    Rod,

Thanks for looking and posting comments.  It was a lot of fun, an I had another today which I’ll post when I can.  Regarding the loss of initiative, you’re absolutely right about not wanting run the Panhards up against T-72s, but what I wanted to do was push up the infantry AT teams to engage on my terms, rather than having the bad guys come charging all over me!

“Why are the FFL using War-Pact equipment and not French VAB’s or French trucks?”
I’m not following you, what do you mean?  In this fight the French had Panhards and AMX-10Ps.  Are you referring to the last paragraph about the future campaign in the Baltic States?  What I’m talking about there is a setting for my giant 6mm war, between pro-Western elements and pro-Soviet elements (“Sirellists”) in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.  This will occur after the French in this campaign conclude their mission to quell Colonel Sirel’s rebellion.

The idea is that this French campaign will conclude in one of two ways: the French kill Colonel Sirel and leave Estonia proudly, or the French try to kill Colonel Sirel and fail miserably, with heavy casualties, and depart Estonia with their tails between their legs.  For my purposes, the Baltic States band together as a means to keep Russia from intervening, but then the pro-Western/pro-Soviet split intensifies (dead Sirel  is a martyr, live Sirel is lionized) and ‘civil war’ breaks out.  I get a decent-sized land mass to fight over, Russia is not directly involved, the forces are qualitatively similar, I can field NATO and WarPac equipment on both sides (as former Soviet Republics/satellites they had WarPac equipment, and NATO pushed in equipment in an attempt to gain influence; military leadership was roughly equal in loyalty to either faction, and so when leaders made their choice they took their units and equipment with them), and I can draw up OOBs and doctrine however I want!

***I NEED YOUR HELP!  Sorry I wrote a damn novel, so I hope you make it this far.  My Google-Fu is weak, and I’m not able to find French military citations for valor.  Do you have something, in order of precedence?  All I’ve found is a really weak Wikipedia page that doesn’t answer the mail in terms of precedence (it confuses things by stating there are military medals and civilian medals, and then there are military AND civilian medals, they’ve mixed in discontinued medals with no real way of telling what is current, there seem to be some missing (I know I’ve heard of the French Croix de Guerre, but I don’t see it listed), and (perhaps most importantly) they don’t explain the criteria or similar US medals (i.e., this is given for heroic action in combat, this is given for heroic action going above and beyond…, or this is equivalent to a US Distinguished Service cross, etc…).

Kyote – I’m glad to hear things are going well, now hurry up and get in the fight!

    John,

Thanks for weighing in, I appreciate it!

“I was going to suggest permitting companies to activate as many times as the owing player likes in a turn, but imposing stress points only on those platoons that take actions.”  I’m just worried that that will simply make it a “activation by platoon game,” vice an “activation by company game.”  Nothing wrong with that, it’s just that I’m focusing on company activation as I want to have several battalions per side.

Regarding cross attachment/company activation, I think you’ve got a great point of view, and with that I’ve decided to be more ‘flexible,’ i.e., not require three platoons per company, certainly not if it doesn’t make sense, but also as a means to simulate better or worse quality battalions.  I’m thinking, a better unit might have two platoons, while worse units might have four platoons (the first making it more likely the two platoons will get more done per turn, and four platoons less).  Does that make sense?

I also want to keep companies to one activation per turn for ‘personal’ reasons as well.  Obviously it makes the game and data tracking more simple, but it’s also a ‘frame of mind’ issue for me.  With that much stuff on the table, I like the feeling of moving the ball forward, i.e., “there, I just finished another turn.”  With multiple activations, sure you end up with fewer overall turns, but that first turn might take 2 hours!  Like I said, it’s certainly ‘6 of 1, half a dozen the other,’ but I like the feeling of accomplishment 😉

I’m pretty sure I’ve got supporting arms figured out (with regards to activation), but I’m still not set on how to handle recon.  Nothing seems to make sense.  The best I’ve come up with is ‘temporary cross-attachment ,’ i.e., activating via the nearest ‘line’ company, with the fact that activation relationship may change during the course of the game.  But then that penalizes the line company in its activation, so maybe give the line company activating a recon platoon a +1 to its roll?  I dunno, that part still needs work…

