Despite routing another Spartan Hoplite unit, hit in both flank and rear the Athenians are destroyed. Seeing the fate of their heavy Infantry the supporting archers and light infantry take to their heels and flee the field…

The last men standing on the stricken field… exhausted Spartan Hoplites.

On the left flank, after breaking the Athenian heavy Infantry a Spartan phalanx, that had been taken in the flank by a spirited charge of Athenian skirmishers can turn their full attention on their tormentors…

In what proves to be a short and decisive action the Spartans get stopped in their tracks!!!

“This is a story you’ll tell your grandchildren, and mightily bored they’ll be too!”

Shouts Nobbicus the Brewmaster of Athens’s ‘Fisherman’s Arms’ as he leads his victorious shower back into the depths of the woods…

    VICTORY!!!

The might of Sparta drawn up on the ground where the Athenian host had stood. Their hard fighting King, Queen and senior Generals salute their victory…

As the fighting grew fiercer, as if upon a given signal, both sides Cavalry broke ranks and fled the field. In the dust and confusion even a Veteran Spartan phalanx broke and fled back over the river!

Supporting Spartan units were incensed and threw back the Athenians on the right flank, smashing all before them…

On the Spartan left flank, with the fall of the sulky Athenian General, here too the Athenians began to give ground…

On the Spartan right flank their superior training soon tells and the Athenian line begins to waver. Both Titchocles and the Athenian Cavalry Occifer force their way into the front rank and their men take heart from their valiant example…

Until they are singled out by two Spartan Heroes, the Occifer is brought down by a spear thrust in the throat, and Titchocles falls to a downwards thrust through the top of his melon. The renegade Spartan dwarf finding recognition in a good death that his fellow Spartans never gave him during his short life!

I’ve been thinking of something along those lines for our big summer wargame. I’ve got a rather large castle which would be perfect for the nazis secret base/laboratory. I’ve got SS Guards and zombie already painted up. Drop in the The Dook and his Paras, add Porta, Tiny and the Old ‘un who swop to help hammer the SS loonies and kill the mutants…

    what’s not to like?

Seen the Waffen SS and British Paratroops I’ve already painted and led (disastrously) into action? The figures were indeed sold by North Star, Scarab Miniatures have the molds now, the big chaps kind of grow on you as they get paint slapped on ’em!

Trumpets blare and Pipes trill, both sides advance.

The view from the Spartan lines…

    From the Athenian side…

As the Spartan Cavalry dash over the bridge a shower of javelins, from Athenians skulking in the cornfield empty a few saddles…

Spartan heavy infantry follow their mounted brethren over the bridge and then deploy, silently, into line of battle…

That little squirt Titchocles is going to wind up on the pointy end of Arichilles spear! As for General Grumpy, if memory serves, both him and his underlings came ready painted. I just tickled them up a bit and re-based ’em, put him on a chair arm for a moment, forgot he was there…

and sat on him, he’s looked grumpy ever since!

As for the rules, these days I’m into the KISS Principle for Wargaming, so it’s One Hour Wargames rules.

    BASH ON RECCE!!!

"Wot did you do in the war Grandad?"

"I was with Harry... At The Bridge!"

in reply to: Vorwärts Soldaten… #132648

    “Bring up the PIAT!”

A fat bomb flies toward the Jerry eight wheeler and explodes with a thunderous detonation on a nearby wall. The Recce men are using the weapon’s ability to operate perfectly well from inside the left flank farm building. The German vehicles clank to a halt and Panzer Grenadiers move forward…

Straight into the line of fire from the Bren sighted on the right flank, the fire is devastating, knocking down an MG team and bowling the gunner over the side of his half track! The PIAT booms again falling short, but keeping Jerry at a distance…

The Recce Squadron’s CO moves out to support his men, and is instantly hit, but only receives a flesh wound…

The Panzer Grenadiers return fire all along the line, the PIAT bomber becoming their first victim. Savage bursts of Spandua fire zips across the fields on the right from the Veteran SS NCO now manning the half track…

The Airborne Recce suffer badly, but the Bren gunner and his mate fight back gallantly.

Return fire takes a heavy toll…

The Airborne Recce Sergeant fits another magazine to his Sten and blazes away…

On the left flank, machine gun fire from both the half track and eight wheeler take another heavy toll, but not before a Recce marksmen puts paid to the SS Officer!

The Recce Squadron’s CO has worked his way round the right hand farmhouse and sees the enemy advancing to mop up the position. Having realised, there’s no more PIAT bombs tootling about, the enemy armour has advanced. In the finest Airborne tradition the CO storms forward grenading and tommy-gunning the stunned SS men…

In the brief respite the Sergeant dashes from the farmhouse to his CO’s side…

“Sergeant, it’s time for desperate measures, you got any grenades?”

    “A couple, one each Sir?”

    “That’ll do nicely, ready?”

    “Sir!”

    “Waho Mohammed!!!”

