Thanks for the answers!  Hope you get those technical issues worked out, I’d think pre-colored and pre-cut at this affordable level would do quite well.

BTRs look cool, but just don’t have the protection and combat ability of the BMP, and often people try to use the BTR like an IFV rather than an APC, leading to high loses.

Silly questions for you Ali:  1. How well does the cardstock take paint?  (I am worried about de-lamination of the layers if it gets too “wet”).  2. Would it be possible for you to have these be pre-colored as well as pre-cut?

I think it helps give it a worn/aged cast concrete look, really works with the paint job you gave it.  On a space ship though, I’d think the lines would be a major distraction.

Hey that’s pretty nifty!  End result looks pretty darn good.

There are now products on the market that can be used to fill the print lines, and some that even slightly “melt” them depending upon material. I have found that higher end prints, though more expensive, are a lot less work to get looking good.

Seems like an excellent way to go.

Thinking on scenario books… might be cool to do something like have 8 scenarios, but linked in a branching fashion so you might play all 8, or maybe only 4 or 6 depending upon the outcomes of the previous scenario.  Maybe include a flow chart.  For ease of player organizing there could be a part of the front end that say “to play these scenarios the miniatures you will need are: 1 hero (player), 2 possible henchmen (player), 6 bandits with hand weapons, 4 bandits with bows, 1 giant sand viper, 3 large scorpions, 1 sorcerer and 1 Bandit Chief” and then sell the figures in a special scenario pack!

Ok, that made me laugh hard.  Not very accurate “old westisms” but funny none the less.

So where’s the rest?  Did the Pregnant Lady save the day and strangle ole Smelly with her pettycoat?  Did the cav ride to the rescue 2 days too late?  Did the reds bury Doc up to his neck, smear his head with blueberry jam, then turn loose their western prairie weinner dogs to lick him to death? Must have closure!!!

Standard window frames and shutters and doors are a great thing to have!  Wall mounted torches and sconces, yes!  Skulls on spears… I honestly wouldn’t use them much, but I can see them being very useful for tribal village decoration, boundary marking, warning markers, etc.  A separate pack of 6 or 8 might be a good seller.

US forces in Vietnam suffered a skills gap with the 12 month tour system, constantly replacing experienced troops with FNG’s, unit rotation would probably have increased performance in the jungle rather than watering down the skill set.

The US also suffered from command directives that did not take the reality on the ground into account, forcing units to move through jungle as quickly as possible causing much noise due to hacking at the green, rather than allowing them to move at the pace the jungle requires.

So lets bust a falsity right here.  Make no mistake, the US had some great jungle fighting units in Vietnam, though most were recon units (like SOG, Sigma/Omega/Delta, USMC Stingray, ASAS, etc).  The Mobile Guerrilla Force was probably the best of all “regular” sized formations at jungle fighting, but the ARVN had some Ranger companies that were also exceptional.  The Montagnards/CIDG, though excellent in the jungles they were born to, were not “the best” jungle fighters because they lacked a military tradition and experience which would sometimes lead them to be only as effective as green regular units, though also generally much more courageous due to this lack.

The NVA were not that great at jungle fighting.  They had excellent camouflage discipline for the most part, but the jungle was not their friend, and they suffered massive casualties just from the environment.  They also did not own the night, as they were just as afraid to move around at night as the FWF if there was enemy in their area.

I could really rant on, but I will stop short of getting loose…

Back to the question of WW2, I’d have to say the Gurhka would be the best jungle fighters.  They were indeed born to the environment, brave to a fault, extremely effective, and feared by the enemy.

Is a good soldier a good soldier no matter where he fights?

That could be a “yes, but…” question.  It’s not just a question of fighting ability, but conditioning and preparation for living in the environment.  A unit that is given extensive jungle training will obviously fare better when introduced to the combat zone than one that has not had the same pre-exposure.  BUT, all of that means nothing if the troops themselves cannot cope with the environmental conditions.  Can a good soldier adapt to the environment?  Yes, probably more easily than a poor one.  But people from a climate zone that differs extremely from the jungle will suffer incredibly.  For example: I spent 6 months in Costa Rica.  It took me about a month to fully adapt to the climate (hot humid jungles/rainforest and awesome beaches).  Two of the guys I worked with were form Norway, 1 was from Scotland, another from Egypt and the last was from Liberia.  The Norweigans had been there for a year already and had not adapted well at all (Peter had heat stroke twice in a month and went home soon after).  The Scott suffered quite a bit as well, and was always “borrowing” water from me.  Marco (the Liberian) was right at home, almost never even broke a sweat.  Youseff (Egyptian) hated the humidity, but enjoyed the heat, but was not very good at jungle movement.  Whether he was just naturally clumsy or just didn’t pay attention in the woods I don’t know, but if anyone was going to fall or get hurt it was him.