Regarding the EW issue, I don’t think I need command units represented on the table for that.  I think the same thing can be accomplished simply by targeting specific units (maybe a battalion, or battalion’s worth of companies in a specific geographic area) and giving them a negative modifier to their activation roll.  As you see, I’m not terribly worried about/tied to various militaries’ doctrines; that’s the beauty of Imagi-Nations, I get to do what I want 😉

    Ivan,

I like your idea regarding the tokens.  However:
“…NATO pro’s get 4 per battalion, Warpac first line get 3, NATO conscript 2, Warpac minors 1, USMC 0…”
Someday I’m going to have to come visit you; Oregon, right? 😉

    And you’re killing me:
“…I’d be inclined to give Warpac forces a bonus when following the plan and a penalty when deviating from it…”

There is no NATO and Warsaw Pact, it’s an Imagi-Nation.  If I was sticking with it doctrinally, it would be Warsaw Pact vs Warsaw Pact,  but I’m not sticking with it doctrinally, I’m going to do whatever I want!

    Fellas,

Tim – Thanks for taking a look, the opinions of someone that actually did it are very welcome!  But we’re both victim of me not explaining everything fully; I’m planning on some very large games; everyone keeps saying, “man, you had a lot of stuff on the table for a test game.”  My reply is that, this was a small game!  For the ‘real’ games I intend on having three to five battalions (plus support) on the table, per side!

So you had some really great points, but a lot of it (in my mind at least) had to do with lower-echelon (or scale) granularity.  I’m activating as companies/company teams, with platoons as the ‘stand,’ because I’m going to be playing such large games, so activating at that level is simply a game mechanism to represent the player being a brigade/division commander.  Don’t worry, I’m not gonna quit.  I can’t, I have this dream of massive tank battles!

On a side note, I just looked at your blog, and the hilarious part is that I’d looked at your blog numerous times in the past, but didn’t realize it was YOUR blog.  Truly fantastic!

Shelldrake – Because the games are so big, I don’t want to have higher-level, non-aligned (i.e., not part of one of the maneuver units) leaders, it’s just too much for me to work out in my solo game.  What I am going to do is limit activations to one per company/company team per turn, add overwatch as an action, and allow cross-attachment.  I.e., I had the tank company spread all over the map, and I had the mech company all over the map, but you could pretty much match up a tank platoon with each mech platoon.  So, instead of activating as tank co and mech co, combine a tank plt and mech plt together to form company teams geographically co-located.  This should solve most of my problems (I think).

Guy – Instead of a complicated reaction fire or opportunity fire, I’m going to go with a very simple ‘overwatch’ action to tackle that issue.

Rod – I need to keep it simple, but I think limited companies/company teams to one activation per turn will limit the wild swings in initiative, and the activation via cross attachments (as appropriate) and use of overwatch will straighten out the activation issues (of having to activate one platoon whilst the other two are unengaged).

I wrote up a bunch more (if you’re interested) on the blog:
    http://blackhawkhet.blogspot.com/2014/11/on-road-to-doing-it-right-6mm-modern.html

More games coming this weekend, the Legion in Estonia is already set up for its next fight!

Ahhh, Dr. Phil Robertson, you don’t have the whole picture!

I do, indeed, have enemies for them to fight.  I purchased a total of three four-man good guy teams, a team of 7 Russian-style bad guys, and a team of 9 Islamist-style bad guys.  That should be enough for my purposes.

I just ordered some 20mm terrain the other day.

I agree with Shelldrake agreeing with me 😉

If it weren’t for some anonymous guys on the internet, I probably wouldn’t be here right now.  A few years ago I was bored and looking around on the internet, and I found two blogs; neither was all that pretty to look at, but each had quite a few fights on it, and it was clear the guys were both having a great time, despite the fact they were both playing solo.  One had created his own little world, while the other was playing Spanish Civil War and WWII.  Both were using individually mounted little guys (one 6mm, the other 10mm) with a couple vehicles.

Beautiful is great, but the fact this stuff wasn’t 28mm museum-quality miniatures was actually what inspired me!  I don’t have the time, talent, or patience to make museum-quality stuff, but these guys were just like me, with a couple pieces of felt thrown down over a blanket, and they were getting it on in their own little worlds, and sharing it with us!  I thought (and still think) that was just the coolest thing I’d seen, and they were the impetus for me to get back to gaming after my old man passed away.

