Honestly, I can’t wait to order the guy on the right hand side, they’re all great but I can see so many uses for him.
What this dude?
That’s him! One to be accompanied by a Xyston Scythian warrior woman as a sort of explorer/wizard and one to have some gubbinz added to as a space colonist. Great miniature – I love weird headwear.
jagannathMemberSorry to totally derail just for one second – what paint are your bases done with? is it that Coat D’Arms 522 peaking in above? What’s the colour called? I really like it, it’s ‘sandier’ than the Vallejo Sand colour I use for desert bases.

Grain store’s a great idea btw.
jagannathMemberThanks everyone!
@Earther – I’m really pleased with the face/arm on belt/hairstyle combo, really gives him the ‘sneer’ I wanted.@Etanger – thank you. Honestly, they’re some of the best 15mm sculpts I’ve painted. The perfect level of detail to a)get a brush on and b) leave you with a nice, clear model. Absolutely recommended.
jagannathMemberThanks – I’ve barely painted any in the past few weeks (got a move at the end of the month so I’m rushing to get certain things to the ‘varnished’ stage – 6mm and terrain mostly – before needing to pack up), which has boshed my momentum a bit. Finished this guy recently though (scuse the photos, lightbox is packed away). I’m really pleased with the conversion
jagannathMemberOn the one hand, you’re swimming against the current by using 15mm for a low fig count skirmish context.
Without sounding defensive over my chosen scale, I think 15mm is in the ascendancy still – there’s some really excellent stuff coming out of all varieties. More threads appear on forums daily, and in the sci-fi/fantasy world I can’t remember the last ‘mass battle’ post I saw anyone make…
Single figures at a slightly increased price is the way to go for skirmish minis – I’m with you Michael, I regularly have to buy packs for the odd mini I want and ‘discard’ others into my spares. Don’t really mind (I often draw on those spares) but sometimes there’s a chunk I won’t use (eg I’ve bought 90% of Xyston’s character packs, but only want about 20% of the contents). Weirdly, this approach can make 15mm more expensive than 28 sometimes, but that’s life. Even with this effect the price tends to be balanced out by terrain, which is always cheaper in 15mm.
Ral Partha are obviously putting work into releasing single minis (first Daemonworld and now the former Critical Mass range) so I guess it works. Especially if you contrast that with the feedback Battle Valour and Troublemaker seem to regularly get about their ranges – too big a pack size, too expensive to buy a selection.
Can’t wait for these releases – I’ll be getting a couple of sets, some to convert to Sci-Fi.
Don’t really have any feedback on why the buildings wouldn’t sell – pricing seems right to me (appreciate I haven’t placed my promised order yet mind) – I wonder if, unfortunately, the middle eastern building range is
a) fairly heavily saturated (modern, flames of war, mdf) and
b) If I was going to try and make any building, I’d probably choose and adobe style.Dunno, just thinking out loud. I’m super stoked there’s people like you out there though getting things done and making things available!
jagannathMemberHiya all,
Well, I’ve daubed some paint on some 6’s for the first time in ages – I’m currently working on an idea for an Ork Warz! project using my custom units for Horizon Wars and some of the excellent Defeat in Detail Skinnerz – the idea is it will be a kind of mass battle-Gorkamorka type vibe.
Having said that, I felt a bit guilty about some other 6mm stuff I hadn’t finished, so got to work
This battlegroup is 5 Pathfinders, 5 Recon squads (3 men – a sniper, a spotter and a drone on a smaller base), 5 light skimmers and 3 small mechs. Depending on what units I use them as in HW it’ll give me about 25-30P, more than enough for the 15P games I’ve got planned. Scuse the glossiness – my new basing formula involves a glossy homemade ‘glaze’ that’ll get matted off at the end. More to come soon I hope.
jagannathMemberCheers! I like to think of them as misunderstood!
jagannathMember‘iya,
Haven’t put my last entry up
Some REALLY excellent sculpts from Slap minis’ kickstarter – I heat tell they’re up for retail soon. Fantastic sculpts, some of the best 15s I’ve painted.
jagannathMemberSmashing! Glad Eydis and Erland are united!
jagannathMemberThanks both
Got a couple of weeks worth of entries to add today
My 15mm sci fi is slowly getting to the point I want it – a chast of characters that I can draw on to play out some adventures. Civvies, slaves and slave traders next!
jagannathMemberSorry Ali, didn’t see your reply – thanks very much.
Here’s my latest group – loosely based on Tin Tin. I’m not 100% that I pulled the Tin Tin similarity off, but I’m chuffed with them as Minis – my overall 15mm project is just to paint loads of characters and individuals so that whatever game I want to play I’ll have the protagonists and NPCs. I’m slowly starting to feel like I’m getting there!
jagannathMemberThanks all – no update yet, another batch are about half done plus some barbarians, but I’ve been super distracted by making a sci-fi slave trader this week and turning ancient slaves and civilians into sci-fi slaves and civilians. I’ll put some pics up this weekend.
