Of course I NEED them… I can handle it… Can’t I…?

ParticipantSometimes its called “rubber steel sheet”. Sign companies sell it much cheaper than hobby shops do, and it quite often comes in roll 600mm wide.
Yes indeed. DON’T buy it from wargame retailers! My late mum was a signwriter and would buy rolls of the stuff for the same price as an A4 sheet being sold by a certain well-known wargames-related company. She kept my entire club supplied for free, just from her off-cuts.
Her offcuts kept me going for ten years after her death, but I eventually had to get some more and used this company, who produce a good product at a decent price: First 4 Magnets

ParticipantOK, so what do you do if Jimmy Cockdicer rolls two dice, gets one straight and one cocked, then re-rolls the cocked die, and it hits the other die causing it to change result?
It’s a radical concept I know, but I just move the non-cocked dice out of the way before re-rolling the rest.
I know that this idea is possibly being greeted with the same look the dog gives me when I ask her to give me the ball so I can throw it again…

ParticipantPeople who try to re-roll non-cocked dice get a dual-purpose artillery stick across the knuckles…
I’ve actually encountered people who attempt to change their policy of re-rolling or not re-rolling based purely on what they rolled… They’re dead now…

ParticipantReally enjoyed reading your article. Fascinating account of the Freikorps! I’ve always thought the “Petite Guerre”, despite Frederick’s distaste for such a plebeian form of war, an intriguing part of 18th century warfare. Your painting is certainly impressive. Great job! Now, my rulebook is in the basement, and I am not, but from memory – doesn’t Shako have a SYW appendix to adapt those rules for the earlier period?
Thanks Tony!
Yes it did, but it was bloody awful. 🙂

ParticipantIt’s suddenly occurred to me that after painting yet more Germans for King Louis, it doesn’t seem as though there were many actual Frenchmen in the French Army of the Seven Years War… 😉

ParticipantThese do look lovely! They have that kind of timeless toy soldier look that could equally be from a Charles Grant book or appear at Partizan next year.
Yes, they do remind me of reading ‘Charge!’ for the first time, some 40 years ago. 🙂

ParticipantJust to update the above, the sequel to this utterly superb book, entitled ’46 Royal Marine Commando: Broken Bridges – Rivers To Cross (from Normandy to the German Baltic Coast)’ has now been published on a VERY limited print run and is available from the author for £55, including postage.

ParticipantThanks Tony! 🙂
The winning game was very good, to be fair (and was in the central space with lots of lovely natural light…). It was a 28mm F&IW game and it’s at the bottom of JJ’s review here.

ParticipantI’ve finished my Hanoverian infantry (for now, anyway – there will be more next year), along with some Hessians and Schaumburg-Lippe troops. It’s going to be wall-to-wall 10mm ACW and scenery from now until Warfare in November:

No, I answered the soft plastic question as it had been brought up in discussion.

ParticipantLikewise, I’ve never, ever cleaned a kit apart from a ‘stonecast’ model building that was caked in casting-powder. I use enamels for everything, though I have used acrylics in the past. A friend who occasionally gave me figures to paint would (annoyingly) undercoat them in acrylic and it was horribly flaky – I always use heavily-thinned black enamel and never have a problem.
Re painting soft plastic figures enamels v acrylics: Back in the distant past, when I painted Airfix and Esci figures, I used my usual enamels and had the same issues as Tony. However, I once used acrylics to paint some horses and the flaking was FAR worse – it immediately flaked off as soon as it dried. A polymer scientist mate once explained to me that all soft plastics will exude tiny amounts of oil throughout their life, so will always repel paint to some degree.
I’m reminded of the time Evan Allen, the chief sculptor at Flames of War, went on various forums to tell people that there was no need to ‘wash off the mould release agent’ as recommended by so many, because Flames of War didn’t use a mould release agent and he didn’t know of any modern manufacturers who did! Nobody believed him and in the end he gave up telling people…

ParticipantCheers chaps! 🙂
You’ll note from Truls’ superb time-on-target posting that I bollocksed up the order of the grenadier companies in the line! I just lined them up with the most senior on the right and the junior on the left and completely forgot that the British didn’t do it that way. They alternated the companies by flank, so yes, the most senior was on the right (so far so good), but the second most senior would be on the left and they would then alternate on each side, with the most junior in the middle. I only remembered when I was lining the battalions up for the photo… 🙁

ParticipantI’m now starting to understand why you don’t see many SYW British armies around… These buggers take more than twice as long to paint as the French!
The figures are Eureka 18mm and the flags are by Maverick Models.
