Iain FullerParticipant
Cheers chaps!
Iain FullerParticipantReally nice, the H&R M60 is a lovely model.
GHQ do the Egyptian AIFV and Scotia the Fahd APC if you are thinking of expanding this force.
Iain FullerParticipantCheers Graham, might do then next time I’m up. If I go to Workington though do I have to take my own jam?
Iain FullerParticipantA place very close to my heart, I will pop along next time I’m up visiting me Nanna in Whitehaven.
Thanks for posting marras!
Iain FullerParticipantAs Cerdic says the rents in London are crippling (try living here!) so that’s probably why the lack of shops – plus t’interweb is probably the way we all buy the majority of our figures these days aint it?
All of Cerdic’s suggestions for places to visit are great ones, have you thought of looking to see if any of the London clubs have their night on when you are in town? Maybe pop along to have a butchers at one of them, plus all of them shouldn’t be too hard to get to if you are staying centrally. I go to South London Warlords, we meet on Monday nights and visitors are always welcome.
Iain FullerParticipantLovely stuff as usual Bish.
Iain FullerParticipantAB – either their 15/18mm or 20mm ranges. Just a joy to paint and they look terrific.
Iain FullerParticipantAbsolutely top-notch Malc, really clever use of materials.
Iain FullerParticipantNick, I apologise, I should’ve said techno-dunce or some such. As someone who has read The Making of the English Working Class and whose dad was a trade unionist I should know better! Consider me telt.*
And thanks about the hills.
(* Before anyone starts: ‘telt’ is a dialect form of ‘told’ from West Cumbria, I always use it for when reprimanded as that’s what me Mam and Nanna would say!)
Iain FullerParticipantCheers Mike, I’m quite a luddite really and do need telling!
Iain FullerParticipantNapoleonic Wurttembergers are my absolute favourite with Saxons second, but any of the other Rhinebund units will do at a pinch!
Finns in WW2.
Cold War Austrians are right up there too now that I’ve played them a few times.
Iain FullerParticipantReally like this! Lovely figures and basing.
This project is seriously tempting me to have a bash at this myself.
Iain FullerParticipantThanks guys, had a dig about and figured it out in the end using your pointers.
Mike, it was a list thing that I had to paste in URL’s – bit of a pain that they make you do that for non-Wordpress things but not too much bother.
Iain FullerParticipantWell, as I am now the only person putting on Modern games at my club, since Jonathan buggered off to live in France, I need some inspiration as the old grey matter might start to struggle with coming up with new ideas all the time!
Plus I never win anything and it’d right cheer me up!!
Iain FullerParticipantAs I said at the other place, well jealous….
One question though: How did you get those BMD’s on top of that Canal Terminal building?
Iain FullerParticipantThanks chaps –
Mike – yeah it is supposed to be an auto-list type thing, I have followed their instructions but it doesn’t seem to want to play.
Norm – thanks for the tips I’ve basically done that but in the WordPress stylee, it is still being a git though!
Iain FullerParticipantLovely figures as usual Sparker.
I must apologise for not replying to your comments on my blog in a timely manner, completely down to me being new at it all.
Iain FullerParticipantSorry Count B, I completely forgot to answer this the other day.
It says that there is a Phishing Risk, I do remember looking at your site before so is probably my new software.
Iain FullerParticipantAaargh, I really wanted to have a look at how you did them Count B but my computer is blocking your blog as ‘Unsafe’?
Are they H&R, if so which ones?
Iain FullerParticipantCheers Jim.
For the Austrians I just used Vallejo Military Green (089).
For the Poles I used Vallejo Military Green, Vallejo Flat Brown (140) and Army Painter ‘Monster Brown’ (the buff-ish coloured bits) – I was basing it on the early WW2 scheme.
I use a black primer.
Iain FullerParticipantCheers Mike.
Iain FullerParticipantThanks again chaps!
Editor Mike: what have I done wrong with my signature that doesn’t make the link go ‘orange’? Can’t work it out for the life of me.
Iain FullerParticipantThe game that I’m running on Monday will be not as tank-heavy as usual for a FFT3 game – only about 4 coys a side and then as reinforcements. I think it will be a nice challenge for the two guys taking part and I want to see how it goes without relying on the armour – although one side will have a full recce unit with lots of Armoured Cars.
By the way Jim, when are we getting to see your imagi-nation kit?
Iain FullerParticipantCheers chaps!
Jim – The first one will be next Monday as I’ve been asked to put a game on. It will be Poles vs Austrians as that is all I’ve got done at the moment so will have to be creative on the scenario back story! I’ve been swagging some Soviet kit off of eBay recently and will be able to field some of them soon, I’m leaning towards doing the Czechs after that.
Iain FullerParticipantThat looks fantastic Sparker, beautiful set-up and models – I really wish I had the money and the space to get into larger scale Cold War gaming, maybe one day………
With regards to the scenario: my Step-dad was serving in BAOR in the Signals during this period and he once told me that part of his job at the time was to listen to what was going on over the border and to track radar signals. Just before the invasion of Czechoslovakia happened he said that they watched all the radar signals going out across the border and that they were convinced that the Warsaw Pact was getting ready to attack the West, he said it was a relief that they all came on again round the Czech border so I guess that everyone got really nervous at the time.
Iain FullerParticipantI first started with 20mm and WRG rules with an old mate from school then I went to my first club in the mid-80’s where we played a lot of Challenger using 6mm (I bought OMG as well Rod but could never convince anyone to have a bash – did you ever get a game of it played?).