@Patrice – thanks, that’s exactly the sort of fantasy world I’m trying to create, as opposed to a normal ‘wester europe/dark ages’ fantasy world.jagannathMemberWhat about sconces either side of the door? Might help mark it out as sacred?
jagannathMemberCheers!
Yeah, here they are with my latest unit stood near the doors
jagannathMemberLove it – going to be casting?
jagannathMemberThat’s top, just the thing for Crom. Second version is better.
jagannathMemberYeah absolutely – you’d be miffed if you’d ordered them for 28mm, definitely. Strictly speaking they’re scaled to about 1:75 I reckon, but with my 2mm bases 15s look just right to me.
The 3 smaller buildings are just connecting corridors, which is handy!
jagannathMemberSuper sweet, they 15mm?
Cheers. Oui oui – from here:
They’re a bit less ‘characterful’ (though maybe that’s not quite the fairest word) than Copplestone but work really well. They’re meant to be Picts.
jagannathMemberAre these the minis from the Evil Men Indigogo? I was always gutted I missed that – seem to be similar but there’s some poses I can’t see – maybe not released yet. I’ve got a 10mm project on the backburner these might slot into….
jagannathMemberStoked that you’re releasing that – I need to order a chunk off you still. Just putting the finishing touches to my barbarians, so I’ll be up and running on my desert fantasy project soon.
jagannathMemberSorry, missed this reply – that’s a great idea. Somewhere out there in Google-land you’ve reminded me that there’s a great tutorial on that very thing – then using a blender to chop up.
I’ll dig it out.
jagannathMemberHi all,
Sorry, neglected this thread a bit. Not done a huge amount on these but I am trying to source some weird brightly coloured sponge to turn into foliage – no joy yet though.
I’m working on Entries for the lead painting league over of LAF at the mo – there will be a 6mm entry so once that’s done I’ll post it here.
jagannathMemberbut I really like resin cast terrain.
May I ask why?
Is it a durability / strength thing?
Or convenience, in that you don’t have to make anything?
Or summat else?Yeah – I don’t have great storage space so terrain tends to get stored in tubs. I do my best to be careful but I just find the paint jobs on resin after a gloss coat and then a matte is really durable and I don’t have to worry about denting it, unlike foam. I also don’t always have a huge amount of hobby time, so terrain needs to be fairly quick – basically I’m happy to buy instead of make generally, so I can spend my time on minis.
jagannathMemberJust to be a voice of dissent, I’d definitely buy resin rocks. Yes, I could make my own but I really like resin cast terrain.
Is the brick building a smoke house? Or barn?
jagannathMemberStoked for these – need to rustle up a few quid then I’ll be ordering a fair few. Site looks and works great!
jagannathMemberWhat about Baueda? http://www.baueda.com/logistics.html#LGS1
jagannathMemberLooks bang on to me – exactly what I’d expect to pay.
jagannathMemberThese look boss. What sort of prices are you thinking?
jagannathMemberHullo mate – only made the post as I left work today so I think they’ll be with you Thursday.
Still aiming to release buildings on 20th?
jagannathMemberRoger that – might be Monday when I can get to the post room.
jagannathMemberReally?
How much do you want for them?Oh nowt, don’t worry – I won’t put my email up here but I bought a couple of tanks from you on the 29th, my name’s Rory – can you find my email from that? Whizz me an email with your address and I’ll pop them in the post.
jagannathMemberI’ll happily whizz you some copplestone Picts? I reckon I’ve got 5 or so warriors and 5 or so archers sat around doing absolutely nowt.
jagannathMemberFor small scales I really like the ‘sand’ one. It’s pretty fine so doesn’t dry brush brilliantly – I apply it, touch up any missing areas with a matching Vallejo colour (Iraqi sand I think) then ‘wash’ it for depth, but my wash is just a lightly tinted matte medium as opposed a full dark wash. These bases look great though.
jagannathMember“Underscaled” not undervalued.
jagannathMemberThese look great, stoked to order some… good scale too, 15mm terrain seems to often be 1:100, undervalued against most figs
jagannathMemberThat sounds brilliant, wicked idea.
jagannathMemberThank you! Well I am working on some 15mm ones too – I love those Ikwen models but I wish there was some more options, close combat and command figures. Maybe some bows or hunting rifles.
I’ve got a few packs of these on the way http://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/product-category/onslaught-miniatures/avians/ to populate this village. You’re right though, could do with a good 6mm irregular alien force.
jagannathMemberIt’s funny you should say that because I’ve got this saved as a terrain reference pic:
and I was just thinking how these aren’t that far off if I wanted to make some like that. I take any reference to Nausicaa as a massive compliment!!!
jagannathMember‘iya,
I might not have much new to show but I have been prattling about with these
So far they’re based and basecoated – I’ll be making them much lighter and giving the doors a tint so they stand out but they’re getting there. I need to make a tool that’s a small sponge but still rough for the next few painting layers.
They’re by no means amazing, but I’m pleased with them, add a bit of flavour to the style of sci-fi I’m trying to capture with my 6mm.
jagannathMemberI religiously use Testors Dullcote and i spray that over any mosspads or clumps with no problem, it’s been quite a long time since I’ve used loose static grass though.
