command.

Nice touch in the Italeri though having female radio ops as the women played such a significant part in the operations of the Red Army.