So those guys inspired me not only to play games, but to share with other folks, hopefully kinda showing the way for guys teetering on the brink of “it looks cool, but I don’t think I have the time/money/wherewithal to pull it off.”  My reply is that it doesn’t take much; $100 gets you two armies in 10mm, plus trees, walls, roads, and buildings.  Find you a digital camera (or a scanner, I suppose), start a free blog, and you’ll be doing it like the pros in no time 😉

Thanks for looking fellas.  It was indeed a good start!

I mentioned to Ivan that the Mk19 gunner, Cpl Desjardins, is basically being decorated not for being heroic, just for being uber-efficient, whereas Cpl Methot was the ‘hero,’ driving his vehicle up the road to shelter the two WIA in the street, then loading them up in the vehicle.

The activation system’s stress, combined with my use of playing cards to determine which side activates a leader, is working like a champ for my solo action.  I intend on getting a couple more FFL fights in this weekend, wish me luck!

Pendraken Aussies from their Vietnam range would look great Rhodesia!

I’m telling you, 10mm is the way to go.  Go on, you know you want to.  And it’s so cheap; I bought 25 20mm troops for about $45 (the above troops were part of that).  Forty five bucks will get you TWO company-sized units with support weapons and a couple vehicles for each side (assuming a four-man base is a squad)!!!  Not too shabby, eh?  And that’s why when you check my blog you see more ‘armies’ than I’ll ever have a chance to get on the table…

Guy – 10mm is still my thing, and works for whatever you want to do.  I don’t know why I went and bought these, just a total lack of willpower 😉  In any case, I’ll be playing platoon-level stuff in 10mm, battalion level (and above) stuff in 6mm, and small skirmishes (4 good guys, 7-9 bad guys) in 20mm now.  I just need to get my modern Imagi-nation sorted out so I can get to it.

Good stuff, guys, thanks for all the ideas.  Sounds like I need to buy a 10mm cruise ship 😉

For some reason I really want to start off in the Baltics, like the Soviet Union is breaking up and Estonia wants to break away, but internal hard liners want to keep the country Russia-aligned.  Estonia’s interim government, headed by the cousin of the French President, asks France for help to crush the hardliners before the Russians are able to devote too much attention to keeping Estonia under its sphere of influence.  So the Legion is sent in.  Then I plan on a Northern Africa; as mentioned, maybe Chad, Libya, or Mauritania.  From there, the world is my oyster 😉

For those familiar with my previous FFL campaign, we were following the exploits of Major LaPieux, and his superiors, Colonel Louis-Louis and General Pouspous circa 2013, in the fictional former French colony of Perplakistan.  My intent here is to again follow LaPieux and Louis-Louis as they ‘grow up,’ with Louis-Louis as the task force commander and LaPieux one of his subordinates.

For my FFL campaign I’m going to put more guys on the table (both sides), a bigger (3′ x 2′) board, and 6″ reserve/out of contact movement.  I also plan on my good guys being qualitatively better (pro vs trained/irreg), and usually with the good guys having more troops.  I know it sounds backwards, but I like to win 😉

Actually, the point is not winning, the point is that I think this is generally a better concept of modern warfare for Western forces in most encounters: the Western forces are not in danger of being eliminated; ‘winning’ is based on accomplishing the mission objective(s) efficiently and with negligible casualties, otherwise the Western commander has ‘lost.’  I think this works well as a game at this level as you have to actually fight, not just sit tight (or fall back) and call in supporting fires.  Though I reserve the right to fall back and call in supporting fires if I’m really getting my butt kicked 😉

BTW, I love the foamy mat terrain tiles, they look great.  I don’t have the patience to make beautiful stuff like that (unfortunately), plus they’re pretty expensive here ($25 for a pack of them).

Yeah, you’d think the bad guys wouldn’t have lost with activation rolls like that.  Part of it, I’m sure, was the fact the US started off with some very effective fire, so a lot of the enemy activation rolls were used up recovering from that (unpinning and moving back into the firing line).

For fall backs off of failed morale, I’ve been thinking about the idea of making them fall back behind a terrain feature (into cover/out of LOS) rather than distance tied to the die roll.  Maybe if the distance is greater than ‘x’ inches (say, 8″), the fall-back unit surrenders?  What do you guys think about that?