The two Recce men storm forward, theirs is the glory, as they both fall to the firepower of the waiting SS men…

A noble sacrifice in the finest tradition of the Airborne.

“They sleep with their pals, till the last trumpet sounds.”

With scouts out both sides close in on the village…

General Scaborus leads from the front, storming the main compound and double tapping two Waynesmen…

On the General’s right flank the lead Scabby scout finds out where the villagers have gone. Kicking down the hovel’s door he is charged by a screeching Tyranid!!!

The creature quickly rends the unfortunate scout limb from limb, scuttles forward and gets another Scabby before he can draw a bead. These vile creature seems to have a taste for rancid and postulating human flesh?

A general firefight now breaks out with the Waynesmen’s power armour proving very resilient to Scabby blasters…

The Scabby’s armour seems as scabby as the blokes inside it, and the rampaging Tyranid also gets the good news…

On the plus side in all the mayhem, Scaborus is the only combatant who’s still mission orientated. He breaches the main compound door and pays a terrible price…

As the General’s death screams echo around the village the last Scabby’s break and run back to their landing craft. The Tyranid that killed him enjoys it’s victory for only seconds, before Waynesmen cut it down. They form a perimeter around the main compound. Knowing the main hall is empty of vile beasties the two scouts enter to locate and free Professor Arrikenstein……

There is a faint rustle to their right rear and a shadow hurtles from the unchecked hovel. The courtyard is turned into a charnel house!!!

Although badly shaken the Waynesmen are made of stern stuff a barrage of blaster fire greets the monster as it sprints in, screeching, for the kill…

Sergeant Quincannon stalks through the carnage and brings a scruffy looking oik to ‘The Dook’

    “Doctor Arrikenstein I presume?”

“It’s Professor Arrikenstein, actually young man!”

“Would you kindly step this way Sir?”

We had a ‘Custer’s Last Stand’ in which the 7th Cavalry player could emerge victorious. Each band of Indians were led by a Big Chief, after each massacre the ‘Custer’ who’d nobble the most Chiefs was the winner. If nothing else, the game was an excuse to use all those Trooper firing from behind his an riddled horse, for a change.

"Wot did you do in the war Grandad?"

Emerging from the shrubbery Putrid gives out his orders. Thorkel the Tall, on the right flank, will pounce like a wolf on the goat herd and snaffle ’em off to the ship. Putrid and Bok Bandylegs will storm the village ransacking the hovels for secrets therein., his other crewmen will hang about a bit outside to see wot happens…

Meanwhile Lord Bada Boggweede and his Champion of Renown, Snottboks have not been idle, fanning out they make a cautious advance into Kleethorpe. His Lordship scuttling off toward the goat sanctuary where he thinks it might be a tad quieter…

Putrid and Bok Bandylegs head for the loot!

Bada’s peace and quiet is shattered by the blood curdling battle cry of Thorkell the Tall and his Flagman…

The rest of the Saxons move further into the village…

Keep a beady eye on that scruffy looking oik with the crossbow, turns out he’s a wrong ‘un!

With great shouts and much banging of swords (and axes) on shields the fight in the goat pen is on, blink and you’ll miss it…

An arrow hits the Viking bowman and downs him, Bada Boggweede axes down Thorkell the Tall, who’d slipped in a pile of goat shit, and his Flagman met a similar fate at the hands of Bada’s trusty spearman.  A disaster for the raiders, round one to the Saxons!

Champion of Renown Snottboks’s men hotfoot it toward the village’s Great Hall…

But, Putrid son of Putrid and Bok the Berserker lick him to it! Ordering his men to charge the Saxons, him and Bok enter the Great Hall and glean the treasure chest…

As the Vikings charge two rapid crossbow bolts whistle out from the shrubbery and thwack into two of Putrid’s warriors.

The smelly oik with the lethal crossbow.

The odds have changed quickly and the Vikings come off badly in the hand to hand fight…

Emerging from the Great Hall Putrid and Bok drop the treasure chest and prepare to fight for their lives…

The two Viking hardmen make quick work of the Saxons, then another treacherous crossbow bolt hits Bok right in the canister!!!

Emboldened by this fortuitous turn of events, Champion of Renown Snottboks and Lord Boggweede’s standard bearer rush in to finish off Putrid son of Putrid…

But, dear saga readers, this is no ordinary man they’re trying conclusions with this is a Jarl of the Norsemen! Putrid’s no slouch himself when it comes to going a tad berserk…

As Champion of Renown Snottboks and his pal soon find out!!!

‘”I’ve got one bolt left for you Norseman!”

But, dear saga readers, this is no ordinary man the scruffy oik is trying to potshot, this is a Jarl of the Norsemen! Catching the bolt contemptuously with his great shield the Viking Chieftain realises the game’s up and legs it back to the Long Serpent with his only surviving underling…

A victorious Lord Bada Boggweede contemplates whether he should reward his surviving followers with a gold coin apiece…

    after they’ve buried the dead.
