Not a bad idea at all!  Basically already comes in rows…

    Looks good.

Pirates you say?  More figures?  Boats and dockside scenery perhaps?

All forces have arrived, so now we can get to painting!  There has also been a change of players, as the original Daring player dropped out and finding a replacement took a bit of time.  The new player is thinking of green camo for his units, so that should provide some variation on the table.  Hopefully we can get the game rolling very soon.  We are set to be making the initial force purchases and planing this week.

I thought the Empress Wave was a psychic phenom?  I actually like that Traveller doesn’t really have a “devouring alien horde” trope that the universe is in fear of.  The Chamax are pretty localized, so don’t really count… 😉  I would think that an alien species that strip mines a world would be pretty slow moving, unless there were staggering multi-Tyranid hive fleet like numbers, which at this tech level would probably just invite a bunch of anti-matter missiles or overloaded black-globe generators in their midst.  (can you tell I’m not a fan of thoughtless hordes?  Lol)

I really do think you need to include the veteran/ace modifiers, as we know that the pilot makes a huge difference all things considered.  Of course, you’ll have to keep track for the enemy too… They may already have some real veterans from the first couple years of the war!

I’m behind on Black Sails, still need to finish the last season before starting this one.  But I agree, this would make a fine pirate camp!

I actually keep looking at these rules from the perspective of doing some stuff with Samurai.

It is totally scary to me that I have been thinking the same thing, but the rate at which I am painting minis makes this such a long term project.  Plus, I’d probably then want to turn it into some great sengoku adventure as our French fried has posted… no, must resist all and paint small jets for campaign…arrrrgh.  Crom’s grip is getting stronger!

I would think a triad would be the minimum I would go with any fireteam.  1 dude to command and 2 to fight.  If you’re going with diverse weapons 1 of the dudes would be the hvy weps.

At the beginning of our games the tiles are placed as well as possible, but during games they move slightly as players or visitors bump into the gaming tables etc. Also some of the tiles are ageing, storage and transport do no good to them – and aaargh those which are the most damaged on the sides (and not repaired since a long time) are mine.

Ya, that happens a lot.  I help run a HUGE pirate game that we occasionally take to conventions and before and after every game we have to have a bit of repair time.  There always seems to be something that is broken/chipped/scratched/missing.  Usually it’s parts of the ships, but also the figures tend to get quite abused (seems a lot of players like to Rum-up like real pirates before the game…) and the more intricate scenery nits are sometimes tweaked.  Heck, the little fog machine that goes behind the waterfall on “adventure island” usually breaks down halfway through a game as well!  Last game we ran this young dude tried to run off with a boat, he dropped the thing and badly damaged it when people started chasing him, but apparently made off with a couple of slave figures as well as the entire crew of the British frigate!

And each of them also bearing the arms of an old French barony or province, each its own (or perhaps on a back banner).

Yes, THIS for sure!  Gotta carry on that Noble tradition (reminds me of the Epic scale Knight Houses, really liked them even though they didn’t fit into 40k at all)

After 1,000 years though you’d think they’d have an almost homogeneous setup between the 2 sides, as each new thing tried would eventually be countered and absorbed into the other sides tactics if it’s worthwhile.  So they both could have mechs and big tanks!

    This can drive you nuts!

Just wondering, but are you going to model the residual radiation from those weapons?  One of the things that sucks about using them in the RPG is how they effect the locale, and anyone around them that are not protected…

Most of my gaming is individually based skirmishing, so I have casualty figures that replace fighting figures where they get zapped.  They (mostly) aren’t based and there are dead figures (face down) and WIA-out-of-fight figures (face up, usually bandaged).  The difference is because generally if a Medic can make it to a OOF figure within 3 turns he may be patched up and sent back into the fray.  KIA figures usually need to be recovered before the game ends as well.

Sounds like SAR is kidnapping, it’s coming along.

It really sort of IS!  Hey, if you pluck ’em, you get to keep ’em!  For free, even!

I forsee some horsetrading with this too.  Like “I’ll give you back your ace experienced pilot if you give me back my 2 regular and 2 rookies pilots…”

Managed to gather the guys (via skype) for a chat session and to hammer out the rest of the rules, etc.  This thing has taken as odd swerve.  It appears our little war will be a bit more gentlemanly than we had originally intended, and some new rules and units have been added.  For air battles we have decided that each side can deploy SAR helos to recover ANY pilot shot down.  Pilots recovered go into the pool for the Corp that did the recovery job.  Pilots not recovered by games end go back to the unemployment line and must be purchased anew or may be kept by the player in whose territory they came down for 1/2 cost.  SAR helos can be shot at by SAM or aircraft up to the point where they pickup a pilot, after that they may only be shot at by AAA.

For ground games we’ve added CASEVAC vehicles.  Again, the point is to pickup “destroyed” units and keep them.  A tank, infantry section, etc that is destroyed will leave a marker which can be picked up by by the Evac truck.  Those not recovered go back to the unemployed pool.