    Eli,

Fantastic, I’m glad you’re back!  I saw your post today regarding 15mm stuff, can’t wait to see it hit the table.  You’ve got a really cool concept, and while right now I’m working on a different type (modern French Foreign Legion extinguishing fires worldwide), I do intend on getting around to an Alcovia-type scenario to pit my loads of microarmor against itself in a dramatic civil war.

Hang in there; I can certainly identify with:
    1) Real Life getting in the way
    2) Being a wargaming butterfly, AKA, having too many different projects going on
    3) Spending quite a bit of time recording everything for prosperity via the blog, and wanting the world to show at least a bit of interest.

Sadly I can only help with that last part, but I assure you I’ve found it interesting, entertaining, and inspirational.  You’re batrep with the SOF guys sneaking around on the mountain trying to dodge the bad guys is mostly to blame for my recent purchase of some Elhiem 20mm modern figures!

I continued to Google, because it looks thicker than a Javelin, and the hand placement is different than the Javelin (sorry, I need to get you guys some better pics of the figure), and I think it’s this:

    the Eryx:

Although it’s still not perfect; the figure has a much larger targeting sensor/optic than any of the pics I’ve found (it doesn’t match the Javelin, either).

Okay, I took a good sit down and read; in a word, fantastic!  Great terrain, minnies, write-up, and fight.  This is definitely the kind of fight I want to have.  Regarding Fist Full of TOWs, how does command and control work (IGOUGO like Flames of War, Card Based like I Ain’t Been Shot Mum, Die-Roll Based like Cold War/Blitzkrieg Commander, etc…)?  Regarding movement, you mentioned ‘…moving up to ‘X’ inches per turn.’  Do you mean that’s the max movement per turn, or that there is variable movement?  Sorry to bother you about it, but I am interested.

I didn’t play a game this morning, just putted around a bit with my own 6mm.  Partly this is because I really wanted to get back to 10mm No End In Sight, but I haven’t done my homework to get my campaign framework ready (I can only play so many ‘one-off’ battles, I need a backstory), and partly because I didn’t feel that comfortable with the 6mm rules I’m using, which are basically Cold War/Blitzkrieg Commander’s Command and Control mechanics with World at War’s combat and movement.

I look forward to any help you can provide on the above questions, and look forward to your next 6mm installment.

    Rod,

I’m not sure how much help I can be.   I don’t really have any sources, I can only speak to what I know/saw  when I was in (I was USMC in Iraq in 2004).  On the off chance it helps, I’ll tell you what I know.

‘Regular’ infantry battalions all had HMMWVs; I can’t tell you how many exactly, but it was enough to conduct mounted patrolling operations in support of our counterinsurgency/stabilization operations, but not enough to move the whole battalion without using 7-tons.  The HMMWVs all had makeshift armor (except for the Weapons Company anti-armor team vehicles, which were hardbacks).  There was a track battalion (AAVs, not LVTPs), but the only time I saw them was towards the end of April in Fallujah, when we got four of them (three of them were subsequently knocked out).  ‘Regular’ infantry battalions wouldn’t have LAVs; there is a separate battalion called ‘LAR’ (Light Armored Reconnaissance) that has them, and they have their own grunts/scouts.

With regards to USMC using AAVs in OIF I, that was only a couple battalions, the Corps just doesn’t have that many tracks.  The rest were in unarmored HMMWVs and 5-tons (later replaced by 7-tons).  I don’t really know anything about MRAPs, that all happened after I got out.  I know the Army battalion we took over from was 82nd Airborne, and they were driving makeshift-armored HMMWVs like we had.  I was around Army Mech battalions a couple times and they were in Bradleys.

    Hope that helps.

    Doc – Thanks.

Spurious – First off, fantastic blog (though I couldn’t find the deal to let me join/follow)!  Regarding 6mm, consider me crept up on.  It grew out of a perfect storm of wanting to go ‘bigger’ (I’ve played so many games where ‘I’ was a Sergeant, a Lieutenant, or a Captain, I want to be a Colonel, or a General!) combined with access to large amounts of goodies for relatively cheap (TMP Marketplace).  I spent a lot of time on your blog last night, as well as Eli Arndt’s (‘Crisis in Alcovia’); you guys had me looking last night at 20mm Moderns (a lot of Elhiem stuff).  Can I really stand anymore???