Bit of a ramble, probably lost my point.  YMMV…

I’d think you’d want to do a “pretty background” pdf for webviewing (even without monster mini pix, hut the page background) and a printer friendly one with zero frills.  Either (or both) way getting it out will be a Good Thing.  You can maybe even do a short campaign book or 2 later.

Speaking of accents (and hopefully not hijacking the thread) I was recently told by a linguist that the English had the same accent as Americans until a divergence in the late early 1700’s when people in England began to effect the proto-current English accent.  Who knew!

And congrats on the interview, I’ll give it a listen.

the Goat took a shot, but she isn’t down for the count!  A Super Goat (Chupacabra? Boer goat?  Billy Goat?) sounds like an excellent idea, especially since they have no encountered the Greenies and the tech-heads back home can analyze the damages.

Edit, and I know this may make a few people’s hair stand on end… but Gor had great promise, until the author allowed the fact he was monumental pervert and mad as a hatter to sadly spoil it.

Somehow I missed that whole setting.

For me my first attempt at fantasy battles occurred using the old D&D Chainmail battlegame and was set the Greyhawk world.  Not my fav, but my first RPG world I played in (well, second if you count the generic redbox D&D) before moving to mostly sci-fi.

There is a lot I like about the Harn setting, but it can also be quite restrictive and is very low-fantasy.

But one that I really enjoyed when I was younger but can no longer find any info on is Lavondyss, and RPG based in the “other world” from the Mythago Wodd cycle.  No idea where my buddy got it, but it was very much like playing in a dark ages fantasy setting, but with more moviesque/epic/dark feeling.  I was all very mysterious and edge of your pants survival.

Oh yes Fredd, tanks are mentioned quite frequently, though not in relation to any of those other things…

Thank you for the info Frank.  Best has been figured out so far is that there was a Chinese company buying up the Chinese domain names for every game maker (miniature, RPG, video and mobile) and then holding them hostage for big buy outs (easy to ignore as I get at least an email a week from some foreign locale or another that warn me that my website domain for that country is not secured/for sale/undeveloped/etc.).  Those that weren’t ransomed off got used in some sort of mass email and marketing spamming for various unsavory sexual or “helpful immigration” concerns.  This led to basically a form letter ban-hammer being created and sent out to all businesses that seemed to be sort of involved and all of those domains being shut down.  Legitimate businesses or ones whose IP was hijacked can appeal and be reinstated (basically “I am not a bot” sort of thing), but there’s no point for me as I do not do any business in China.

I would think you’d want a mix of the wealthy, the “middle class”, and the street urchins. The lower the status the simpler the clothing.  But then you also have to ask if Simurgh is a crossroads where people from different cultures pass through (thus bringing their fashion sense with them) or if it’s more of a monocultural kind of place?

One place you can look for different fashions types would be the Star Wars movies, especially Ep.1 -4.  In those movies there are a lot of scenes on different planets, some of which are desertish, and much of the clothing of the more wealthy people seems to have a bit of fantasy edge to it (rather than “future-utilitarian”)

I believe that is incorrect.  There certainly was a B5 game that was based off of BFG, but ACTA was not it.

I absolutely love the B5 ‘period’ but never found rules that tick all my boxes

Ya, is a common issue.  I’ve seen Starmada conversions, FT, and even 1 loony attempt at someone trying to make Federation Commander/B5 work.  I liked to watch the Mongoose B5 game, but there was something about the compulsory movement that seemed off.  B5 is one of those universes where it’s tough to make it both not too gamey and not overly hard.

Yup, that’s the “problem” with LOS beam weapons: anything that comes over the horizon it’s dead meat.  (Real good reason why big stompy mechs are not feasible in a beam weapon society!)

This attack seemed a bit like taking on a Tiger with a sharp stick, and a short one at that!  But, at the same time, I totally get why this sort of surprise fast assault might be the only option when going after such a force defending the shuttles.  Anything else would have been detected and intercepted further out…

Anyhoo, are (or have) you going to paint that 2nd stealthy up?

I bought a TON of the smaller scale ships from AoG when they had their big “end of” sale many moons ago.  I believe they are what you’d call “fleet scale”. They are a heck of a lot less fiddly than their larger cousins, though some would say the detail is too hard to paint for those getting a little aged in the eyes.

Never did get to play a game, as by the time I had everything all painted up people had moved on to the next shiny thing.  Wouldn’t mind busting the old stuff out though, some lovely ship designs.  To me, the 40k Eldar ship designs always fell short compared to the grandeur of the Minbari.