As a corollary to these rules a side is also now permitted to send SAR or CASEVAC units out on their own missions in order to try to swoop the enemy.  Meaning: a SAR helo from team 1 can be sent to an area where teams 2 and 3 are likely to fight and the team 1 SAR helo can enter the battle and try to pickup downed pilots!  This sort of snachery shenanigans should add a bit of fun, and give any kids hanging about something to do.

The gents also put down their corporation names, colors, and soundbites.  We Have:

COBALT COMBAT SERVICES – light blue and white – “We make war, for you.”

DARING INTERNATIONAL – grey camo, red trim- “No danger is too great for our combat professionals”

SHADOW FORCE – Black- “If you’re buyin’, we’re bombin'”

We also sorted out the map, agreed on the economy, and made the hit model for the ground combat a little more complicated than it originally was, as well as adding “stress points” so merc units have a potential to break and flee to spend their pay another day.

Planes should be arriving soon, and additional ground forces still need to be procured.

Cure for broken helo blade: use clear acrylic or plastic rotor discs!

For scenarios: you can also do a non-combat one where the troop comes across an overturned farm animal truck and must herd up all of the critters before they wander too far so the baddies don’t get their hands on them.

There’s also one you can do ala-vietnam: insert, evacuate the villagers for relocation (probably unwillingly) and demo the vill to keep it out of enemy hands/cut them off from supply.

Protect the grain stores?  As in, the enemy tries to raid a farm for to carry off supplies, and if they can’t take it then they burn it, sort of thing?

I just bought a bunch of planes direct from TD, should be here in 2 weeks.  Brookhurst Hobbies in CA used to stock TD, but no longer.

Pico Armor ships super fast, so you’d get an order from them in less than a week.  I mix the 2 companies, as there are some models from each range that work for me.  I can say, however, that the O8 F-4, Mig-21, and Buccaneer are IMO better than the TD offerings, but I like the TD Me-109s better (O8 have thicker wings and the tails are odd)

More than just body count “errors” occurred in Vietnam.  The brass in MACV sometimes made up entire battles for “good PR”. I know for a fact that 2 battles described in major news magazines did not happen, not in the locations they said, and not with the the units stated as I know people that were in those specific units at that time.

But the brass also pushed it downawards as well.  My father was in Special Forces, in Project SIGMA in III Corps.  His unit worked in-country recon directly for II Field Force (in III Corps, each team was 2 US and 4-6 indigenous) and some cross border stuff for SOG (SIGMA became Command and Control South for SOG towards the end of his tour in early ’67) and several times his team saw and reported battalion size units in Warzones C and D, and several times MACV and IIFF told them they were wrong.  His team was once compromised and got into a running firefight with a MFVC regimental HQ unit that the brass said didn’t exist so couldn’t have happened…  These sorts of things contributed to Tet’68, which was actually no surprise to MACV as they had all the enemy troop movements.

I’d say the biggest misreporting of the Vietnam war though was Walter Crankcase stating on TV that millions saw that the FWF had lost the war and that the communists could not be beaten.  He was dead wrong as the VC were finished as a fighting force and the NVA took huge loses, but that misreport led to an extreme alteration of the war.

Probably not the same sort of thing y’all previously mentioned (such as quartermaster reports, kill counts, etc) but probably way more overarching effect.

I like Khurasan miniatures but these minis lacked a lot of detail

All depends upon what sculptor he buys the masters from.  At one point he had minis from 18 different sculptors, have no idea what the count would be now.  Makes consistency a bit of an issue.

Now to be fair I am not a good mini painter

I think you sell yourself short, good sir!  They look great and I’d be moire than happy to play with them any day!

Note Both Power Projection; Fleet an Escort, are both scaled to Large ship i.e. High Guard scale ships.

That’s a bummer, I had thought I saw that the ESCORT version was more detailed for the various ships vs their FLEET stats.

Oh, and y’all have seen this? I mean alongside his Geomorphs book

I had not!  Brilliant!  This dude is pretty dang good.  I might have to give him a little contact and chat over some projects…

I hit on the idea of reading the description from manufacturer and in the Laserburn rules, combining that with my first impressions of the figures and any later observations, to come up with a set of parameters with which to search the Traveller Map for a home world.

That is a very interesting (and I thing correct) way to go about it!  One of the best things about Traveller is that it is so sandbox.  I always loved that you could have your PCs on a medieval planet one game and on an ultra high tech planet the next, thus allowing you to use any dang miniatures you have.

I took the same approach when looking at my GZG NSL figures which I intend to be my Sword Worlders.

Really like your thought process here.  I’ve read several different descriptions of Sword Wolder militaires, and none of them seem to agree.  In some they speak of each world basically giving a levy to the military of the nation, while in others it talks as though each planet’s military is separately supplied but use a unified C3 for interstellar combat coordination.  So one write up speaks to homogenized equipment while the other  would make each planets forces unique looking as compared to the others.   This sort of thing is part of the problem of having too many cooks in the canon kitchen…