Since rekindling my interest in wargaming a few years ago I’ve dived back into 6mm using FFT3 which I really enjoy and are the standard set down at the club, I’ve got an Austrian Bgde plus my alt-history Poles/Nigerians with next up being a Soviet force and then either Belgians or Dutch.
For some reason the whole Team Yankee thing is beginning to right hack me off, it comes across sometime as if Cold War gaming is just being invented and it has left me about as underwhelmed as when ‘Big Sam’ took over the Hammers!
Iain FullerParticipantand the opening shots come where everyone expected, Fulda Gap.
Err, only if you were in V Corp surely – I reckon the Ivans would have hit everyone at the same time.
Iain FullerParticipantMight be greedy but, can’t we have both?
Iain FullerParticipantBritish uniforms look a few years older!
Iain FullerParticipantAll my bases are MDF from Warbases, for my 18mm Napoleonics I use 2mm and my 6mm Moderns have 3mm.
Apart from the great value for money and speedy service that you get from them they are happy to knock up anything that you ask – couldn’t recommend them enough.
Iain FullerParticipantHave you seen this guy’s set-up before Thaddeus?
http://prometheusinaspic.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/1809-spaniards-run-out-at-last-2.html
Iain FullerParticipantHello Mike,
Great choice mate, my all time favourite forces.
A couple of questions though. Which army are you looking to do, and what year? Which ruleset are you looking to use as well as that may have a bearing on how you go about things.
This is a great resource, I have all of these CD’s and they have a massive amount of detailed info on them covering the whole period and they are really cheap (not sure on postage to you though!): http://www.thehistorybookman.webeden.co.uk/buy-e-books/4579739020
If you are interested in the 1809 campaign, actually even if you are not, I’d say ‘With Eagles to Glory’ by John H. Gill is a must for anyone interested in the CoR.
Also you can always ask on here if all else fails!
As for ‘Army List’ I’m not sure as it will be dependant on what Army you are interested in doing – Bavarian, Saxon, Berg or the Micro-States? – a nice mix would be to go for the German Division that served in Spain or the ‘Division Princiere’ formed in 1809 with some Cavalry and Artillery attached. Again the rules you are going to use and the size of the force that you want to go for (Brigade, Division, Corp?) will have a bearing. For me one of the greatest attractions of the CoR forces is that you can build the whole army of a nation to fit any sized action and there’s a great variety of uniforms to stop things getting boring. Indeed I reckon they have the best of all the Napoleonic Uniforms – Bavarians in their Cornflower blue and helmets, Saxon Heavy Cavalry, Berg Lancers will usually pop up in most Napoleonic top ten uniforms lists!
My recommendation though would be Wurttemberg – a cracking army: good quality, well balanced with a good mix of units and, if you are doing the early period, some of the best headgear ever!
Hope that helps.
Iain FullerParticipantCheers for the comments gents.
Iain FullerParticipantCheers chaps!
I’ll be trying to update as much as possible.
Iain FullerParticipantHere you go Sparker – thanks for the impetus to finally start the old blog thing!
https://tracksandthreads.wordpress.com/
Iain FullerParticipantI finished painting up some 6mm ‘Alt-History’ Polish Cold War armour whilst listening to this just now. I like the idea Sparker, ideal for listening to whilst painting (makes a nice change from The Jam which I always seem to end up listening to – must be an attached memory thing!).
My only gripes would be: No mention of Fist Full of Tows rules, and you did not go into the benefits of 6mm gaming but everything else was spot on – I’m off onto Amazon trying to buy Chieftains now.
Iain FullerParticipantOld Glory 15’s do a range which is supposed to be good.
http://www.oldglory15s.com/Franco-Prussian-and-Franco-Austrian-Wars_c425.htm
Or you could try Freikorp 15’s.
Iain FullerParticipantMike – I’d go with 6mm as you can get a lot of tanks/vehicles/troops on the table and do large scale battles without needing to hire a hall to do so! Check out the following companies: Heroics & Ros, Scotia Grendel, GHQ and C-in-C. The first two are UK based and are 1/300th and are quite cheap per model, quality of the models does vary but once painted up and based nicely look fine; the last two are 1/285th, US based, more expensive but mostly better detailed – I don’t have any of these so going by reputation and photo’s.
Jim – I’d like to hear more about your stuff/take a look at it, do you have a blog at all? BTW – I’ve clipped a bit off the end of the Osorio’s gun and it has made a great difference.
Iain FullerParticipantJim – thanks! I did buy a couple of Osorio’s and was going to use it as is but there’s something about the gun on it, were yours really long and thin? The Finns are going to get the Vickers too by the way (also might substitute it for the Leopard in Canadian or Australian armies). As for the OF-40 I guess I’ll have to use a Leopard 1a4 as a proxy unless it is on H&R’s to do list…. a Palmaria SPG would be ace too!
Mike – would be good to check out an AAR or some piccies?
Tim – that is exactly what me and a mate at school did, we used the WRG rules and whatever models we bought with a rule that we could not have what the other had. Unfortunately my Panther/Leopard force was never a match for Andy’s Chieftains but a few valuable lessons were learnt about indirect approaches and the need for flanking!
Also good to see that I’m not the only one doing this – gives me some impetus to start the old blog!
Iain FullerParticipantWikipedia is surprisingly good, search for ‘Cold War Weapons’ and you’ll be able to bounce around from there.
Getting hold of an old ‘The Military Balance’ for a year around when you want to set it in would be an invaluable resource as well.