So, 6mm for Company and above, 10mm for Platoon plus, and 20mm for SOF skirmish?  Kill me…  But I keep finding myself on the Syr Hobbs and Elhiem websites…  ~$12 gets 2 packs, do that for a few/six months and you’ve got some good skirmish forces.  But I’ll need a vehicle or two.  And a crashed helo…

Rod – You need to pack your stuff up and come down to Texas for a long weekend, I’ve got an 8′ x 6′ table ready to go 😉  Have you got a blog?  I’d love to see what you’ve got, and what you get into regarding modern skirmish.

    Jack

    Eli,

Awesome!!!  You Sir, need to get back to work, this is amazing.  I spent several hours last night ‘catching up’ on the story, and need more.  I joined your blog.

Kyote – Three car garage?  What’d you do, knock off a bank?

Patrice – Do you mean GDR (or other Baltic States) fighting against the Russians?  I’ve been a bit wary of that, as I don’t believe my little country will survive the Russian onslaught 😉

Shelldrake – I’m digging it!  I like the 1986 idea: Afghanistan going terribly, Chernobyl freaking folks out, economy cracking, Glasnost/Perestroika, maybe Gorbachev falls ill, encouraging a power struggle.  To Kyote’s point, maybe this emboldens the Chinese to act on some limited territorial disputes.

Now I’m thinking about the Baltic states breaking away instead of Germany, maybe Poland too?  I dunno.

Luddite – I’d thought about doing a Lebanon deal, or maybe South Africa, but all I have are pine trees for 6mm!

Thanks guys.  Nothing is settled, so new ideas are still welcome.

Guys, thanks for the quick responses!

Shelldrake – Thanks.  I apologize as I didn’t mention it, but I’m looking at this scenario fodder as I don’t want to play a ‘conventional’ Cold War Gone Hot-type scenario.  Though Red Storm Rising is a favorite of mine 😉

Kyote – Thanks, but I don’t want to steal an idea/setting someone has already put into play for a campaign.  I’ll take a look at Eli’s blog and see if there are any ideas I can ‘borrow.’  Maybe a bordering country?

Tempest – Twilight 2000, now that’s interesting.  I need to look into that, though the only turn-off about it is that I’m not really looking for a post-Apocalyptic world.  I’d like all the other countries to be normally functioning so they can provide replacement equipment to my own war-torn country 😉

Patrice – I think this is the closest so far to the type of thing I’m looking for, but I still have problems I think.  Maybe.

So, East Germany splits from WarPact; I need a reason why USSR doesn’t move in and ‘actively’ bring them back into the fold immediately.  With DDR splitting from WarPact, NATO immediately hops in with equipment and money, but after a year or so we have leadership and the population splitting into two very distinct elements: pro-democracy, and pro-socialist.  Open conflict breaks out.

I think I still need a reason USSR doesn’t crush it immediately.  I think later you can argue NATO offers the former DDR protection as a burgeoning democracy, and so both NATO and WarPact counterbalance each other, staying out of the fighting for fear of turning it into WWIII.

Interesting, and I appreciate everyone’s concepts, and still open to more ideas.

Yeah fellas, I’m here.  And I’m here because I only want to talk about wargaming and wargames.

Ivan, I sent you a PM on a different site, but I think I’ll post it here and see what comes back.

    Guy Farrish,

You questioned the ability to do NI in 10mm, and I just wanted to let you know I believe it can be done with Pendraken’s Falklands Islands range.  Bear with me, this is my first post here, but I’ll try to post some pics of my guys, as well as links to my blog where you can find more pics of the Pendrakens painted up.

For the Brits, please use the Brits 😉  For the Irish, I’d recommend using the Brit and Argentinian special forces.  I hope this helps.

    Singly based on pennies.

Irregulars, using Pendraken Falklands Brit and Argentinian SF.

Close up. Forgive me, I took these photos before I started using a wash on my figures.

Here’s the link to a couple more photos of my Irregulars:

There’s also about 80 or so battle reports using singly based 10mm troops, just to prove it can be done 😉

    V/R,
    Jack
